Summary: I clicked, I followed the instructions, and My computer has been crap ever since. I've needed to run connection diagnostics about a hundred times in three weeks. Can't stay online more than 20-30 mins.without getting cut off. It updates constantly and requires 100% of My CPU. My computer is only 1 year old; 1.5 gig ram, 1.6 Ghtz. celeron proc.
Toshiba laptop. It should NOT have trouble running this software. I'll admit, the possibility exists that it's not all mcafee's fault, but all My problems stem from the moment I took this "upgrade", and experience tells Me, the thing You just changed must be the source. Helpful comments would be GREATLY apprieciated1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

BAD software
by MNGeek on January 31, 2007
Pros: When it works, you're protected
Cons: It's Bloatware with numerous things you don't need, but can't stop from running

Summary: Find a nice freeware AV package and dump this beast. After downloading an update and rebooting, it suddenly decided that I can't access my internet connection anymore, and that I needed all sorts of additional software installed without asking. At the same time it corrupted the install so the useless Security Center would no longer even start, and best of all it wouldn't even uninstall in Safe Mode!
McAfee's website has an uninstall tool when things die, but even that didn't work properly and I ended up formatting and re-installing my system. Until they get some real support, and allow you to install ONLY what you need, avoid this piece of.....stuff at all costs.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

It was a nightmare until I removed it.
by pikkukani2 on January 18, 2007
Pros: It can be removed or at least most of it.
Cons: It is all con one great big McAfee con, don't get fooled.

Summary: McAfee 2007 Yikes! (McAfee 2006 wasn't too bad.) I had a billion reminds from McAfee that my virus protection was out of date, I broke down and bought the McAfee 2007. To make a long story short, it kept telling me to re-install it every time I used the computer. Then after 5 hours over 2 days of trying installations every which way, I gave up and took that GARBAGE out of my poor machine. I have found other junk it left behind, hopefully I will be able to get all of the new virus called "McAfee" 2007 out of my computer. I have been violated.

Long time user switches to alternatives

Summary: I am a long time user of McAfee products. I switched from Norton way back becuase of it's intrusive and abudant registry entries and the affect it was having on my computer. McAfee was a logical alternative and I have been an advocate for others to use McAfee.
With the newest release (2007), I have had to pull it off my system due to massive slowdowns and as of yesterday, it actually caused my laptop to not startup properly. I am once again looking for good alternatives.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I bought the McAfee program after having trouble with another virus protection, hoping that a different program would help. I was never able to get it to load onto my computer. I received an error message saying, "Unable to setup windows frame, exiting..." I tried various ideas I found on the McAfee site, but found nothing helpful. I will be returing the McAfee VirusScan Plus 2007 where I bought it and will be going with something better. It may be a cheaper program, but you get what you pay for here.

It slows the system down
by plb-labrat on January 9, 2008
Pros: It works and is easy to configure
Cons: Other than detecting viruses it is pretty terrible, resource hog

On my PC boot time was consistently 2-3 minutes and I could never get below 750 megs of ram usage under XP (which is waaaay too much!).
I had been fiddling with settings for months trying to get this down and finally read these reviews here about how bad McAfee is. Well I uninstalled it and replaced it with Nod32. Now boot time is just a hair over 30 seconds and my ram usage is down to 450 megs which is great for a tablet PC.
How I discovered that McAfee was a problem with resources is that Outlook 2007 has been having a lot of problems lately and I finally tracked it down to McAfee. Support was useless at fixing the issue (Outlook 2007 would randomly stop responding for 2-3 minutes while McAfee scanned things). So did some research on the various ones leading to CNet and all the problems other have had. I also had my post deleted from McAfee's support site complaining about trying to get my problems fixed.
I still have 6 months left on my subscription, but lesson learned, don't bother with McAfee, they used to be pretty decent and cheap, but it such a poorly written program it really isn't even worth putting on your system. I use AVG free on one of my extra laptops and that is what I would recommend for a cheap solution before McAfee.
Since changing over I have also noticed a lot less hard disk thrashing. I thought this was due to windows desktop search, but it turns out that even on battery, McAfee likes to keep a lot of hard drive activity. Since dumping McAfee I can run basic operations on battery and the disk can sleep.
Bottom line, McAfee will keep viruses off your system, but the program is junk otherwise and will kill you system performance -
Reinstallation was horrendous

Summary: I recently reinstalled XP on my machine and was disappointed that I had to use McAfee's download manager to install something so crucial to my system. Then Security Center kept reporting that VirusScan was not installed properly and to install again. Repeat for 2 hours.
Finally I gave up and installed Trend Micro's PC-Cillin 07, which took about 15 minutes with no hitches. Disappointed. -
Not sufficiently effective when tested against another

Pros: None that we could ascertain though we did try
Cons: Poor all round in our opinion but the competition for this product is fierce!

Summary: We recently acquired four desktop computers and felt it necessary to load anti-virus ware. Because we had the time we ran McAfee Virus Scan Plus and then PC Doctor Anti-Virus. The McAfee failed to detect three infections which were discovered and disposed of by the PC Doctor Anti Virus. Needless to say the latter was one we went with and has proven flawless, inexpensive and the support offered by PCDoctor is excellent. We tried McAfee to see what they had to say and they never responded. Bad!

Advice From an IT Pro

Summary: Folks, the bottom line is this. Norton is the WORST internet security around and McAfee is a close second, for many reasons both obvious and some not so. I'm going to tell you all two things.
1st: each time I fix a system with the above AV packages on it I ALWAYS have to pull off viruses.
2nd: If you want GOOD AV protection here are the names: NOD32, AVG, AVAST, Antivir. The first is paid but is the BEST the latter three are freeware and while not as good as NOD32, each blow Norton and McAfee off the map with performance. That's it!
Happy computing
