Sony delays PlayStation 3 in Europe, cuts numbers for U.S. launch
Posted by: John P. Falcone

Sony has scaled back the planned November global launch of the PlayStation 3. The console's European and Australian launch date has been pushed back to March 2007. The PS3 will still be available in Japan and North America in mid-November 2006, but the number of consoles available at launch in each territory has been cut to 100,000 and 400,000, respectively, with another 1.5 million units said to be available by the end of the year. It's unclear how that latter number will be divided between Japan and the United States, and how many of the PS3s will be the $500 entry-level version or the $600 deluxe version.

At E3 2006, Sony had touted its worldwide launch strategy and plans to sell a total of 4 million units across Japan, North America, Europe, and Australia before the end of 2006. The company--and eager PlayStation fans around the world--will now have to settle for half that. The culprit for the shortfall is manufacturing problems with a key Blu-ray component, which more or less confirms rumors that had picked up in the past few weeks.

The bottom line is that the PS3 is going to be just as hard to obtain this holiday season as the Xbox 360 was last year (assuming, that is, that Sony can still make the November deadline). That's music to the ears of Microsoft and Nintendo, and more bitter medicine to swallow for eager PS3 fan-boys--including those who are just looking for a more affordable Blu-ray player.

Sony the Liar

I feel very sorry for the Europe and Australlian people.
Never trust SONY ever. They lie a lot.
I definetly want 2 or 3 years of warranty for ps3 because we are paying $500-600 worth of system.
Some of the features in PS3 are dumb.

Yo everyone chill...was joke

However, I did put down a deposit on the $600 PS3 through FYE. Their pre-order policy is that you get a kind of number, based on when you pre-ordered it. When the store gets the PS3, it is set aside for you to pick up, up to however many they get.

So if I was number 11 to pre-order and they only get 10 then I'm out of luck and will have to wait till the second shipment. However if they get 12 then mine will be sitting there waiting for me to pick it up.

However, as with many other places, they will likely only hold it for a day or 2 before releasing it to the next person in "line".

I just wanted to see how many people I could get upset with my original comments. Its funny to see how much a stupid device can upset people. People, there are more important things in life than playing video games. Get out a little bit and enjoy life! Meet a girl (or a guy, whatever your preference).

Video games are not the end-all in life :)

Peace!

Huge disappointment for Sony fans.

Sony has been dishonest too many times and I'm not pleased with it. Their betrayal to Nintendo for video gaming, arrogance towards customers, and overestimation of itself, etc. This could be the end to the great PlayStation if they continue their harsh ignorance...The more they lie, the less I will trust them. Highly-inspired PS2 and the PSP is too overrated, PS3 should be better. Despite this serious issue on the PS3, I am sure they will eventually succeed on the long run and history proves it. Microsoft will do its best to beat Sony PlayStation 3 with its Xbox 360 but they won't win. Analysts are overpredicting and overexpecting the capabilities and progress of the upcoming PlayStation 3. Those senseless overestimates hugely disappoint me and other fans still waiting. As I can see by far, I give away most of my hopes to the Wii. Please understand this opinion because I believe it is true.

I knew this would happen.

They're just so cocky thinking that they can launch the console at the date the claimed, and I'm not even sure if they can ship 2 million units. Oh well that's Sony for you.

Bang! Bang! Sony Shoots Self in Foot Twice

First, there was a delay because of Blu-ray and now there's a delay because of... Blu-ray. Sony has put so much gamble into this "not-ready-for-the-spotlight" technology that in so doing it gave Microsoft's Xbox 360 a gaurenteed increase of at least 20% market share in consoles. All that for a technology that is still all hype and no promise. So dumb. No matter... while I was hoping for a PS3 I've been enjoying my 360 since November and will keep right on enjoying it for another 6 months or so when PS3s finally start showing their face in stores. No need to hurry now since I've got a console at least as good, if not better (360 will probably have 5-10 X the amount of titles as PS3 by the time they launch the console; 360 games keep slowly but surely getting much better in graphics, gameplay, etc, with each passing month, etc., etc.). Right on, Sony! Seems you can't do anything right lately...

am i really suprise

Hello no this is the same company that said that they will be able to do a world launch better that Microsoft. This is also the same company that said that they would do a 2 price console like Microsoft, but guess what they did it anyways and this is the same company that started this format war when know one really wanted it and now it looks like because they wanted to switch to blue ray it looks like it killing them in the end. Everyone knew that they would make it in time and the fact that they haven’t started production on the systems yet this news doesn’t come as a surprise to me.

Not a problem...I'm guaranteed one at launch

I've been assured that I will get a PS3 the first time around (confirmed through the store selling them). I'm actually not in any hurry to get it. It will come out when it comes out.

However, considering a shortage this season, I may just turn that around and throw it up on ebay...for a price!

Any takers? :)
