Summary: This is by FAR the WORST ever version of McAfee. Obviously it was rushed to market because it's FULL of bugs. Check the user forums. Also, it's a PIG on resources, and absolutely pathetic to uninstall. The installation took far too long, and the nagging is beyond stupid until you register.

Best anti-virus
by AuroraAlpha on February 12, 2006
Pros: finds the most viruses of any software
Cons: extremly slow, better have a computer that can run McAffe and your programs at once, or auto scan at night.

Summary: If you are ready to trade performence for power then McAffe is for you. It replaces Microsoft secrity center, so it controls your anti-virus, firewall, pricacy software, and anti-spyware. It also comes with some neat toys like bandwith tracker and logs all in and out traffic. It is however EXTREMLY SLOW. If you system cannot perform anti-virus and muli-task other things you want it can be a bad idea.
I have a pentium 2.8, 2GBs RAM, and a 7800GT.
Go much lower then 2.66Ghz P4, 1GB RAM, and 6600GT (or similar ATI) and I would expect problems!
Again. Powerful, but slow.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Check out Trend Micro Internet Security

McAfee ViruScan is not really a bad product. It does what it is supposed to do, scan, detect and clean viruses. The only problem is, it takes its own time doing it. It also uses up a lot of your computer resources.
In my opinion Trend Micro's Internet Security product (I'm using 2005 now), is probably as effective in scanning, detecting and cleaning viruses if not more than McAfee's. It also comes with E-mail, Spyware and network protection. It also scans much faster, and does not use up as much resources as McAfee or Norton products.
Trend Micro's updates are done much more regularly than McAfee or Norton, reducing the possibility of viral infection before the system is patched with the latest update. And that also means that you are downloading smaller (quicker to download over 56k) chunks of updates, rather than all 3MB worth of download in one go.
In summary, McAfee VirusScan does it's job, albeit slowly and taking heaps of system resources. I'd go with Trend Micro Internet Security.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Brings your PC to a screeching halt

Pros: Does prevent viruses

Summary: I came here specifically to save others from the experience I went through. I purchased a brand new PC from Dell which had McAfee preinstalled on it (30 day trial). In addition, I had purchased a 3-user pack of VirusScan 2006 to use after the trial period. I thought that all virus programs were the same (I am a prior Norton customer).
I was wrong.
Understand that a brand new PC should be FAST. This was a dual core 3GHz machine (Dimension 9150) with 1GB of RAM. It had no other commercial software installed other than what was included from Dell and the Firefox web browser.
I quickly found that browsing websites and sending email was a mind-numbingly painful experience. In fact the whole PC seemed incredibly sluggish. The endless delays and hang-ups while supposedly McAfee did it's "back ground magic" were insufferable. I mean it - this software will absolutely cause you to want to punch the computer screen.
Since my emails were hangin and the sluggishness seemed to center around "all things internet" I at once suspected McAfee.
As soon as I uninstalled the McAfee Security Center and VirusScan software it was like a veil had been lifted from my PC (no other change, mind you - just removing the software). It:
- booted faster
- sent emails instantly with no delays on incoming or outgoing
- loaded programs like Internet Explorer and Firefox almost instantaneously
- loaded web pages faster by a factor of 10
Folks - this is not a joke. Stay FAR FAR away from this software. Get ANYTHING ELSE. Anything at all - just do NOT put this software in your PC. And if you do, come back here afterwards and tell these other people that I was right so that they don't make the same mistake.
If you get this software for FREE throw it away. I bought a three-pack of licenses for my home PCs and I am going to give it to someone I dislike. I hope you understand the passion that I have about this product and the pain it caused me to make me want to disrupt my day and post this review. Good day.2 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

With an anti-virus product, of course, that's about as bad a bug as you can get.
In my case, the product disables itself every time I use Roxio's Drag-to-Disc.
The forums at McAfee are full of different instances of this same problem.2 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

VirusScan 11 - Use at your own peril!
by dsapadin on August 15, 2006
Pros: You can delete most of it fairly easily
Cons: Will decimate Windows

Installs itself into IE EXPLORER as a Website Advisor - slows MSIE to a crawl
Will load last - so you will always get a message from Windows telling you you are not protected, until McAfee finally loads.
Absolutely inexcusable from a company like McAfee. As a subscriber, I just got screwed out of 1/2 year of service, because I had to completely DELETE VirusScan 11 to regain control of my system. And yes, it upgraded itself to Ver. 11 by itself because I was dumb enough to trust McAfee.
Just try to get hold of customer service on the phone - go ahead, I dare ya. I finally did after managing to get hold of a number, and then a 2 hour wait. Was told the problem was unique to me...then the agent I spoke to tried MSCONFIG and, voila, had the same problem as me. So did everyone else in his office. No explanation, no fix, and no refund.
Ptuii!! So much for ever buying anything from McAfee ever again. Kinda makes you wonder if CNET really tests out these things before writing reviews or what....

So what Mcafee doesn't give you the firewall free anymore with Mcafee Virusscan? You're rating the antivirus, not the firewall which as one pointed out that Mcafee does have a firewall, but guess what it isn't free.
Mcafee is in the business to make money, what has cnet been giving away free lately?1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

McAfee Gets The Job Done

Summary: Though CNET keeps saying it doesn't, McAfee does have a firewall. Personal Firewall Plus has been on my computer for two years and it is realiable. Scanning for viruses may be tremendously slow, but McAfee gets the job done. I have tried other security products such as Zone Alarm, Spybot, Pest Control and had nothing but grief with them. Each messedup my computer and took dollars out of my pockets to rid me of them.
Slow yes, but McAfee gets the job done. CNET should recognize that, and quit saying McAfee doesn't have a firewall.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Memory hog, not so hot

Summary: I got this new Dell system with SecurityCenter installed, top of the line and everything. It's considerably slow, I don't know for sure why would anyone that does serious computing want a two-year subscription of this software. It hogs a lot of memory and cycles, makes your computing experience as sluggish as if you were using a 486 even if you've got a brand new Core 2 Duo. After only two weeks of living with it I dumped it and bought a two-year sub to NOD32. At least it's proven for me and it won't annoy me with a lot of messages and making my computer slow.
