The good: Incredibly thin and intuitive design; beautiful LCD; supports photo and video playback; seamless integration with iTunes, which boasts the world's biggest music catalog and a new video store; smooth video; lots of extra features, such as a world clock, a stopwatch, and PIM applications; a galaxy of accessories designed for the iPod; great overall value.
The bad: No extras included, such as a dock, A/V cables, or a power adapter; poor battery life for video; slight delay when playing video; no guarantee that your non-iTunes Music Store video will play on an iPod, even after using converted third-party software.
The bottom line: Get the affordable, sleek, and sexy 5G Apple iPod for its audio virtues. Although video looks great, poor video battery life and a relatively small screen hamper its appeal to video heads.
Those who follow gadgets know that Apple didn't invent portable digital video; companies such as Archos, Creative, and iRiver have produced good if not stellar products that play back video--and on larger screens with better battery life. But if Apple can do for video what it has done for audio--that is, deliver a hardware/software ecosystem that offers a decent choice of content and makes it easy to get video on to the iPod--then this device, like it or not, will be remembered as the one that started the portable digital video revolution.
The 5G iPod, which is available in white or Nano black and comes in 30GB and 60GB capacities for $299 and $399, respectively, is the best one we've used to date. Yet because it has added a major extra feature--video playback--to its solid, audiocentric foundation, there's room for improvement.

What is an iPod? An iPod is a portable storage device. This 5G iPod can store music (its main function), podcasts, audiobooks, video, and general computer files. It has a rechargeable battery built in.
What is the difference between an iPod and an ?MP3 player?? MP3 player is a generic term and refers to a range of portable music players that use digital music files. iPod is a specific ?MP3? player from Apple. It plays AAC files (Apple?s proprietary music files), the old generic mp3 files, and a few other files. Please do a little research on the different file types before you buy an MP3 player, otherwise you may get stuck with something that doesn?t play the files you already have or bought online. Cnet.com has an MP3 buying guide that is the ideal starting place if you need to know more.
Then what is the advantage, I already have a CD player? Because the 5G iPod can, essentially, hold your entire collection of music in the palm of your hand.
How/what do you connect to an iPod? You can connect headphones directly. You can also plug into to the bottom 30-pin docking hole by which you can connect to a wide variety of accessories (stand-alone speakers, car-adapter devices, etc.) or connect to your home PC. You can also connect iPod to a television (when you purchase those cables). The iPod accessories are what really make the iPod such a great device (and also what really makes money for Apple).
How does it all work? The iPod is really part of a 3-part system: iTunes software (which exhists on your PC), the iPod itself, and the accessories. iTunes software is downloadable for free from apple.com and is necessary to operate your iPod (you can go download it right now to get a taste of what using an iPod might be like). iTunes is the central hub which gathers all your music, podcasts, audiobooks, and video and then places them onto your computer?s hardrive and organizes them for you. It?s all kept in one ?Library?, which can be searched/sorted numerous ways. How does iTunes get music into your library? 1) Place a CD that you already own into your CD-Rom drive on your PC, open iTunes, and ?import? the music to your library. 2) Download music from the music store (which is built into iTunes) to add those songs to your library. 3) iTunes can search your hardrive for various music that you?ve already downloaded in the past, and copies them into your iTunes Library. Once you?ve gathered you music, video, etc. then connect your iPod to your PC via a USB connection, and then iTunes will transfer these files to your iPod. The iPod device itself is mostly read-only, meaning that you cannot really change/add/delete stuff unless you connect it to iTunes. iTunes controls the content of the iPod, whereas the iPod by itself is just a player. Now that you?ve got your stuff onto the iPod, just plug your iPod into the various accessories or headphones to play your stuff.
Why iPod? Why not use another MP3 player? Because iTunes is such a great piece of software. It?s all centralized into iTunes. Importing, buying online music/videos, burning your own CDs, putting stuff into your iPod ? it?s all in one place. iTunes is very intuitive, versatile, powerful, yet easy to use. The iTunes music store has the largest selection of online music and allows you to preview songs before buying.
What all comes in the 5G package when I buy it? You get the 5G iPod with 30GB or 60GB hardrive, earbuds, USB connection cord (to connect your iPod to your PC), and the iTunes software CD. This USB connection cord is shaped like a USB connection at one end and the 30-pin docking connection at the other end, and this will recharge the 5G iPod when connected to a PC. The package does NOT come with a docking station. It does NOT come with an AC adapter for your car or home outlet use. It does NOT come with external speakers.
What things should I be aware of before I buy this?
- You really need a high-speed internet connection if you want to buy music online. Also, downloading iTunes by itself will take forever if you have dialup.
- Make sure you have high-powered USB connections on your computer. These are ones that came with the computer when you bought them from the manufacturer. Many of the add-on USB connectors (like ones you install to a PCI slot) won?t work.
- USB 2.0 is preferred and provides much speedier response when you connect the 5G to your PC. If you have USB 1 connections (like I do), it will take a few minutes for your PC and iTunes to respond when you connect the 5G. It appears as if the computer is locking up, but just wait a few minutes.
- Although music is very easy to manage with iPod, getting video onto the 5G iPod is rather tricky. You can download videos and TV shows sold through the iTune?s music store and those play just fine. The trick is trying to get you own DVDs onto the iPod. It can be done. However, it usually involves a multi-step process with two or more different programs that you have to find or buy (and no, Quicktime Pro will not do this). It?s beyond my understanding. Check the apple.com message boards for help about this. I just don?t want you to get the impression that you?ll be able to put you favorite Family Guy episodes on your iPod with ease ? it?s really tricky and almost doesn?t seem worth it.
- Tech Gear?s USB 2.0 port PCI card and ADS Tech?s Dual-Link PCI card (which has USB 2.0 and Fire-Wire) will NOT work with the 5G. When attached to Tech Gear?s card, the iPod will not be recognized by iTunes. When attached to the ADS Tech?s card, the computer reboots in a never-ending cycle. ADS Tech completely ignored my emails to their tech support.
- Battery Life quotes from Apple are always overestimated and based on controlled situations. The 60 GB hardrive 5G iPod is rated at a 20 hour battery life. However, this is only if your music is stored at 128 killibits per second and you don?t change to a different playlist or activate the backlight, nor use the sound equalizers, and listen through headphones at a low volume. Realistically, you?re gonna get 8 ? 14 hours of music playback from a full battery charge. Video playback is only like 2 ? 3 hours.
- The small pin connection on the top of the older iPods (it was right next to the headphone jack) is now gone for the 5G. Be cautious when buying certain accessories that may use this older connection. Some of the FM transmitters and voice recorders use this and won?t work on the 5G.
- Songs downloaded from iTunes are protected and will only play on devices that you authorize (using your iTunes account name and password).
Things you may need to also buy (don?t just budget for the iPod, because realistically you?ll also need some other accesories):
- Protective carrying case. The 5G has moving parts. The back of the 5G is slippery. Not a good combination. Consider getting a semi-hard carrying case to protect your investment.
- Car accessories. To listen to your iPod?s music in your car you?ll need one of 3 things: an FM transmitter (the most simple and popular method), a cassette adapter, or a direct line (the most expensive and tricky, yet best sounding). Some of these devices also recharge the iPod.
- Docking bay with speakers. This allows you to place the iPod on the device and then listen to music though its speakers. Many of these also recharge your iPod. Almost an essential for any iPod user.Updated
Just FYI, in case you are wondering what the term "5G" means. This model is the 5th generation iPod created by apple. Hence, the term 5G. Summary: First, this screen is a great size. Yeah some players have 4" screens but they're not very portable. iPods are meant to go everywhere with you and this one truly does. In fact, it is thinner than the old 20 GB and lighter too. The video use is great for this. I am converting all of my shows I have on dvd and many of my movies to my iPod so I have a good selection on the go. With the 60 GB I can imagine having 60 movies and still having room for a lot of music. It is free and easy to convert dvd's, just use a dvd decryptor and ipod video convertor (both free). The screen looks much sharper than any previous iPod. The one thing I don't like is for the 60 GB, you only get about 3 hours of video playback (not horrible). So on 8 hour plane rides you might not want to use video the whole time, but on the most part 3 hours should be enough. Well stop reading and get out and buy one!

Not worth the hassle

The battery life is horrible and since it only comes with a USB cord for recharging, you'd better have a computer nearby for a slow recharge. The extra functions, those beyond music and video, are worthless...who needs a clock that gives you time in various cities around the world? A traveler? Well, you won't be able to travel far AND watch video...the battery will die. NO F.M. radio (so you can't record radio--a pretty neat feature of other mp3 players), no voice recording.
The biggest trouble was iTunes and the fact that the iPod is not compatible with other software. This is due to Apple's attempt to make the iPod exclusive-use of their software and music download site. IE: a GREAT program for tagging and organizing music files is MusicMatch. It can catalog large amounts of music MUCH faster and easier than iTunes. But Apple made sure that the iPod doesn't work with the software because of some stupid fight between the two. Perhaps Apple should let potential buyers know that you are going to be pidgeon-holed into using the subpar iTunes. And so the iPod is also not very compatible with other media formats either. You have to convert your video format into QuickTime in order to load it and it also doesn't accept WMA...again, another conversion. Another frustration: it came with a pre-set list of folders, one of which is titled "Audio Books". Too bad it doesn't show up on the iTunes software. So there is no way to get audio books into that folder. If you want to click and drag an audio book into that folder, guess what?...another conversion because it will only accept two 'spoken word' formats.
Design?: we know Apple, your no-moving-parts, just-a-click-wheel design is clean and stylish. Now get over yourself and for the love of God, add a seperate volume control! A couple extra buttons isn't going to ruin the image (isn't it a little spartan as it is anyhow?). Click wheel for everything?...It is just plain annoying.
If you are going to start a NEW music collection and intend to do it EXCLUSIVELY through Apple and iTunes, go ahead and get this i(only)Pod. But if you have existing music and want a flexible mp3 player that will accept whatever you can throw at it...keep looking. I'm waiting for the Creative Zen Vision:M. A 30 gig player that will be LOADED with extras including a better video screen. It will also come with some of the things that Apple makes you pay an exorbinant amount of money for after paying upper $300 for the iPod. It is also going to have a battery life that will make the iPod look tired. The only bummer, it is only 30 gig. Oh well. In 5 years, iPod will not have anything more than 30 or 40% market share due to inflexibility.
Oh, and by the way, I had a 4th generation iPod before and returned it for the same reasons. Well, not all the same, now there is video frustrations to add to the iPod's shortcomings. So this Christmas present is heading back to the store.9 out of 18 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I didn't have any player until I got a 3G iPod 10G. I spent an inordinate amount of time ripping my huge CD collection onto my laptop but once it was complete I haven't been without my iPod since.
I picked up the 60G video iPod in November 2005 and I love it even more than I figured I would. Battery life (for me) exceeds the specs, and I watch a lot of video. Now that iTunes has almost all of the major networks on board and a huge content advantage I wouldn't buy anything else, but then again I'm not interested in watching home videos or ripping things off my TiVo. I probably spend about $30 a month on downloading TV shows. To me, the convenience is worth every penny.
The hardcore techies like other products (read the reviews), because they want everything in one product and they have the techinical ability to spend the time and effort to translate data between different formats. They don't like the iPod because it won't let you do that easily (or at all in some cases).
But the iPod is simple. Anyone can take it out of the box, plug it in, download music and TV shows and watch/listen on a high quality player. That is what it is. On that basis, it executes perfectly.
If you want it to make toast while having it show you home videos while listening to the radio then buy something else and hire a techno-geek to come to your house everytime something doesn't work right.
When you buy one of these players, you have to think about what you want it for. If radio/home movies are important to you, buy a different product. If you can't see paying $1.99 for a TV show that you will probably only watch once and want to spend the time transferring video from your TV show, buy a different product.
But to me, the price of the TV show is cheaper than a coffee at Starbucks and more entertaining.
What Apple does (and other than the iPod I'm an Apple Hater) with the iPod is get it right. They don't come out with every feature they can and hope they all work. They may not be first, but they will do it right.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Personally I thought the box it came in was a let down. It looked like I was paying 450 euro for a double cd case not an iPod.
I would like to get a proper case with it and even if you want one most local sellers only sell iSkins which I think defeat the purpose of the iPod look.
The Podcast system in the iPod is brilliant. The automatic downloading of both audio and video podcasts and the seemless uploading to the iPod is unbelievable.
In conclusion, while the iPod is lacking in certain areas it still is the best Music player available today. If you were considering getting the iPod I would suggest you invest in the 60gb bacause 30gb can fill up pretty quickly with video and video podcasts.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: For a high priced player like the new iPod video player one would expect it to come with a couple of good accessories. But what you'll get instead is a cheap looking pouch (stitched at three ends) and very few accessories in the market.
However, apart from the iPod, here are a few things which I feel are a must buy for any video enthusiast.
1. Scratch proof cover from www.TheInvisibleShield.com $25:- This site was referred to me by an Apple Store assistant. This site sells a plastic film which protects your iPod from scratches. Being transparent it is virtually un-noticeable and yet protects your ipod from those inevitable scratches. Comes with a lifetime guarantee. I strongly suggest purchasing this instead of the cases available in stores.
2. Portable speakers from Sonic Impact i-Fusion $150. This is one of the cheapest speaker sets available for the video iPod. Most others in the market are above $300. What I liked about this is that it has good sound quality, easy to use buttons, and also has compartments for storing your iPod and in-ear headphones. The outside cover is like a luggage bag and it comes with a zipper. The sound quality is good and it also re-charges your iPod while playing. But if you wish to rock your home and don't mind spending then go for the higher end speaker sets like Bose.
3. Divx Codec. Free:- www.download.com (search for divx codec). This codec is a popular video codec (in layman terms, information which makes the videos small, compact and of good audio+video quality that most players like Windows Media can play). Install this codec and it will be helpful in the next software that I've mentioned below.
4. #1 DVD Ripper from http://www.dvdtox.com $34.95:- Insert a dvd into your pc and using this software you can rip off the songs/chapters onto your PC in AVI/VCD and other formats (I prefer the avi format). This software shows the contents of the DVD in an easy to understand format (chapter wise). You can tweak the output that you want (size of the video, resolution of the video, codec to be used etc). It also has an option to shutdown your computer after the ripping (extracting the contents from the dvd onto your pc) is done. Insert the dvd, make appropriate settings and rest easy. I am not aware of whether this works with copy protected DVDs but it sure does work with my Indian song DVDs.
5. http://www.pqdvd.com :- Video DVD to iPod Converter $34.95. After having amassed a sizable list of songs in AVI format (with Divx as Codec), I had this problem of converting it to Mpeg-4 for being able to upload it onto my iPod. I came across scores of online stories about Apple not supporting Divx codec. This software saved my day. Using it, I could convert my AVI video songs to MPEG-4 quickly and then using i-tunes software (which comes with the iPod) I could upload those videos onto my ipod.
6. Philips Surround Sound White Earbuds - HE592 $17.99. Though the in-ear headphone set that comes along with the ipod is nice, try these headphones. They sound well. But if you want to splurge, go for the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones.

How could it get any better?

I love the screen real estate for browsing in addition to movie viewing. I also love the lyrics feature. Audio quality is definitely better than previous models. Also, this model supports high-quality recording, which should come in handy. Obviously, Apple's ease of use is simply unparalleled. Unless you're looking for something smaller, like the iPod Nano, this model is the best in every way. Don't look any further.

I do, 2 hours of battery life with video playback is terrible. With itunes now going to have desperate house wives etc the ipod video can't be seen as merely meant for music video clips, so there's no excuse for the poor battery life. This player is definitely not for long trips - especially since there's still no removable battery. An FM tuner is still not present. And TV out only through the dock is a downer. However the ultra slim design is impressive and itunes video is sure to make this a hit with the less 'tech savvy'. The 'tech savvy' will be disappointed with the lack of codec support for div x/mpeg2 - meaning countless hours of transcoding. The 2.5 inc screen has nice specs; 320 x 240 res, over 65,000 colors (apple - over something isn't a spec), and video at 30 frames a sec means it edges out the cowon iaudio x5 in the video department.
In summary the ipod is a good player for what it's attempting to be, but in typical ipod fashion lacks in important features. Many other players such as the Cowon iAudio X5 and the Archos Gmini 400 have already done this but over 6 months ago. And with the Cowon A2 and Digital Cube's iStation v43 around the corner, save your money. Although I'm sure you will barely hear a word about them (the ipod video launch was even on the news here in Australia) - if only they had apple's marketing department.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
