Make sure you have a HDTV with HDMI inputs. The setup I found to be easy and it only tokk a few minutes to get everything set the way I liked. Big picture quality difference over my old progressive scan 480p DVD player. Hooked up to your TV's HDMI port this new player will be able to tell which resolutions your TV is capable of and gray out the ones it is not capable of doing. For me that was 576p (which I wouldn't use anyway) and 1080p (which is fine with me seeing that I only have a TV capable of 1080i). The 1080i upconvert made Pearl Harbor look excellent compared to how I had watched the movie previously. Althougth, the picture is not as good as real HDTV programming, it is still damn good for taking a crappy original picture and upconverting it into a eye pleasing near 1080i pseudo high def. In case you might have heard differently there is fast forawrd and reverse on the remote. Hitting Reverse once brings you back to the beginning of the last scene BUT holding down reverse allows you to rewind at 2x speed. Releasing and holding it down again increases that to 4x and so on. I'm happy with my $62 purchase that will make my movies look better while I wait for the HD DVD vs Blu Ray war to be decided.

7 out of 10 - Very good First time purchaser of a Philips Product & like their simple design approach

First Impression Review: Heck, these days DVD players are a dime a dozen and how hard can it really be for a manufacturer to screw one up...after all we are dealing with digital technolgy now. As technology marches on, the lines between the "name brands" and not so well known brands/upstarts is blurring.
That said, this is my first time buying a Philips product and I am certainly not let down. This little guy cost me a mere $64 at Best Buy and that to me is great value for the money becuase this unit can "upscale" all the way up to 1080p HD. Well, I "only" have a 720p HDTV (Sony KDF-37H1000 - see also my review of this TV on CNET) but still, coming from Standard TV and non progressive DVD players I am quite amazed at the picture quality as it plays my regular DVD titles in HD (720p in my case).
Other initial thoughts: The remote is kinda small for my large hands. The unit has a noticeable few seconds delay when turning on and at first we would click the remote control power again thinking it had not turned on so we kept turning it off. Now we know the delay we just point right at it and watch the standby amber light go away and wait a bit for it to turn on. I highly recommend the use of the HDMI cable connection to take full advantage of the audio/video quality. There sure seems to be a heck of a lot of settings you can do with this unit like night mode and various audio and video settings...it even has a USB port on the front panel for viewing your computer images like jpeg so seems pretty comprehensive to me.
9 out of 10 - Spectacular More than a DVD player
What most of the other reviews are missing is the DIVX and AVI movie file playing capability of this unit. ...
What most of the other reviews are missing is the DIVX and AVI movie file playing capability of this unit. It will play DIVX / AVI movies from any USB storage device. Before setting my system up with a 350GB external USB harddrive, I would simply download and store movie files on a DVD or sometimes simple drag and drop movies unto a USB flash drive. Simply plug in the USB flash drive and watch movies upconverted to 1080p using the HDMI output. How many other units can do that for $60?
It's considered a DVD player but I hardly ever use DVD's. With the external harddrive, I play all of my movies and music straight from the menu selected files.
I can wait in peace for BlueRay and HD DVD to figure out who is king. By that time I don't think we will need DVD's.

We've run every kind of disk, new, older, commercial, DVD-R, NTSC, PAL, and this unit jams and stalls on every disk, and every kind of disk.
Then it's slow to eject the disk, so we could put it into some other player to finish.

This is one great little player . It does everything they say it will and very well . Because of all the reviews I read on this and not knowing if i should go hd or blue ray I decided to go with a 1080p upconverter (is that a word?) Had professional installer hook up new 72" samsung tv, onkyo receiver and direct dvd hd . He kind of chuckled @ the lil philips until he hooked it up and tested it . He said (wow ! this thing works great !) I am not a techy by any means but i dont know how you could a better unit no matter the price .

Purchased this to work with my Acer PH530 projector. Right away, using HDMI, I got HDCP handshake issues where the player is trying to establish an encrypted connection to the projector and fails. Contacting Philips support has been futile. They act dumbfounded by the problem even though a quick search of major video forums online reveals the problem to be widespread. Philips support hung up on me a couple of times when I reached a point in troubleshooting that it was obvious nothing more could be done. I just want my money back but they will not comply. This player could work really well for you but there is a chance it could be incompatible - if it is, then Philips will not help you.

This is my third philips dvd player I bought and love everyone of them. My first was a DVP642 it played divx but lacked the HDMI and usb port. Thats what made me buy the DVP5982. I love everything about this player except the 8 char display when using the usb port, that makes it hard to read the file names. My third philips dvd player was the Portable PET1002 for my son. That thing rocks even more because it has USB and SD card slot. PHILIPS you Rock!
