Living with Windows Vista beta 2

I'm amazed by the conflicting comments elsewhere in the media regarding Windows Vista beta 2. In particular, one MSNBC reporter found that basic drivers were missing after his install, yet Ed Bott over at ZDNet didn't have much trouble at all. Having been around beta software for nearly 10 years, I've seen some bad code in my day, but I've been impressed with the various CTP builds for Windows Vista. Yet we reviewers have only a brief window in time to make a snap judgment about a large and very complex operating system. So for the next seven days, I'm going to be working exclusively under Windows Vista beta 2 and reporting what I experience.

For the record, I have experienced some difficulties, and these events occurred very early in the beta process. Before Microsoft made clear the hardware expectations, I had problems getting the new Aero graphics to work under the September 2005 CTP release, but once I started using high-end Acer laptops, such as an Acer Ferrari 4000, I've had no problems whatsoever. In fact, I just reloaded Windows Vista beta 2 (release 5384.4) on a partition within my Acer TravelMate 8200 and didn't experience a single glitch. Microsoft has available a Get Ready page with specs for merely running the operating system or getting the full 3D graphics effects. Since this code is still in beta, it is recommended that you don't make Vista your sole operating system at this time. To reserve your beta copy, sign up here.

Microsoft changed its installation procedure with Vista. The code arrives as a compressed image that is first copied onto your hard drive, then expanded. I choose a clean install, then used Windows Easy Transfer to copy over my Internet settings and Favorites, but I could also copy over my user accounts, folders, program settings or e-mail settings, contacts, and messages from Windows XP.

Microsoft also says it has separated the Vista code from the various drivers. Upon installation, some basic drivers are installed, but a separate download adds specific drivers for your hardware. Microsoft feels that its enterprise customers will appreciate this, creating fewer images of the OS to roll out across a wide variety of workstations. For the home user, however, it means a faster install. My installation took 45 minutes, start to finish.

Check back tomorrow to read about my first day of living with Windows Vista.

Installation of Vista went smooth and is stable

I have a Dell Desktop PC Pentium 4 3.20 Gh (T860), and installation of Vista went smooth. I only had to install the XP All in One Printer/Scan and Wireless drivers to make it work, and could install all my preferred XP programs, and since all went perfectly well, smoother and easier than with Windows XP.

VISTA installation

Hi

I did an upgrade to my windows xp pro system. P4 3Gig 1.5Gb memory. FX5700 256Mb graphics.

45 mins? No way more like 4.5 HOURS!!! No idea what went wrong there then.

Vista is visually superb... great new security features and everything I had installed worked.... except Outlook 2003...

So I downloaded from Microsft the 2007 Beta and hey presto all was ok again or was it...

When I tried to open my archive pst files Beta 2007 flatly refused to do so.

So... whilst I liked what I saw I can't do without my old e-mails so 20 mins later thanks to Acronis I was back up and running with XP Pro. (Allways have a fall back position)

I hope they sort these sorts of issues out becasue it sure looked pretty :)))

Look forward to any further releases they may issue.

Pretty good info

I put it on an HP desktop. I have an amd 3400 64 bit, gig of ram, 6800GT OC nvidia card and a HP photosmart 7700 series printer.

Only issues ive had is my display driver seems to crash quite a bit. I'll boot up and all i pretty much see is black within the windows. Cant read the folders, icons, etc.

2nd was my printer driver. The one from HP for XP just crashes during the install. To get around this, i just had windows look in my temp directory where the driver unzips itself. So that wasnt too big of a deal.

Beyond that, the look and feel are great.

Computer semi illerterates

I have been working with computers for over ten years....Apple 2 300 baud, Does that take anyone back...?
Anyway, I still have a lot of trouble when XP or some other program deletes a dll or something wrong happens. For those of us that haven't as much time to read up on how to fix our computers, Vista is looking very scary. I won't be getting it until the beta is taken out and they have fixed many of the problems with the drivers, software compatibility and so forth. It is expensive enough to get software and then have to go through headacks trying to figure out where to, how to solve the problems. Why is it too much to ask that Microsoft trial test with professionals (that can do all the things us mainstream computer users do to mess up our computers)to find the problems before they sell it. I understand this is beta, but look at all the fixes that microsoft has had because they didn't adequately look at all the potential problems that devious hackers seem to be able to find and celebrate with another virus, worm etc.

No Chance Of My Buying Vista Until I Know How It -

handles digital music and video. I want to know if music i recorded from my CD's and changed to MP3's will play properly. Is Vista going to play manager of digital rights restrictions and report to the media industry if i have played their content without digital signed permissions? (The article's description of the firewall indicated "outgoing data would not be blocked" ( I bet just so the media industry can be informed of our use of digital media; a trojan by default built into the Operating System). I installed XP Service Pack 2 and i can no longer change Windows Media Player files to MP3's with the same programs i used before upgrading to SP2. It seems microsoft is just offering a few "widgets, gadgets, sparkly things" ,and not anything really compelling, to intice people to change to their more controlling and manipulative software. I don't think Micosoft gives a hoot about improving our computing experience. They seem fo be offering a few "glitzes" and taking more control of our lives; and this rediculous multi-tier offering of services is the old sales tactic of trying to "upsell" customers, who(their marketing dept.is banking on human nature) will want to keep up with the Jones's, to the most expensive package. Certainly, no one is going to want just the stripped down version. It's all about profit and to hell with the customers needs!!!!!

Welcome Information...

I would like to see more information about drives and how Windows Vista will support the hardware in our systems. Also, will Windows Vista make better use of Dual Core CPU's including the AMD variety..
