Very Simple to use but not Windows 98 Certified
by Windows98 on October 24, 2006

Summary: I haven't used McAfee before I use to have Norton 2000 OEM Version and I have been using alot of free Antivirus out there. Mcafee is one of the most simplest user interface of them all. It provides everything you need to do to scan. It helped picked up some viruses.
Provides real time protection but not perfect, scans your viruses and automatically updates.
The Down side however is, the features all need to be adjusted on the security center therby consuming more system resources then I would like.
McAfee Virus Scan 2006 is NOT Windows 98 Certified! I have a computer running on the Windows 98 OS and when I install McAfee everything seems fine. When it tells you that McAfee has updated and ask you to restart the computer restarts but now you are stuck on the Window loading screen. The computer has been reformated 4 times now and everytime McAfee updates the computer needs to be reformated. The hard drive was erased with Active Killdisk and partition with a bootdisk to FAT32 now I know there is nothing wrong with the hard drive. I am sure its McAfee because I didn't install anything new on it once just virus scanner and that incident happen. Then I tried installing stuff without Mcafee Scanner. Once I install the scanner when nothing seems to go wrong I am stuck on the Windows logo screen. -
Horrible Product

Summary: Came bundled with my Dell PC. I'm uninstalling this garbage. Everytime my PC starts it's asking to purchase spamkiller, or verify my antivirus subscription. This software is like a bad marriage. It never leaves you alone. Constant popups trying to get you to purchase something. This thing is practically spyware itself.

Rubust, effective & minimally invasive.
by crasher_dai on August 25, 2006
Pros: Not a resource hog, difficult to disable, reliable.
Cons: Install issues when it goes wrong, McAfee tries to "frighten" user into buying more (un-necesary) protection

Summary: We changed from reccomending and selling Norton to reccomending McAfee instead after the launch of Norton 2004 (rubbish!). The program is generally effective and robust and apart from when the install process goes wrong (normally result of a previous virus or symantec nightmare) generally trouble free. There is no product activation (I hate all activation software - it is just another weakness to be exploited) it IS possible to remove the product and re-install it to clear a crippled product if it occurs (yes - sometimes a sustained virus attack can dammage the protection program). The product will identify "PUP" items but as with other anti-spyware products McAfee struggle to keep up with the big media corporations who produce commercial marketing programs (ad/spyware). They are just like ALL spyware scanner producers also worried about being sued by an advertising product which is not illegal company suing them so hence the description "Potentially Unwanted Program".

Not a good product at all.

At first I thought it was a very good product, but then it started to lock my system up and I had to press the reset button each time and reboot the system.
I uninstalled it and installed it again, but that didn't help, it still locked the system up.
I must say that this is the poorest software McAfee's has released. I am very disappointed in this software.
My recommendation is for People to use AVG virus guard from Grisoft.com (which is very good) until McAfee can get the bugs worked out of their software. -
Horrible customer service

Summary: Bought and installed McAfee Virus Scan and Firewall Plus. Immediatly it completly messed up my internet connection and despite all the 3 hours of help I got from my internet provider they could not fix the problem. I called McAfee and they want me to pay per minute to talk to customer service to fix a problem that their program caused in the first place. They said I can get all the free help online but still the customer service rep and the supervisor could not get it that I could not get online and they refused to help me without paying. If it works as a virus program I have no idea, I erased it as soon as I could.

Summary: McAfee VirusScan 2006 was the first McAfee product I had ever purchased. And I will never purchase another! It's a good thing I got it free with rebates. It's been uninstalled from my computer for a long time and will stay that way. I had used Norton AV for years but heard McAfee was much better....what a joke! It was nothing but a disaster. It locked up my computer every day until I finally removed it and loaded the free version of AVG.

One of the best programs i have ever found!
by mstern on March 4, 2006
Pros: It found what i think was all of the problems
Cons: After it scans your computer i think i should tell you were the virus came from and how to pervent getting it again.
Summary: When I had Norton Anti Virus i found problems. It said i could not be removed. When i get McAfee it removed the like a (snap!).

decent antivirus product
by pcajustin on January 23, 2006

Summary: Overall McAfee forked out another decent AntiVirus program this year. Installation was simple and quick. The main feature added is the real-time spyware scanning which removes spyware/adware BEFORE installation (of course the on-demand scanner will remove these problems after installation as well after whatever caused installation to begin with).
They now have daily updates, which is good because now user's will be protected against new threats much sooner. It's also light on resources, and dosn't slow down my PC very much. Just the on-demand scanner is slow but I don't like using the computer when I'm scanning for things anyway.
My main complaints for this year is that they still have the same user-interface for all of the McAfee products including the Security Center and VirusScan. And the overall window size for some of the boxes or messages has increased for no apparent reason, as I noticed no new text. They also should integrate updates with the Security Center becuase logging in and out of their website to recieve manual updates is a pain in the neck when your in a hurry.
Overall I give it an 8/10 for it's good protection and light resource usage. -
Could Be Better...

Pros: Ease of use, Scans E-Mail in/out, Scans for 'potential' viruses

Summary: I have been using this for years and I have found that it has trouble detecting virus/spyware as it arrives on your computer (instead of 'after-the-fact' using a full system scan). I have 3 different virus scanners (not running at same time) and I have found that they are often inconsistant and not allways 100% accurate. Be safe.
