Reviewed by Jasmine France Review date: 09/01/06 Release date: 08/31/06 The good: The Samsung YP-K5 features a unique and stylish design with a built-in, slide-out speaker, and the interface is stunning; includes an FM radio and cool visual effects. The player offers excellent sound quality, and the included earbuds are decent. The bad: Due to the speaker, the YP-K5 is on the large and heavy side for a flash player; the touch controls take some getting used to and attract smudges; display could be bigger; expensive. The bottom line: The Samsung YP-K5 is a unique MP3 player with a fun interface and great sound quality; it may be bulky around the middle, but it's an excellent choice if you want to share your tunes at the drop of a dime. Fall is an anxiously awaited time of year in the gadget world because it's when tech companies roll out some of their hottest gadgets in preparation for the holiday buying season. September in particular seems to be the prime month for MP3 player announcements, with last year marking the debut of the Apple iPod Nano. It looks like 2006 is set to continue this tradition, with the sleek Samsung YP-K5 leading the way. This unique flash player, available in 2GB ($210) and 4GB ($260) capacities, may be a bit pricey and thick around the middle, but that's not stopping it from turning some heads. In the closed position, the K5 isn't that remarkable looking--rather reminiscent of the Olympus M:robe MR-100--but its smooth, black body feels good in the hand and its shiny face is eye-catching. Once the device is powered on, the visual experience becomes even more pleasing. Like the M:robe, the K5 features touch-sensitive controls, backlit in pleasing shades of blue. A center circle select key is surrounded by four arrow indicators, while Back and Menu selectors sit kitty-corner to one another on the outskirts. A smallish (1.7-inch) color OLED screen resides above the controls, and along the top edge is the power/hold switch. The bottom edge of the player houses the headphone jack and a proprietary USB port. The K5 is on the large side for a flash player--it measures 3.9 by 1.9 by 0.7 inches and weighs a relatively hefty 3.8 ounces--but there's a good reason for this. If you flip the player on its side and push up the bottom edge, a built-in speaker slides out. What's great about this is that the speaker is designed in such a way that it angles itself up, not only propping the face of the player at an ideal viewing angle, but pointing the speakers up and forward so as to direct the sound at the listener. We've seen MP3 players with built-in speakers before, but none have shown this kind of ingenuity. What's even better is that the speakers actually sound OK--tinny and lacking in bass, but certainly passable, and better than any other built-ins we've heard. And they get quite loud. Another cool feature is that the interface automatically rotates when the speakers are pushed out. And we're totally smitten with the K5's interface in general. The playback screen is dominated by a large EQ graphic, below which song information scrolls (you also get a battery meter and a time-elapsed counter on this screen). When you don't touch the controls for a while, this screen fades to a screensaver of your choosing (analog clock, various animation graphics, photos). The music menu offers the usual choices of Artists, Albums, Playlists, and so on, and as you scroll through these options (or any other list, for that matter), a bouncing sphere indicates your position--cute! Our favorite is the top menu, though, which is a bit difficult to describe in words. Its main selections are represented by different images--headphones for Music, a wrench for Settings, and so on--which are made up of animated blue dots. As you shuttle through the options, the dots morph into the next image. It's just a little visual effect, but it adds a certain flair to the K5 and makes it fun to use. The K5 comes with a rather decent pair of rubber-tipped earbuds, a USB cable, and a software disc. The last includes Samsung's Media Studio 5, but it's not necessary to use this to transfer music to the player. The K5 is compatible with various jukeboxes and services, including Windows Media Player 10 (which is one of the system requirements for the player), Rhapsody, and Napster. Supported audio formats are MP3 and WMA, including DRM-10 for use with to-go services. The device also has an FM radio with seemingly limitless presets, and it displays JPEG photos, though we don't recommend it as a photo viewer; images were rather dark and had a noticable screendoor effect. As with other Samsung players, the K5 includes various sound effects, such as 3D Sound, Bass Boost, and Concert Hall. You can even use the player as an alarm clock. Overall, the K5 proved to be a great little performer throughout testing. The touch pad was not overly sensitive, and the device responded immediately to all commands. Even through the included headphones, sound quality was top notch. Through our Shure E4c test 'phones, tunes coming from the K5 sounded stellar, with rich mids, all-encompassing bass, and a sparkly high end. We got clear, detailed sound across all genres of music. And the sound effects provided some interesting twists, especially Concert Hall. Rated battery life for the player is 6 hours through the speakers or 30 hours through headphones, and CNET Labs was able to eek out a more than respectable 32.7 hours. I find the K5 a great option for those tired or wary of Apple products. It provides a longer battery life (an amazing 30 hours) and speakers within the device allow for usage without headphones. The graphics give a sense of modernity, as well as giving a personal touch with all the options available. Overall, it is a great buy.

I have owned many mp3 players including the 30gb ipod video, samsumg t9, zune, creative zen vision m, toshiba gigabeat, and the archos av500 100gb and the sound that this one reproduces with my ultimate ears super fi 5eb is amazing.
I hate it when mp3 players have a bass boost feature that is basically useless because it muddies up the overall sound, well that isnt the case with this baby.
The bass boost gives a more defined, powerful low end and the mids and highs sound as clear as ever.. In my opinion, if you listen to hip hop or any other bass enhanced music, you owe it to yourself to give this player a shot...You wont be disappointed. In my opinion, samsung has the market cornered in mp3 players with 4gb or less...If only the rest of the world would catch on and give this player the support it needs...PS I am a grown man with grown man sized hands, so I dont want some teeny tiny mp3 player that I have to use my fingernails to hit the buttons nor do I want something so thin that I could risk losing it because I cant feel it in my pocket so the size of the player is in my opinion, perfect

This player should be chosen based on the fact that it stands out from all the other players because of the attached speakers on the player itself. These two small speakers slide out from under the player to fill a decent size room with tunes from the player. The look of the player is very nice with gloss facing and blue glow buttons with blue control screen. The sound quality from the speakers is very good considering the size of the speakers, and the headphones sound even better. With only 4 GB max of room to hold songs and pictures, if u dont plan on utilizing the external speakers, consider another player.

I saw the Samsung YP-K5 in a retail store along with many others. This one immediately came to my attention with its flashy menu and brightly lit blue touch sensitive buttons. After bringing it home I would use the speakers constantly and still do. You should note however, that when using the FM Radio headphones are required to receive a signal. Also, the volume is reset to a mid level when opening the speakers usually requiring you to adjust it. After a while i felt the need to customize. This came to be a problem since there is not much to change. You can't change the colors, increase the scroll rate, view time remaining, change the theme, set radio to alarm, and much more you would expect for something at this price. Overall it is a great MP3 player with intuitive ideas, it just needs some fine tuning and a bit more time invested in its development.

I love every thing about this player. It functions fine (a little touchy but no worries). Not as bulky as people think, fits in my pocket without being too noticable. The sound is incredible with or w/o headphones, I find myself playing it inside, outside, exerising, 95 percent of the time thru the speakers which brings me to it's only negative...WHY CAN'T YOU PLAY SONGS WHILE CHARGING??? You may want to get a wall charger because charging it from the computer takes forever. I might have to buy another player so I can play one while the other charges. But aside from the charging issue the player is exceptional.

I've seen and used a wide variety of mp3 players. This one is easily the best one I've ever used. The blue touch screen looks great on the black player. The built-in speakers are suprisingly loud and clear. Sorting through songs is a breeze with a large amount of sorting options and fast scrolling. The battery lasts a long time too. It never died out before I recharged it and I use it alot. The only thing I don't like is it that the thing gathers fingerprints quickly but that's nothing a quick cleaning won't fix.

This player rocks. Battery life is awesome. I've gone 4 days at about 4-5 hours a day connected to my computer speakers and have yet to charge it. Coupled with my free two months of free songs to go with Best Buy's Music Download service (Rhapsody) I put as many songs as I can listen to in one day. I love the set song to alarm feature. Where I can set multiple alarms and the song I want to set for the alarm. The preset 3d sound equalizer also is the bomb. Best mp3 player I've purchased. All I need is a case and I'll be set.

I love this little thing, though it's not so small, but considering the built in speakers, it's fine. It looks great, sounds really great (better than Ipod). It's menus are easy to read and use, though the display is not readable under direct sunlight. It can display images, but no videos.. When left "untouched" the display turns into a nice analog clock, but you can't "call" the clock back at will, wich would be useful. The "alarm" function is very useful. The tiny speakers could have beneficiated of better technical design: the speaker panel could have allowed using "flat panel" technology, using all the available space, instead of the actual mini tweeters that are used as speakers. When a musical piece is bass heavy, I can hear speaker "flap" even at low volume. Then, a high pass filter would have been useful when the built in speakers are used. The built in battery makes traveling a pain, since if your batteries go dead while you are on the beach.. you're done. You either need your computer, or the optional ac adaptor to recharge the battery.. Not fun. Oh, by the way, the FM tuner is flawless, and its huge digits make it a real fun to use.
If it was not for these little flaws, I'd give it a 10, so, I give it a 8, and no Ipod will replace it, unless they one day discover what an FM tuner is. How about including a satellite tuner too? would be great.

Wicked sweet menu layout and navigation, easy and intuative. I had this at an impromptu gathering about a year ago and everyone loved it. We actually forgot about the depressing circumstances of why we were together and had a good time. Ah, the power of music. Needless to say while the speakers are small they sound great and this device makes a great gift idea. Especially for a woman it seems because whenever I used it in a social gathering all the ladies would ask the most about it. The screen is smudge and scratch prone, keep an eyeglass wipe handy. I gave this to a girlfriend of mine, she begged me for it. I think she knows I have too many toys already(never enough toys!)...
