Onkyo TX-SR605: HDMI 1.3 and next-gen surround decoding, for an amazing $600
(Credit: Onkyo USA)For the past 12 to 18 months, astute readers may have noticed an increased bit of hedging in our reviews for AV receivers. Yes, even low-end receivers offer more features and flexibility than $1,500 models did just three or four years ago and yes, there are plenty of great-sounding receivers available out there at great prices. But smart shoppers looking for a no-compromise, future-proof AV receiver have been stymied, even if they've been willing to pay upwards of $2,000.
At least, that was the case--until today. Onkyo has become the first mainstream manufacturer to officially announce an array of home audio products that offer the two big features that have been MIA on home audio products to date: HDMI 1.3; and onboard decoding of Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks found on HD DVD and Blu-ray discs. The news itself wasn't a surprise, as most of the details had been leaked on the Web earlier this month. And there is no doubt that other manufacturers will be announcing similarly equipped receivers in the next few weeks and months. But because specs, pricing, and availability have been confirmed, we can now say authoritatively that Onkyo looks to be offering some of the most exciting--and surprisingly affordable--A/V receivers seen in recent years.
Full specs for each of the seven announced receivers are highlighted below. In addition to HDMI 1.3 and Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD support (on all but the two low-end models), most offer support for XM and Sirius satellite radio (with the respective subscriptions and accessories). All seven models offer Audyssey automatic speaker calibration, 7.1-channel analog inputs, at least two HDMI inputs and one output, and compatibility with Onkyo's iPod docks.
The 2007 Onkyo receiver lineup is as follows (note that this is nearly identical to the leaked specs published earlier this month, but with confirmed/official details and pricing; all models are available in black or silver):
TX-SR505 ($380, now available)
7.1 A/V receiver, 75 watts per channel
2 HDMI inputs (video passthrough only; audio requires separate connection)
Audyssey 2EQ auto speaker calibration
TX-SR575 ($480, now available)
7.1 A/V receiver, 80 watts per channel
2 HDMI inputs (video pass-through only; audio requires separate connection)
Component video conversion (composite/S-video converted to component output)
Audyssey 2EQ auto speaker calibration
XM- and Sirius-ready
TX-SR605 ($600, May 2007)
7.1 A/V receiver, 90 watts per channel
2 HDMI 1.3a inputs, with HDMI conversion of analog video
Onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio
Faroudja DCDi video processing
Audyssey 2EQ auto speaker calibration
XM- and Sirius-ready
TX-SR705 ($900, July 2007)
7.1 A/V receiver, 100 watts per channel
3 HDMI 1.3a inputs, with HDMI upconversion
Onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio
Faroudja DCDi video processing
THX Select2 Certified
Audyssey MultEQ auto speaker calibration
XM- and Sirius-ready
Multiroom functionality for two zones
TX-SR805 ($1,100, May 2007)
7.1 A/V receiver, 130 watts per channel
3 HDMI 1.3a inputs, with HDMI upconversion
Onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio
Faroudja DCDi video processing
THX Select2 Certified
Audyssey MultEQ auto speaker calibration
XM- and Sirius-ready
Multiroom functionality for three zones
TX-SR875 ($1,700, June 2007)
7.1 A/V receiver, 140 watts per channel
4 HDMI 1.3a inputs, with HDMI upconversion to 1080p
Onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio
HQV Reon-VX Video processing
THX Ultra2 Certified
Audyssey MultEQ auto speaker calibration
XM- and Sirius-ready
Multiroom functionality for three zones
TX-NR905 ($2,100, August 2007)
7.1 A/V receiver, 140 watts per channel
4 HDMI 1.3a inputs, with HDMI upconversion to 1080p
Onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio
HQV Reon-VX Video processing
THX Ultra2 Certified
Audyssey MultEQ auto speaker calibration
XM- and Sirius-ready
Multiroom functionality for three zones
Networking capabilities for Internet radio and WMA files
HD Radio
USB input for MP3 players
The whole lineup is impressive, but the sweet spot--especially for those on a reasonable budget--definitely looks to be the TX-SR705 and TX-SR605. Given their amazing feature sets (including options that were heretofore unavailable), their $900 and $600 price points are downright disruptive. While a hands-on evaluation is needed for a final determination--and, to be sure, CNET's on the list for one of the first SR605 review samples--the mere existence of both receivers makes anything else in the sub-$1,000 range pale by comparison (sorry, Yamaha). Personally, I'd hold off buying any A/V receiver until we determine if these Onkyos--and their eventual competitors--can deliver on their groundbreaking potential.

Wow, what a super receiver for the money!

Pros: So many hook-up opinions with easy set-up

Summary: After quite a bit of research, this is the first receiver I've ever purchased. Written by a true non-audiophile, I found the set-up with the manual to be very easy. I had it up and running in under 5 minutes with HDMI only set-up with the Oppo 981-HD DVD, Scientific 8300 HD cable box, and a Vizio 1080P 47 inch LCD, and Monoprice 24 AWG netjacket cables-one 6 foot and two 3 foot. What a nice set-up with a super receiver. My finshed lower level system shakes the house!

Great sound for this Value for money receiver.
by bzgrowllaa on December 26, 2007
Pros: Lots of hi-end components (HDMI 1.3) and features (Audessy eq) found in a resonably priced player
Cons: The remote is a bit big for my liking.
Summary: FIRST LOOK
Packed well, Instruction manual was pretty good. Remote caught me by surprise with it size.

Packed well, Instruction manual was pretty good. Remote caught me by surprise with it size.
CONNECTIVITY
Setup was fairly straight forward with customizable digital audio inputs and ability to rename inputs. I have it hooked to my Panasonic 50" plasma, a mixture of Infinity 750's and 1200's Home Theater satellite speakers and a custom made BASH 500W JBL dual subwoofer. My inputs include components like a satellite receiver, a DVD player, a audio/video media player, an Xbox and soon a HTPC. The outputs of these devices vary from s-video to component to HDMI.
SOUND
I have been using the Onkyo for about 2 months now and the receiver has exceeded my expectations both visually and audibly. Movies are very immersible. Music is also very sharp and crisp. The Onkyo is highly customizable also has an nice OSD for tweaking more in depth options. The HDMI out was very convenient but so far I have not been able to get the output running to the plasma's external speakers.
COOLING
The 705 has two silent fans underneath the unit which blow air up over the amp fins. The 605 version does not have these fans from what I have heard. The 605 model according to web forums has an issue with popping. The 705 does not have this issue. The 705 also does a better job of cooling.
OTHER
The receiver has everything you could want in a mid range receiver plus many features only found in Hi-end receivers. Remote is huge but has a manual back lit button on the side. I don't use it as I have a Harmony 880 remote.6 out of 6 users found this user opinion helpful.

Not perfect, but VERY good for the price

Cons: Video processing not great, runs very warm, Denon (to my ears) still sounds a little better

Summary: I've been using the TX-SR705 for about a week now. All in all, I'm very pleased with my purchase. Onkyo's receiver lineup for 2007 is very impressive; offering HDMI switching and decoding for both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA for under $1000 (or, for the SR605, under $500) is a pretty amazing value.
My previous receiver was a Denon that was only about a year old. However, it lacked support for the new HD audio codecs and only had two HDMI inputs. To get the features I wanted on a new Denon receiver, I would have had to spend $1200 and still only get two HDMI inputs. After a lot of research, I decided to go with the '705. Denon and Onkyo are really the only two brands I spent much time considering. While Sony, Pioneer, and Yamaha have all gotten a lot better over the last few years, for me they still just don't rank at the top. I still think Denon is the best; to my ears they produce a warmer, more natural sound while the Onkyo is a little "brighter." But, when you factor in the price difference, the Onkyo is hard to pass up.
I found the '705 easy to set up and use. The remote is very good and if you don't want to spend the money on a Logitech Harmony universal, this is a good alternative. While the on-screen display is nowhere close to the new Denon and Sony GUI's, it will still work easily for most people. I've got my DirecTV HD DVR, DVD-recorder/VCR, HD-DVD player, and Blu-ray player all hooked up through the receiver and it handles them all with room to spare. It's powering a 5.1 Bose speaker system. Movies sound GREAT, especially using the new HD audio codecs or uncompressed PCM audio! People who say that "plain old" Dolby Digital and DTS on their DVD is good enough don't know what they're missing!
Sadly, I agree with the Cnet review of the '605 and '805 that video is not as good on this receiver as audio is. The upconverter leaves a lot to be desired. The '705 does poorly when it has to deinterlace an incoming signal and produces noticeable "jaggies." It also seems to lack (or just have really poor) 2:3 pull-down processing. Of course, most all receivers at this price point suffer from video processing problems and you'd have to spend nearly twice as much to get anything with HQV processing, so at least the '705 is not alone here. I'd just suggest leaving any upscaling and deinterlacing to either your TV or disk player.
In the end, I'm very pleased with my purchase and when you consider the price, it's an almost unbeatable combination of quality, features, and budget. If, like me, you just can't bring yourself to spend the money on a Denon, this is a great second best option!4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: For the price (I paid $580 with shipping) its an excellent choice. It has many great features and is some what a head of itself. So you can buy in confidence that it won't be considered obsolete in 6 mos. In other user reviews, people complained about it running hot. I've had mine for about a month now and it does get warm. My old reciever,HK AVR85, got a lot hotter. So I think the heat is normal. I know the thx certified is only select 2 and not ultra. But I havn't seen any type of thx certifaction in this price range before. For those who don't know about thx, its a certification to meet certain requirements, ie.. actual power output, set by thx labs. As with anything else there is something always better but that also means bigger jump in price. This reciever has many of the same features or more when compared to some $1200 recievers. This reciever is truly a best buy.

Best Reciever For The Money
by njeske on January 12, 2008

Summary: This is by far the best reciever out there. 3 HDMI 1.3a inputs and 1 output for plenty of connectivity. Unlike most other recievers from other manufacturers, Onkyo allows audio from HDMI sources to play over the speakers, so there's no need for digital audio cables. Everything can be hooked up via HDMI. Super simple. It's also quite a bit smaller and lighter than most other recievers with this feature set. The OSD for setting the reciever up is well laid out and intuitive. Overall, I can't think of anything I don't like about this reciever. If I had to pick one thing, I guess I could say that it takes a couple seconds for audio from HDMI sources to begin to play over the speakers. So when I fast forward my DVR, I have to make sure I resume playback a couple seconds before the commercials are actually over so that I don't miss any of the shows audio. But there's not really anything wrong with that. I'm pretty sure most recievers using HDMI audio will have that issue. For me, it's a small adjustment in my viewing habits in order to have an all-HDMI setup.

Aside from some issues with the speaker setup i've had no issues. Absolutely love it.
I have this receiver paired up with Fluance speakers. I Bi-Amped my front mains and the receiver gave me no additional hazzels in doing so. Menus are easy to get through and understand. Setuping components via the onscreen menu was much easier then i had anticipated.
Currently 5.1 sound is excellent, the receiver does a fantasic job of powering everything. Plan to eventually upgrade to 7.1 sound.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: This receiver was great! I absolutely loved it, but I turned it on last week and noticed a hum coming from all of my speakers. It was especially loud coming from the subwoofer.
I contacted Onkyo and after being on the line for 45 minutes I finally got through to a rep who had me try several things, nothing helped. After that he concluded that it needed to be serviced. I'm stuck paying for the shipping on their defective item, but at least they'll fix it. (hopefully) The rep said he'd never heard of this problem. He must have been new because I googled "Onkyo TX SR705 Hum" and found a litany of similar complaints.
On top of that, it's going to take 4-6 weeks to fix it.
So far, I would rate Onkyo's customer service "OK" at best (that's being generous). My experience with this product has not been good. I would've purchased something else if I had it to do over again.
