First scanner wouldn't scan a typed white page w/o creating "shading" around the page border in the final scan. Called support & tried several software changes that didn't work. Months later I called again & found out that HP decided it was a design flaw. To their credit, HP sent a new scanner. To their discredit, the problem is better now, but it is still there. Software preference changes have no effect. Reminds me of old cheap copiers that "greyed" every copy they made so everyone could tell it was a copy. Wouldn't buy this scanner again. Feel as though I wasted my money.

Once the software kinks are worked out, it's a great scanner.
I also had the same problem of every scan being way too grey. I called support and they did not ...
I also had the same problem of every scan being way too grey. I called support and they did not know of this problem, but I eventually figured it out myself. To make a long story short, some tinkering with the resolution settings eliminated that problem.

The other problem out of the box is that the HP Director program will not open if you are running Internet Explorer 7. I could scan, but could not open the program to adjust settings and access advanced options. Support told me to go back to IE 6, which I did and works fine. Not a problem for me since I use Firefox anyway. But may be an annoyance for others.

All that said, once I figured all this out, the scanner works great. Nice speed, excellent quality and very easy to use. No problems anymore. Read more

This is a great business class scanner. The Scanjet line is widely supported by other manufacturers so there is little likelehood that a program will not work with it. Any that are picky can use the Commercial TWAIN standard driver that comes with it. As long as you only use raster image file formats this scanner is great.

Tha package includes separate driver CD's for both Mac and PC but does not include nore have I found drivers for Linux/Unix. The repair replacement policy is great. Like hard disk manufacturers if there is a problem that their friendly Tech Support staff can not resolve they will cross ship out a new component. When it arrives just box up the non functional component and paist on the provided return shipping label.

The real down side for this unit for me is the elimination of HP's PrecisionScan Pro driver software and its great support for vector files (zoom/scalable) file formats. They went to a new software package "HP Director" when they went from the 5400 series to the 5500 series. Read more
