McAfee vs Norton

Summary: I switched from Norton to McAfee after I had to start deactivating Norton to send or receive email. McAfee seems to be much more effective at eliminating viruses. Norton would sometimes find a virus but would be unable to delete it or quarantine it. From my view Norton has a lot of hype but it is a product that simply does not perform as advertised. My computer tech recommended McAfee after I told him my problems with Norton. I've yet to see any negatives with McAfees product.

Ignore Editor's Rating! Just look at troubles abound in the McAfee Support Forums!

The moment I finished the installation, the trouble began. My internet connection went down AND lost all control of my computer.
The hours spent with their support was fruitless. With my real work piling up, I couldn't wait any longer for a solution so I uninstalled it. Presto! Everything was fine again.
The culprit: mcproxy.exe. I found this is a McAfee process that runs in the background and uses 99% of my CPU. Feel free to see for yourselves at: http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/search.php?sid=9eeeeba1e9d22f4eb3e2754ced13031b
enter 'mcproxy.exe' under search and see all the other troubles people has had with this supposed reliable software.
For the ladies and gentleman of the jury I present you:
1. Installed=PC is a turtle and no internet.
2. Uninstalled=all systems go!
3. McAfee forums=read em' and weep.I thought it was just me, but >5000K views on this issue alone is something you can't ignore.
Look, avoid the headache and wasted time. Go look at other Anti-virus software.Updated
By the way, I'm requesting a refund for this evil, evil software.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

McAfee is doing its job by preventing 3 high-alert viruses from harming my system.

Summary: Terrible customer support with problems You get India, you cannot understand what they are saying, they cannot understand what you are asking, and then they try to sell you a service for $169 to clean your registery. Also, I called 6 times and they refused to connect me with someone from America. I finally called Dell (I pay extra for suppport from America) and they fixed my problem with McAfee anti virus for free.
Do not waste your money on McAfee because of their poor product and customer service. Get AVG for free from http://www.Cnet.com which is rated one of the best anti virus -
McAfee ridiculously overrated

Summary: I have run into a few major problems with McAfee and it has finally gotten me to the point of giving up on it. First - during install, McAfee is designed to not work with other major security vendor software (such as ZoneAlarm) and the install automatically fails if you have these other products in place. I am a big fan of and use the free version of ZoneAlarm and it took me about two days to figure out how to get it and McAfee running together. Second, McAfee is extremely CPU intensive - and the software creates about 20 different processes on your PC. So not an easy fix when there's a problem with the software. Third - I was running it on XP Pro and got a fatal error which just occurred a few days ago - the software outputs "please verify your subscription information" to "fix" the problem and when you try to do that it fails. I did an extensive search online and discovered that this is a common problem with a very complicated solution (basically doing a full reinstall of McAfee and all your other security software). I called customer support and they were useless in explaning this to me. I've said goodbye to McAfee - and in search of another software.

Summary: I found McAfee VirusScan 8 very useful, as it was easy on my systems even when I had relatively low configurations. It introduces Port Blocking, which is basically what Firewalls do, so I call it a self-administered Firewall.
You can lock the User Interface against other family members altering it or in case your computer gets attacked. You can set tasks to run in the night and the software will update automatically at 5pm every night.
Excellent, and beats the living D out of Norton. -

McAfee support is poor

Cons: If you get a problem, whoa. The online technical chat is quite quick, but the people at the other end are sometimes pretty poor. Last night I wasted two hours trying to get update working. The support failed to get it working, after several different at

Ruined by the new Security Center
Pros: It's stable.
Cons: Updating dat files are a pain. Must login to their website to download updates. This extra step wasn't necessary with the old VirusScans. Can't turn off update reminders. I can set updates to be manual but the reminder pop-ups can't be disabled. The remi

7.0 version is much better, this version's Security Center app is an extra piece of junk
Pros: Will protect your computer from viruses.
Cons: The clumsy interface, it's hard to use at first. The Security Center has to be run and I don't like it, it hogs extra system resources. Also, the big this is the update manager, if your on dial-up and dont' want it automatically checking for updates, you'
