The good: H&R Block's updated tax interview is less wordy and easier to follow than in the past; includes free audit support for electronic filing; costs less than Intuit's TurboTax Premier.
The bad: TaxCut lacks weekend tech support; cannot import medical expenses from the included DeductionsPro; some investment tools could be better.
The bottom line: For do-it-yourself tax preparers, H&R Block TaxCut Premium 2006 is a solid buy. TaxCut is a breeze to learn and notably less expensive than archrival TurboTax Premier.

Lack of cust support / multi-state efile
by jzawacki on March 24, 2007
Pros: Easy to use

Summary: I've used TaxCut for years, but will be switching this year because TaxCut only allows efiling in one state (TurboTax allows three). Also, trying to contact TaxCut to ask about this issue was pretty much impossible. They have no weekend phone support (isn't that when most people do their taxes??), and the online customer support forms were very difficult to navigate.

Entered data wrong on the form
by HrtDoc on April 13, 2011
Pros: Had a good CNET review
Cons: Makes serious errors in transfers to forms. Online customer service chat was slow, admitted to trying to work with multiple customers at once, thus delaying responses by up to 5 minutes per line of chat, and did not know what they were talking about.
Summary: I have used TurboTax in the past but, due to the good CNET review, decided to try TaxCut. Going over the tax forms generated, TaxCut had made serious errors, particularly ...
Summary: I have used TurboTax in the past but, due to the good CNET review, decided to try TaxCut. Going over the tax forms generated, TaxCut had made serious errors, particularly in transferring data from the federal return to the states. I wound up having to directly edit the forms. In the end, it proved harder than just downloading the forms from the IRS and states and filling them out myself.

Poor knowledge of Colorado tax rules
by jamiet418 on April 7, 2007
Pros: Federal was OK

"I think there is a problem with the COLORADO Form 104. In the pension/Social Security calculation (Lines 7 & 8)when husband has pension and Social Security and spouse has only Social Security. Program allocates all S.S. to husband and won't allow S.S. for spouse" -

Summary: I have used both TurboTax and TaxCut and have found TaxCut to be superior. It is easier to use, cost less and generally comes up with the same numbers as Turbo. Also, because Turbo Tax is a Quicken product, it imports mainly from Quicken (intuit) products. TaxCut, on the other hand, imports from Quicken and Money. I truly believe that TaxCut is a better product at a better price.

Vary bad technical support
by er1138 on February 8, 2007

Summary: I had very bad time with the state programs (I need to file two states). After I installed the first state, each time I needed to open a new file, the program always asked to re-install again the state program.
I decided to uninstall and reinstall the federal program (very bad idea). When I tried to reinstall my original state program, I was directed to purchase again the same state!
I called to technical support several times and didn’t get a solution to my problem. Finally I had to reinstall the software on other computer. After I purchased the second state program, I called again to the company to get a backup CD. They told me to copy the whole directory to a cd y this cd should be my backup CD!
What if I need to reinstall the state programs? Purchase again? -
Mac OSX version is 2-years Outdated
by unknownart on February 27, 2007
Pros: Feh! A load of CRAP software for Mac users

Summary: Well, I got my disc in the mail, and I loaded it onto my Mac (OSX v. 10.4.8 (Tiger) and I clicked on the application,.. and it said that "TaxCut requires system support that comes with Safari version 1.3.2." Then it provided a link to update Safari to version 1.3.2.
Which is the stupidest thing in the world. Safari is now up to version 2.0.4 for MacOSX v. 10.3.9
AND the Safari required has been long updated about 2 years ago.... when the Mac OS was labeled "Panther." Holy crap! "Tiger" superseded "Panther" at least 2 years ago! TWO YEARS!
TaxCut didn't even support Mac's LAST YEAR!
And it didn't even check or mention or look for any other browser I may have such as the wonderful "FireFox" or the clunky "Opera."
What a moron bunch of backward software developers H&R Block hires..
And WE trust them with math to do our taxes?!...SHEESH!
