Looks like samsung corrects (or almost) the problems of the HD860, no freezing, dont need to change the resolution every time, DivX suport is there and no resets. The picture is cristal clear in 720p/1080i on my LCDTV (same brand). I think is the best image you can get from a DVD. The delay time in the remote is still there, (sorry for my english).

4 out of 10 - Mediocre There are much better players for the same price

I owned this DVD player for 28 days. I toughed it out that long, and then returned it under the 30 day satisfaction guarantee from the retailer. It was an inexpensive unit, so I didn?t have high expectations. But, I found it lacked some key basic features, I have learned to appreciate in virtually all other DVD players.
When I bought it, I had read the reviews, and already had an idea about the sluggish remote control reaction? how bad could it be? I wondered. Terrible. Honestly, it is terrible. You really are not sure if the unit has received the signal or not after you press a button.
Secondly, there is no way for the DVD player to tell you how much time is remaining on a disc. Something, I?ve taken for granted in the past (even my first CD player in 1985 had this feature). But, our viewing habits often put us in situations where, we?ll look at the time remaining and decide if we finish the movie, or go to bed.
The cosmetics on this unit are not, in my opinion great. Although, not deal breakers, they might be something you consider. The front of the unit has some quirky slanted/rounded bevels on the front display plate. Also the front panel is extremely high-gloss. If placed on top of a traditional square flat-black faced component, the combined look is awkward.
Although, I was not able to really tell a quality difference in up conversions over HDMI, it was obvious that the 720p mode on my particular unit had a flaw in it, in that image was shifted to the right 10 pixels or so, except for the bottom row of pixels, but the last row had a 10 pixel gap in the middle of it. I cannot explain this, on letterboxed movies it?s not noticeable (except for menu screens etc), but it was unpleasant on full-screen or 16:9 presentations. This did not happen on 480p or 1080i mode.
My system configuration has HDMI connector to the TV and digital coax to my receiver for audio. This configuration worked with our previous DVD set up. Some of the time, we watch DVDs with the audio through the receiver (TV volume set to mute/off); and some of the time, we listen to the DVD audio through the TV. However, this unit appears to disable HDMI audio, if Coax audio is connected for non-PCM audio output. Which would mean stopping a disc and switching audio mode through the on-screen menu, if you wanted to listen through the TV speakers. I did not like this approach.
The one nice thing about this unit, was that it engages a screen saver if paused for more than a couple of minutes.
After 28 days, I noticed a Sony model for the same price I paid for the Samsung, and decided to make the switch, I am happy I did. I will review the Sony at a later date, but all of things I disliked about the Samsung do not exist with the Sony ? and I also instantly noticed much improved sound and video - better blacks and dark blues.

I was looking for a cheap DVD player for our new bedroom tv, a Samsunf R86 32". Because I'm very concerned about picture quality, sound and connectivity I chose the HD870. I am very satisfied with the 720p upscaling, and I also like the small design. As other reviewers mention, the remote is below average, with slow response - or rather: with bad buttons that require a firm press. Response is 100% when I use the tv remote (one of the reasons I chose a Samsung DVD - my wife hates remotes lying around...)
Highly recommended if you are waiting until the HD-war is over (HD DVD vs. BlueRay). Pay no more than USD 70 / EUR 100 in EU

Speaking strictly in terms of the hd870's 1080i output quality, it outperformed a similarly priced philips dvp5960. The differences were VERY obvious, the hd870 simply delivered the better 1080 picture at default settings. But this is is only what should be expected of anything claiming to deliver a 1080 picture. That said I have two gripes about this player - 1 - No jog/shuttle control. What, who cares? Previous Samsungs had them, now they take away a good thing? How silly! I liked it and want it back! 2 - Remote control response is extremely disappointing - it's a very fundamental thing and pointedly missing after you spend money, no matter how much or how little: press doodad, get feedback. This is a step back from every single previous samsung player (any DEVICE, period?). I find myself repeatedly hitting buttons before the unit responds. *blowing raspberry* OK for $80. I'll put up with it until the hd-bd arena matures - in content and price. Umm, maybe.

Excelent!! I recomend it! Best U can get for this price and also has a great design. The remote control from my Samsung LCD TV is fully compatible with this DVD. And don't forget: has a HDMI output. The sad part is that the response time of the remote is slow.

May be defective unit. Samsung's website suggests color problem is improper set-up as S-Video instead of P- or I-Scan. Display says it's set up as P-scan (Component Video). P- & I- look the same to me. S- is unwatchable (as I would expect without any cables hooked to it).
Otherwise seems fine with same slow response from remote as mentioned by previous reviewer. Did not check all features such as angles, etc. Do not have HDMI connection on TV - cannot tell about up-conversion feature.
