Living with Windows Vista beta 2: Day 5.

In my job at CNET I need to use a variety of different PCs for different purposes. While I can easily handle the transition from Windows 98 SE to Windows 2000 or XP--this has become second nature--the transition from Windows Vista beta 2 back to Windows XP or earlier has been surprisingly rough. There are some paradigm shifts regarding file structure within the OS that simply don't translate to the earlier versions. That, and there are a few new features within Windows Vista that you won't want to part with once you start using them.

Search
Apple OS X users already know how easy it is to find any app, any file, anywhere on their hard drive, then save those searches in temporary virtual folders. Now Windows Vista users will have those same opportunities. Unfortunately, when I transition back to Windows XP, I feel truly lost.

With Windows XP, I often find myself having to go to Control Panel, then to one subgroup then another subgroup just to find an obscure application, make a change, or get some system information. With Windows Vista, I simply type in what I want in the Start menu. It's easy--and it's addictive.

File structure
To make these Vista blogs visual, I've been collecting screenshots on a USB drive and porting them over to a production machine at work. I could e-mail them, but I also use the USB drive for file storage. On other operating systems, in order to save to the USB drive, I have to select My Computer, then choose the drive I want, and so on. With Vista, I simply click the arrow next to the word Computer in the file path to see what drive options I have available. This may seem like a small thing, but when you're moving dozens of files from machine to machine, every second counts.

I can also group files by author or other metadata. These groupings are virtual in that the files don't physically move on the drive, only in their associations with folders and directories. It's an odd concept but a useful one. For example, I can save a search in a virtual folder, keeping items together temporarily for a specific task. Afterward, I can delete the search folder, yet the individual files remain in their respective physical locations.

Gadgets
One cool feature that fortunately I can replicate on my Windows XP systems is the new Windows Vista Gadgets (or widgets). At first I didn't like gadgets, but now I get it. Opera 9 beta 1 allows me to add widgets to my Windows XP desktop, and I've started doing so after spending these last few days with Vista.

In Vista, gadgets can be dragged anywhere on the desktop, but they also live along the far right-hand side of the desktop in what Microsoft calls the Vista Sidebar (which you can turn off if you really don't like it). I think the sidebar is useful; it's screen real estate that would otherwise go unused. Now, in addition to seeing an analog representation of the current time, I also keep up with the latest headlines from News.com via the discreet little RSS gadget I have positioned there.

I booted up my computer yesterday and to my suprise, the CD drives did not show up. Though the few hours before this, they worked perfectly and now nothing. Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas on how to fix it?

Problems with Multi Boot (Windows Vista and Linux)

I tried to install all my OS into three partitions. First being Windows XP, Suse Linux 10.1, and Windows Vista. Everything went well untill I tried to boot into Windows XP Pro, I was informed that the NTLDR was not available. This was only the start. Suse Linux would not boot either, but Windows Vista did boot. Then I noticed that I have two Boot Managers working. I was reading up on the Vista Boot Loader, and I found that OS's must be installed in order. Example: Windows XP, Suse Linux, then Windows Vista. So, I wipe the drive and spent the day installing in this order. Still no luck. I installed Linux without the GRUD Boot loader, with no success. Windows has replaced the Boot.ini with it's own crazy loader that will not ackownledge anything but other Windows operating system's. The boot.ini file in Windows XP say's that in order to edit it, you use use BCDedit.exe in Vista. OK, but in Vista, they took the almighty Run command. Now I'm hot. So I search for it.........................Found it! I'm presented with a box that says that I have to be administrator. I go into my garage, and pick-up the hammer, the thought does cross my mind but lay it back down and just call Bill Gates every name I can think of. Dirty thoughts about his Wife come to mind. Now I'm happy =) Back to hacking....I run Command with Admin rights and type in BCDedit.exe, success. HUH! I really am confussed now, so I exit because all the commands are confusing. So if anybody knows a trick or hint to installing Windows Vista with Linux, please help!

"Setup failed to open Windows image file" VISTA b2

VISTA Beta 2 [latest-5384] Installation error: Wonder if MS has made any definitive response to this - the folks on the boards (i've seen hundreds in the last 3 days) seem to have tried the obvious - what's the 'non-obvious' answer to this??? btw, CRC and MD5 checksums of the download image compare exactly with actual image file on the MS site [example below]
"Yep, I got the same error too, after entering the 25 digit code. Tried burning a new DVD from the image file, using a different burner and different software (Roxio), and even redownloaded the software and burned it to +R media instead of -R. All burns were at 2x speed for highest quality. Every time get the same message "unable to open the image file" so all I've succeeded in doing so far is wasting several DVDs."

Vista = updates, reboots, craches, confused users

Hey everybody,

As a analist-programmer, day after day, .NET is everything I have to deal with during my dayjob.

VS 2005 is the tool for creating cool app's. But, it craches al least 10 times a day, have to write a lot of work around code due the stupidity of the Windows platform and graphical forms look like hell in runtime.

Now Vista forces people to buy anothing PC again!
So I started wandering. Once I played with about 7 distro's of Linux. All of them could do the task I needed and did it much faster then Windows XP. The best this is, not once did my pc crach using Linux.

But I admit, Linux is not the platform for chill-computer-using. Atleast not yet. (Didn't recognize my WIFI :()

So, Vista? Indexing files, transitions of forms, I did that last year on with Linux on a 1,3 GHz Celeron system! (And that's a crapy CPU)

I made an order on Apple store for a MacBook.
I will be able to run OSX, Windows XP And Linux AT THE SAME TIME!!!

Meaning, Vista?: I'm not ready for 100 security updates, 200 reboots and 300 craches. Instead 2007 will be the year I will enjoy working on a P... no, on a MAC!

Blowhard authors

Paradigm

When I see an author use this obscure and virtually meaningless word, I know instantly that they are a blowhard that doesn't feel good about themselves or what they are writing ... so they toss out "paradigm" to see if they can impress anyone with their clumsy attempt at verbal skills.

They are so busy trying to "puff up" they don't realize how obvious they really are. Oh my God! .. how incredibly clumsy. This is writing to "impress", not writing to be understood or effectively communicate.

Then, knowing that much about the author, I also know there is likely very little of substance in the rest of what they write. They are literally screaming, "Hey, I've got nothing to say but check out my vocabulary!"

So I quit reading.

Should I wait for Vista

Hi,

I'm planning to buy a new laptop within the next 3-6 months and am wondering with the pending release of MS Vista, if I should wait until it is fully released to do so? I ask because it sounds like the transition from MS XP to MS Vista will not necessarily be a simple one and would rather avoid too much of a headache. Also, the new operating system...etc..how does this affect old documents? I'm a student/writer and a lot of my documents are in Word XP originally installed in 2002. I never upgraded, as it wasn't really necessary. Will there be compatibility issues that you know of, as I know that MS has a tendency to stop supporting doc versions after a certain amt. of years, etc... Thanks for any tips you can offer

Is vista unix, or is it still a mix of dos and 2000 (like XP0 or is it something else?

Sneaking DRM into Vista

I've heard thru the grapevine that they are sneaking in Digital Rights Management (DRM) into the Vista OS. I'm all for fair use, but if this is true, I'm one person who will NEVER get Vista. I already use Mandriva Linux on one of my machines and I love it. DRM will push me over the edge for shure.
