Works great... after some effort
by mvanzante on July 5, 2006
Pros: Can find them fairly cheap on eBay
Cons: Convoluted setup procedure, Locks-up due to overheating if case is not modified,

First, configuring the adapter is difficult:
1. Use a cross-over cable to connect the adapter to your PC
2. Change your computer's TCP/IP settings to use a static IP of 192.168.0.51 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0 (disregard gateway and DNS info)
3. Use a web browser to navigate to 192.168.0.35
4. Login with username "admin" and no password
5. Configure the adapter as necessary.
Secondly, this adapter overheats frequently which causes lock-ups and requires the unit to be powered off by unplugging it. After plugging it back in it will resume normal operation. I have found, however, that by removing the top of the case, the unit no longer overheats. In other words, improper ventilation is the source of this problem.
Removing the top cover is slightly difficult as it requires one to squeeze the sides of the unit in order to remove the darker-colored end caps (to remove the rear end cap, unplug the AC adapter and unscrew the antenna).
Once you're past the hurdles of setup and modifying the case, the unit works great! I don't think consumers shouldn't have to jump through so many hoops, but if you don't want to spend more money on a different product, this is how to make the DWL-G820 viable.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great device but you need a DLink only network for this to work
by Macajuel on March 10, 2006
Pros: small form factor, very good connection
Cons: buy a DLink router if you want it to work, tech support is a waste, bad user manual

Summary: All the reviews that you've read online about this thing being near impossible to link with your existing network is true. I was aware of this before I bought the thing but I went ahead anyway. One thing you'll notice is that all the guys that gave this product a good review, were the ones that already had DLink routers.
I tried for about a month to connect this device to my existing Linksys router. D-Link tech support was completly clueless and kept blaming both Linksys and the Playstation 2 for the problem. Seriously!! their solution was to call up Sony and Linksys and have them deal with it.
I evenutally had to go buy the DLink DI-624 router to replace the Linksys and like magic it started working. Now I have a solid, reliable connection from more than 50 feet away through 2 walls and a packed entertainment center.
Bottom line - if you really plan on getting this product working, you're going to need to get a DLink router.................it's just not going to work with anything else1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

DON'T BUY THIS!!

Summary: This chinsy little ethernet-to-wireless bridge is absolutely THE worst piece of equiment I have ever bought. Right out of the box I have had nothing but trouble with it. When trying to configure it with a static IP address (as recommended in the instructions) I lost all connection to it till I hit the "reset to factory default" button. It was out of sheer randomness that it actually connected to my router - which is also D-Link!
Once it was connected, it was very unreliable. With the router no more than 6' directly above it (through the ceiling) it constantly lost connection, and in order to get back on the network it needed to be power-cycled. Very annoying when you need to stop every half hour to reboot the dang thing!
After a while it did begin to work more reliably - for a few months. Now it has lost the ability to receive ANY signal!
The construction is not bad, but just barely mediocre. It is way too ligtweight - I was afraid to touch it for fear I might break the eggshell thin plastic. Not to mention trying to get it to stay where you put it - with the patch and power cords pulling on it's back there was a lot of drifting.
If you like a challenge and don't mind paying $80 for it, this is the one for you. Otherwise, there are plenty of other bridges out there. D-link even makes a much better one. Unfortunately, I will be much more wary of buying D-link products again. Don't let the flashy marketing fool you - look at the REAL ethernet bridges.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Sorry I wasted my $$$. great price, but will fail after a short time

Pros: Cannot really think of any at this point

Summary: I bought two of these to use to connect my HD DVR from directv to my network for media sharing. They were fairly easy to configure (with encryption). after about two weeks, the first one lost connection to the network. After re-configuring and re-setting, unable to share media over the network...I connected the other DWL-G820 (configured exactly the same) to that device, and it worked fine. Now (about two months later), I am having the exact same problem with the second DWL-G820. D-Link customer service was aweful, on both occasions telling me to deal with the retailer. Unfortunately, Tiger Direct.com has been less than helpful becaus I am now outside their 30 day return window. Will never buy another D-Link device--absolute garbage, I guess you get what you pay for (bought them for about $50.00 each.

Setup can be problematic, but works
by lensor on January 5, 2006
Pros: Appears to do what it should
Cons: Does not seem quick enough for VoIP devices

1. Do your setup one step at a time - verify each step before progressing to the next. Note that the device has 2 MAC addresses, one for the wireless bit, the other for the RJ45 connection.
2. When changing IP address on G820, close browser after "apply" and open a new window and try the new IP address - Leaving the same browser open and changing to new IP address seems to re-issue reboot command.
3. MAC address on box is for RJ45 connection, MAC address for Wireless connection must be discovered from WIFI signal -- this MAC address is needed if MAC filtering is used on WiFi network.
Note: VoIP from PC works well over G820, Grandstream GXP-2000 might require faster connection to network as it will not register over DWL-G820.
Setup and admin interface needs improvement (firmwre v1.0), hopefully firmware updates will improve this. -
Works Great
by BadNews72 on March 2, 2005
Pros: Used with my DI-624 was as fast as wired ethernet when copying large files

Summary: This product works great. The only thing I didn't like was that the setup wizard doesn't let you enter in an ASCII key for WEP. It only gives the option of using a HEX key. You can set up the ASCII key manually, however. Just a small annoyance really.

Easy install, works great with Xbox
by nealpolitan on March 1, 2005
Pros: small, easy to set-up (plug in and go!)

Summary: I am using this with the DI 624 router. The router and DWL G820 are only about 20 feet away from each other but are separated by two floors and one wall. After some fiddling with the antenna and placement of both the router upstairs and DWL G820 downstairs, I'm now consistently getting a signal strength of 80-90%. Finding that signal strength took some doing. You have to go into the browser based set up for the adapter from a pc on the network and keep hitting reload on the page that shows the signal strength. Not real handy, but I guess it does the job. Some scaled LEDs on the unit itself showing signal strength would've been nice, or maybe some software that shows a dynamic, real time signal strength...
Other than that, I've had no problems and it's been running non-stop for about 2 months. As far as Xbox live goes, I can see no perceivable difference between this and a hard wired connection to the router (or even directly to my modem). -
I'm returning it today
Pros: Familiar DLINK menus and config. Small footprint.
Cons: Unreliable - poor quality control. Runs Hot - faint burnt electronic smell. Unstable, the slightet config change breaks it.
