Get graphic: monitors for graphics pros

Professional graphic designers and photographers need a lot more than a display with decent image quality and a pretty exterior. After all, a properly calibrated monitor could mean the difference between chartreuse and spring green--and whether you get that next contract. Traditionally, CRTs have been the most dependable choice for graphics pros. Now, a few companies make LCDs that challenge the status quo, but they do so at a hefty premium. These LCDs will satisfy the most-demanding designers and photographers; the monitor you choose will depend on your bottom line.

Review summary Though the NEC MultiSync LCD2180WGLED features new LED backlight technology, we're unconvinced it's worth $6,700. Most professional users will be better served by other, less expensive LCDs. The LaCie 319 has excellent image quality, but its high price and advanced features make it an LCD that only real graphics pros should consider. The Eizo FlexScan L997 is a high-end LCD that delivers excellent performance and all the adjustability a graphics pro could want. This is one of the best LCDs for people who need a monitor with precise color and shading capabilities.
