CNET Editors' review - Samsung YP-T9 (4GB, black)
![]() Hide
CNET Editor's rating: 8.3 out of 10
Reviewed by Jasmine France Review date: 10/30/06 The good: The sleek, durable Samsung YP-T9 has a user-friendly interface and is packed with features: photo viewing, video playback, gaming capabilities, voice recording, and subscription music support. It sounds great and looks hot; its battery life is also impressive. The bad: The Samsung YP-T9's processor is slow, and side buttons take some getting used to. What's more, the USB port is proprietary, and the device has no UMS mode. The bottom line: Despite a few minor issues, the stylish Samsung YP-T9 is a no-brainer: it's easy to use, packed with features, and sounds fantastic. What more could you ask for? ![]() The YP-T9 is smaller and--dare we say sleeker--than the iPod Nano.
The device's ergonomic five-way control pad makes navigation a breeze (and reminds us of the Rio Carbon). We love the large, center select button, which is nicely indented. However, we're not as crazy about the buttons located along the device's right spine. While the play/pause/power key is fine in this location, we'd prefer to have the Back and Menu buttons located on the front, as it can be tough to hit the correct buttons on such a thin device. Also, the Menu key is a bit misleading: it only pulls up only contextual menus from within the various playback screens (with different options for music, photo, and video), rather than taking you back to the main menu. Once you get used to this, though, it's OK. The context menu during audio playback allows you to quickly set EQs, Play Mode, Play Speed, and background (either album art, your own images, or pulsating graphics.) ![]() The bright, colorful screen displays photos nicely.
We dig the photo organization, too. Rather than offering a standard thumbnail grid, the YP-T9 photo display shows you a larger photo preview box, bordered by three thumbnails. Another impressive touch: the player automatically sets the screen in landscape mode when you start a video. Transferring content is also a snap. Simply use the included Media Studio software or a WMA jukebox, such as Windows Media Player or Rhapsody. (Note: you'll need to use Samsung's software to transfer video, as it automatically codes video into the proprietary SVI format supported by the YP-T9.) The YP-T9, which plays MP3s and WMA files, certainly isn't hurting for features. The only things missing are line-in recording and Mac support (as the YP-T9 is an MTP device). Of course, we'd love to see gapless playback. The YP-T9 does have an FM tuner with autoscan and 30 preset slots--we were pleased to note that the autoscan did an excellent job at picking only the strongest stations, though you can still tune in to weaker stations if you choose. The FM recorder can record up to 192Kbps in MP3. The player also has a built-in microphone for voice recording and even includes a couple of simple games: Baseball and Pizza Delivery. And true to the Samsung legacy, the YP-T9 offers a ton of audio playback features, including the standard shuffle and repeat modes, and 12 EQ presets--Normal, Rock, House, Dance, Jazz, Ballad, Rhythm & Blues, Classical, 3D-User, 3D-Studio, 3D-Stage, 3D-Club--and a nine-band user EQ. The unit also includes a volume limiter feature. Finally, there's the Street Mode function, which "allows you to enjoy the music outdoors more clearly," according to Samsung. The only thing we really noticed while in this mode was a volume boost. Other than navigational lags--a split second when shuttling through menu items and a noticeable delay when skipping tracks--the YP-T9 performed excellently in our tests. It can be tough to browse through a long list of tracks, though you can scroll backwards (a list is essentially a loop, so you can start from the top of a list and search from the bottom up.) Photos looked bright and were well-defined on the color screen, and video looked great--so good that we might even consider viewing a 30-minute short on the small screen. Music sounded fabulous with rich mids, clear highs, and a defined low-end. We recommend swapping out the included earbuds, though, as they get uncomfortable quickly. amsung also managed to pack in a decent battery. CNET Labs squeezed 25.9 hours of music out of the rechargable cell, which is less than the rated 30 hours but impressive nonetheless. At just more than seven hours, video battery life proved to be excellent as well Even with the slight processor lag, the YP-T9 is a joy to use. With good looks, a user-friendly interface, an excellent array of features, and great sound quality, this is a hard device to pass up. (Originally posted on CNET Reviews) | ||||||||||||||||||||

This player is simply AMAZING.I've had a ton of MP3 players..the Nano..the Cowon U3, The Sony Flash player, Iriver and tried the Creative Zen plus. Wow..overall this Samsung is just in a different league. I wanted to step up to a 4gig flash..so first because of reviews I tried the Creative Zen plus. I had read how it feels toy like..in a good way? NO WAY. It feels like a cheap slippery toy. The buttons were uncomfortable..the screen in any kind of sunlight looked dim..and it barely got loud enough.Out of desperation I returned the Creative player..picked up the T9 Samsung..fell in love (**). I was expecting to NOT like it. I figured since Samsung seems to put out a player it seems every 90 days this player..well might be junk. WRONG..It has a feel and look of superior qulity to it. The screen looks awesome at night, day,and in bright sunshine. It FEELS comfortable..almost scary comfortable to navigate. Sounds excellent..has a NINE band EQ that really works adding NO distortion unlike the Ipod's eq. I had a Cowon U3 I just sold. Cowon is noted 4 it's sound..and abilty to play LOUD. This Samsung plays louder staying clean..and well I'm just sort of blown away by this little guy. If CNET or whoever dares to rate the Creative Zen plus higher than the T9 It's time to leave the planet. I hear in Asia this player features bluetooth. Well too bad it doesn't have bluetooth BUT there's no reason to knock this player because it has no bluetooth yet. This Samsung is in another class high above the plastic Creative..and the U3 who's screen u need a microscope to see.
Only the FM radio is just OK..works fine..but no better or worse than other current mp3 players. I think anyone why tries this player will really enjoy it!

After purchasing the Samsung YP-T9 I was pretty excited to see what it could do. I did my research and thought I was buying the right mp3 player, that was yesterday. Today I am returning the Samsung YP-T9. Yes the Samsung has a flashy lcd and built in FM tuner, but I ask this question, is it worth sacrificing gapless playback and functionality? I say NO. It takes the Samsung a long time to turn on and a LONG time to flip between tracks (gapless playback). Say you want to play a specific song from a list of say 900 songs, well good luck finding it on the Samsung. Just try scrolling down a track listing to find a song that starts with an "S" and you will find out what Im talking about. My wife has a Nano and although it does not have all the features of the Samsung, its software and processor blow away the Samsung. I dont know about you, buy I will sacrifice the FM tuner and flashy equilizer for functionality and speed any day of the week. The Samsung has potential, but if it want to compete with other mp3 players, it needs better software.

I really like this mp3 player. Simply it has a lot of wow factors. It is very sleek design can appeal most of people. It is tinier than Nano but little bit ticker but the screen is really nice and the movie is pretty much ¡°Watchable¡± especially with some comedy TV shows. Only downsize of video playing is that it needs to use Samsung software to convert movie files for the right format. Which is not too bad as it is very simple to use and converting doesn't take too much time but would be nicer if the software is more versatile.
As the best all-around player, it does most of things like FM radio, Voice Recording, Text viewer, even fun games. Best of all I love the navigation style. Very simple and user friendly but you can¡¯t navigate songs faster than Ipod though.
I am using YP-T9B which is Bluetooth version. Actually this feature is very useful. You can move around with only the Bluetooth headset in your house. It covers pretty much wide range. Of course you have to buy the headset separately but it is worth it. You can take this T9 to Gym with your friend and let your friend to listen to the Bluetooth headset while you are using ear phone. You can share the music with your friend which is very cool. Somehow Bluetooth feature doesn't work when you watch videos. I guess the synchronization won't work well for the movies as the music on the headset and the earphone doesn't sync either. I guess this Bluetooth function is not quite perfect yet still very useful and cool for early adapters.
I really love this player. Highly recommend but if you like the Bluetooth feature, please wait little longer.

I have had terrible luck with the iPod Shuffle - 3 of them had to go back and be replaced under warranty, so when the 4th came I gave it to my son and bought the Samsung.
This is a beautiful little player, very tactile and sleek and easy to use. The buttons on the side are a little bit fiddly, but this is a tiny player after all and you get used to them soon enough. Navigation is a breeze and music is selected by artist, album, tracks, genres or playlists.
A problem occurred on the third day with the player hanging and I thought 'here we go again'. After calling Samsung, who were very helpful, I reset it, removed their software and use Windows Media Player, and so far all is fine and dandy. I also really like the fact that I don't have to use a bespoke software for loading music onto the device.
The sound quality is fantastic, and there are a load of eq options but I find 'normal' sounds the best to me.
The radio works great, but I don't have reason to use it. Battery life has also been impressive so far.
I haven't tried storing pictures on the Samsung so I cannot comment on that feature.
One small beef could be the time it takes for the player to start up even when it has just been switched off, which is not instanteneous like an iPod.
Overall I love this device, it is a joy to use, sounds great and you can use it straight out of the box with Media Player.

I have very frew complaints about this player. It has excellent audio and video playback quality, button placement is not a hassle at all and the interface is very friendly. One complaint is that to load video contect to the player, you have to use the software that came with it so it can convert it to the correct format. During playback, the quality is great (no skipping frames or lag or anything like that) and the size of the video file is relatively small (it's actually been cutting my video file size in half). So I can't complain too much, but it does take a little bit longer to transfer larger video files to the player than I'd like.
Audio playback is everything you've come to expect from a flash player like this. Customizable EQ during playback is very handy. My only complaint about it's audio playback actually doesn't have much to do with audio at all. It doesn't allow for a slide show to play as the music background. You can set a picture to be the backdrop for your audio 'Now Playing' screen, but the one you pick is the one for every song, artist, etc. I'd like to see in the future the ability to tag a picture to a certain artist or genre, and possible even a slide show instead of one picture. I mean the picture I might want as a background when I listen to Beethoven might not be the same as what I want when I listen to U2 (not that I listen to either, just making a point). But as far as I know, there is not a flash player out there that does have this function. And it's not even that big of a deal anyways because at least you can see the album art during playback.
Flash games. Yes there are flash games on here, only two, but you can add more. This isn't really something I would take too much advantage of, but if they took this feature out, I'd probably complain (Hey, at least I'm honest about it).
My only thing with the docking cable, is that it limits the ability to accesorize with the player. iPods have done well with theirs, but that iPod crap is little more than a bandwagon of fad followers. Ultimately, I'd like to see some way of docking this to a car stereo so that information could be displayed on the car stereo.
No WiFi. Microsoft got it all wrong with the WiFi in the Zune. I could really give less of a [expletive deleted] about 'the social' and sharing my music with anyone. What would have been the right way to do it is docking via WiFi (building is sharing features before docking features just sounds backwards to me). Maybe then you could even get a widget or two on there eh? It sounds good to me at least. WiFi being a newish thing for MP3 players, I'm not surprised and wasn't really looking for it in anything, but it would have been a nice feature.
I do fully recoment this to anyone looking for a decent flash player. The price isn't too bad and you definately get your money's worth.
Though they are barely noticable, this thing does sport very small rubber feat that keep the player from sliding around anywhere and also keeps the smooth and shiny back scratch free when places on rougher surfaces.

this player is the perfect companion on my workouts, with a belkin sports armband case and a pair of sony sport earphones this player takes the cake. the sound is also superb!! you have numerous equalizer setting and even 3-D settings that are amazing, it's like surround sound in your ears. and did i mention that they are customizable? sync is kinda slow though, but if you just plan on putting a bunch of songs on and not reloading them then it isn't to big of a pain.
everybody always compares this to the Ipod nano, and i find myself doing that too. it is definatly better looking than the nano. somebody just tell me it isn't, i dare you :P but the nano does have better syncing and slightly faster scrolling. although i am just as quick with mine by now. and the sound is definately better that the nanos. that for me puts it over the edge.
so if you want and awesome looking player that works great for workouts and running but doesn't sacrifice on sound then i reccomend this player. many people complain about a proccesor lag, but only the most impatiant people will even notice it, so if you are worried about it, don't be. unless your in love with gapless playback, it is no big deal. this is an awesome player all around and that is why it deserves a 9.
last week i just put the new firmware 1.50 us on my player. this switched it to a UMS device and now the transfer times are just about what you would expect from a USB 2.0 device. just make sure you refresh the library from the Samsung Music Studio and not the player, there is a sorting bug there that messes up the organization of your tracks. but it is no problem at all.

This is an awesome player with incredible potential; we'll see if it gets there. It's form factor is nearly miniscule (think new iPod nano with necessary size increase for a screen and controls). But its been a downhill slide since being prep'd for release in the US when they removed the Bluetooth connectivity. After its release we learned that its major downfall is its speed. The processor is a trifle slow, but I could live with this if it wasn't for the SO slow syncing. Filling the 4GB capacity takes between 30-45 minutes.
This is USB 2.0 people. These transfers shouldn't take more than 10 minutes. Also, creating a playlist causes an updated sync that can take 25 minutes or more depending on the size of the playlist. Also, if you're new to using Windows Media Player expect the first few syncs to take even longer since Windows will be downloading updated track information for a few days. I suggest importing your library and then letting your computer sit overnight with Media Player open, this will let it update all of your track information. The current firmware release is 1.27, so if there's a later one available I'd say this is a good player to try out.

I bought this player to replace the iPod nano I purchased a week earlier. I wasn't too thrilled when I found out how crappy and entrapping iTunes was, so I opted for an MP3 player instead.
At first glance, I was very pleased with the build quality. It is a very solid and well put together player. But after turning it on, OMG! It takes for ever to get started! I would say you have to wait at least 8-10 seconds for it to turn on. The iPod nano turns on instantly! The same thing goes when you skip to the next song track. It takes about 3-4 seconds to get to the next song. And, with it hooked up to my car stereo, I can also hear a high pitched whine between tracks, and the same whining sound while turning on.
I wouldn't say this is a horrible player, but there a definitely a few quirks samsung has yet to work out. I think if I were to do it all over again, I might take a closer look at the sandisk sanos player.

This is by far, the best MP3 player I've owned. The feature set found in this product is extremely rare, and the size is perfect for any pocket. I was never able to carry my player with me on the go because of size, but I take this one with me everywhere! It's so sleek and slim, and the video playback turns heads. I can't even tell you how many people have asked me about it since I've had it (about a year now). Finally, the screen is crystal clear and the intuitive user interface is second to none!

Easy To Use- Took it right out of the box and started to use it. Not problems.

Sometimes hard to scroll- It can be hard to scroll through tracks sometimes. Nothing big though.
