The good: Customizable weights and grips; most sensitive laser sensor available; flexible configuration software; free-spinning scroll wheel.

The bad: Grip attachment and weight kit hardware are too convoluted; inconveniently designed buttons.

We've long been fans of Logitech's gaming mice, but the new G9 Laser Mouse feels like a collection of missed opportunities. Yes, it introduces a handful of new technologies, bringing it in line with or surpassing other high-end gaming mice, at least from the perspective of on-paper features. We certainly appreciate some of what Logitech has to offer, but too many elements bother us to earn the G9 a recommendation over the G5 Laser Mouse, especially given the G9's much higher $99 price tag.

The G9 Laser Mouse is the first significant departure from the core design of Logitech's game or performance mice in at least four years. The familiar, bloated peanut-style design instead makes way for a narrow base unit that can accept either of two angular overlay attachments that come with the mouse. The idea of the two attachments is to let you customize the grip of the G9 to your preference. No other mouse lets you so thoroughly change its overall feel, although we wish that taking off the attachment was a one-handed operation. Because of the overhanging plastic around the release button, you need two hands to pop the grip off.

Customizable grips might be new to gaming mice, but the G9's redesigned weight system remains more or less the same in concept as that on the G5, with a minor twist. The G9 is different in that the weight tray slides into the heel of the mouse, rather than into a bay at the bottom as with the G5. Logitech conceived this new design and the new, parallelogram-shaped weights themselves to make you feel like you're loading a clip into a handgun. It's less satisfying than it sounds, and even annoying because the detachable grip piece now blocks access to the weight slot. That makes changing the weights a multistep process, furthering our irritation at needing two hands to remove the grip.

To be fair, once you get the weights and the grip set to your liking, you might not ever switch them out, so the cumbersome ins-and-outs of making those adjustments aren't that problematic in the long run. What's worse is the overall feel of the button placement.

The G9's two main buttons are fine (and also hard to screw up). But the two thumb-side buttons, the scroll wheel, and even the two buttons dedicated to scrolling through the various sensitivity settings all just feel wrong. The thumb and dpi buttons are narrow little strips that require too much conscious thumb or finger positioning to press them accurately. Our impression isn't limited to that of one reviewer's hand; multiple members of CNET's editorial staff had the same complaints.

And while we welcome the addition of the free-spinning scroll wheel to Logitech's gaming mice (as on the Logitech MX Revolution), it's not as useful as those we've seen elsewhere because you can't change it from free-spinning to the more typical stepped movement on the fly. We suspect the reason is that the original design required you to push down on the scroll wheel to change between spin modes, but on a gaming mouse, pushing down on the scroll wheel typically gives you a third button function. On the G9, the scroll wheel retains its third-button capability, and you have to press a separate button on the underside of the mouse to switch between free and stepped scrolling. That effectively eliminates changing modes on the fly. True, the free-spinning mode is most effective for navigating long documents, and most game applications of a scroll wheel don't need that much freedom, but we think Logitech could have found a more elegant solution.

As with most gaming mice, the G9 has a programmable laser sensor, but its 3,200dpi upper limit is the highest we've heard of. We find that 2,000dpi is more than adequate for scrolling quickly across a high-resolution monitor, so we have a feeling we're crossing into overkill territory with 3,200dpi. You can use Logitech's software to customize both the sensitivity settings as well as the polling rate (the accuracy of the laser readings, at the cost of system performance), which now goes to 1,000MHz. Logitech also includes buttons for toggling between five different sensitivity presets (with a color-customizable indicator LED on the mouse itself), although we're also happy to report that you can map the dpi buttons to other key commands in the software. Those buttons might not be the easiest to use, but at least it's an option, and one not offered by the Microsoft Sidewinder.

The ability to switch mouse config presets and sensitivity on the fly is just a great feature which I use all the time when switching between games and even working/gaming.

CNET, I visit your site for nearly any piece of gear I'm interested in, but please, get die-hard users to review die-hard gear. Under more than one circomstance have I noticed that top-in-class gear got the same time put into the review as any other mid-line device.

Second... the grip and weight you choose are, apart from tryout, simply definitive, so why compromise any functionality to somehow 'make it easier to remove the grip or change the weight'?

Anyway...

The ability to customize the width and well... anything is for me, a breath of fresh air from the preious slew of oversized, overly ergonomic (nearly forcing your hand into a position) mice. And yes, I am comparing mainly against G5 here, since the statement that the G9 would not best it is, for me, a false statement.

I do agree on the side button placement thing, kind of. It somehow feels like they are too far to the back, but my fingers are quite long. Still, it took only minor time to adjust to this. The feel of the side buttons is not as crispy no, because of a lot of key travel. this is because the detachable casings include the buttons, so they need the travel to contact the mouse body.

Apart from that, all other controls are where and how they belong imo.

Pick one up yourself, or better, borrow it from someone and use it all day. Then switch back to your G5 or diamondback and notice just why the G9 is sharper in all aspects.

Summary: My previous mouse was a Razer Deathadder, and a lovely thing at that. When it came time to upgrade and hand down, I opted for the G9, and by god I love the little bugger.

While it took some getting used to the size (the Deathadder is a HUGE mouse, nearly half again the length of the G9), I adapted quickly enough. The only thing that bugs me at all is the thumb buttons; my Deathadder had nice, resistant, loud side buttons, while those of the G9 are, by comparison, quite soft. Still, that is a minor issue at worst.

The build quality is divine, the buttons responsive, and where some users claim to have experienced 'wiggle' in the snap-on grips, I have experienced none. The custom-colo LED for the DPI display is bling, but it's cute enough to count as icing.

Yes, friends, this mouse is a dear, and it's a dear that you can color as you please. Totally worth the money.

Anyway, after Prime Possum died trying to defend the south island I had an idea, but soon lost it in a game of blackjack. Retiring to my Peruvian boathouse the call came in. I asked what the hell it was doing in my house without knocking but soon realised the message it bore was of grave importance. I was to travel to the newer Zealand and battle Kong, King of the Kongs.

Several seconds later I was in my S90 Torturer, the ' R.A.F. Amy Winehouse', and flying over the Pacific, then the Specific, and then Especially. I swung in low and fired my machine guns at the beast. He moaned, and it was at that time I knew I was not fighting King Kong, but Celine Dion! I knew what I had to do. Celine Dion, as you know, is vulnerable only to laser guided missile. But alas!, my laser was in for repair. I went to the local computer store and purchased a Logitech G9 Laser Mouse and aimed it at the Canadian singer. The missile fired, hitting her square in the naval.

And that's how I defeated Celine Dion. But you already knew that. Take care, but be sure to pay for it, because if you don't that's stealing.

I also didn't find this mouse very comfortable as it's small and bulky. apart from the quality issues and size (which is a personal thing) this mouse performed very well. I have since moved to a G9 and Habu which I both find better in quality and comfort.

I rate G9 higher then Cnet

Summary: After I saw the Cnet review, I was alittle nervous in purchasing it. Seeing other owner's review, I decided to give it a shot. I previously own the MX518, G7, MXRevo <==(this mouse sucks btw). So after I returned the MX Revo, I decided to go back to corded since my room are having some problems cordless products. I didn't want to get the G5 since its pretty much the same as my old G7. I picked the G9 and loved it since (Just bought it today btw). Even with my small hands, I am using the large grip which is more comfortable. All the 4 buttons are easy to reach which is very very important as CNET said the buttons layout sucked. I need all the buttons for games damn it . The wheel is nice but I am still using the traditional mode on it.
It has all the quality of a good mouse.
Looks cool, feels excellent, accurate laser, easy to reach buttons BUT there is one down side to this. Since the outer shell is interchangable, it does jiggle when u lift up the mouse. A simple scotch tape under the shell and bang, its fixed and feels nice and firm. Personally I really don;t think a $100 top of the line mouse should require scotch tape to reinforce...... but what can u do.
