Publisher's description of Second Copy 7.16
From Centered Systems:Second Copy automatically copies files and folders from one location to another on the local drives, across the network, or to removable drives such as USB, CD-RW/DVD, or on network storage devices. It works in the background. Simply tell Second Copy, which files to copy, where and when to copy them, and forget about it. Its easy-to-use setup wizard helps to define "profiles" that describe the source and the destination location, and the frequency at which to copy the files. It monitors the source files and automatically copies the new or changed files to the destination. It can compress and encrypt the files using the built-in compression utility. Automatic scheduling includes specific days of the week, hours of the day, or any desired time intervals. New features include 256-bit AES encryption, FTP support, e-mail notification, and support to run as a service, PKZip compatible compression, two-way file synchronization, and the ability to archive up to 25 old versions of files.
Version 7.0.0.163 added: hidden option EmailFrom for SMTP emails; hidden option LogFileType=html. Fixed: when saving the log an extra "." was added to the file extension; sort order indicator arrow on profiles list was reversed (up vs down); dial-up connection to VPN didn't wait long enough after connecting.

Version: Second Copy 7.16
"It can save a part of your life."
Pros: I'm an old user of this tool and it has being improving over time even if old versions were good enough. They invest waht you pay in improvements; as it should be.
I use it to FTP my most important files to a remote server. I have several profiles that allow me to FTP different files at different times automatically.
The software is good, stable, easy to use, unexpensive if you think about what information loss can cost you.
Cons: Don't know yet.

"Unable to recommend this Software"
Pros: Seemed to work well in general use and as long as the user never had to restore the operating system - nice looking interface.
Cons: The software failed in many areas - To name:
On most open files, is was unable to backup. Most newer backup programs can backup open files.
You have to have Admin rights to your machine to use the program. Hmmm not good!!
The developer writes all the user profiles to your registry - this is very bad. For example: let's suppose your system crashed and you then install a new OS - big problem here with the software. Since all your user profiles were written to the old machines's registry, you will have to manually enter all the profiles again - very poor. User profiles should be stored locally in an .ini file so the user can backup this file then quickly restore all the user profiles in the event of a system crash. Writing directly to the registry frequently is just poor programming style.
Not only is writing to the registry bad, but it's done sloppy. For example: I changed one of my profiles to backup a sub folder instead, however the old and new entry are in the registry - old one should have been removed.
Here we have a backup program that can't even restore it's own settings. I'm quite surprised CNET gave it a high rating.
Why not write locally the user profiles and also to the registry. Have the App first check locally and if the file got accidently deleted then go to the registry to load the profiles in the GUI?
Definately not a keeper on my system!!!

Version: Second Copy 7.16
"Indispensible. An all-time BEST backup utility."
Pros: SecondCopy is an amazingly long-lived, well-supported, indispensible program that's
also well-designed, easy to use, and easy to learn. Second Copy has saved many clients from very messy disasters.
In small companies who can't afford high-speed backup or full workgroup file stores, I simply pair each employee with his/her neighbor, and have SecondCopy clone their work-files onto each other's computers.
For really critical development projects, I have SecondCopy keep 10 versions of my work files at 10-minute intervals, so I can "go back" up to an hour and a half. SecondCopy is also keeping 10 versions at one-hour intervals, and 10 versions at one-day intervals. All these backups are done with virtually no impact on performance.
These days, there's almost no way to protect giant hard disks other than using more big drives as backup devices. With SecondCopy, it's easy to create intelligent clones of your work files, without wasting whole drives in mirroring. Also, mirror backups don't provide multiple versions, and some disk corruption will be mirrored to the backup, ruining both disks.
This is one of those very rare apps which has been faithfully tweaked and supported by the same people for many years. It should be a key component in any reasonable backup strategy. In fact, it's often the best FIRST component in a well designed backup plan.
Cons: Some of the advanced options for creating "second copies" of your folders are risky. There is AMPLE warning within the program, if you choose these options, but it's possible for new users to get confused. I'm not sure how to provide these capabilities without also giving the user power to make mistakes, but the fact that these options are conceptually advanced (and intrinsically complex) makes me wish that the authors could invent a better solution than just big, clear contextual warnings. (Of course, this isn't really a con -- it's a side-effect of providing flexibility that some users couldn't do without.)

Version: Second Copy 7.16
Pros: I have been using Second Copy for several years. The program is simple to use but very powerful in what it can do. Every once in a while if I get stumped in trying to do something in Second Copy, I'll email tech support and within hours I get a response! I have never seen such great service from any other software company. I highly recommend this program.

"Right tool for the right job!"
Pros: Second Copy is the perfect tool for all your backup jobs. I use it to synchronize my desktop and laptop computers. I also use it to keep my websites updated. When I am on travel, I use Second Copy to backup the data to my external USB drive. Their customer support is top notch too!
Cons: Does not copy open files.
