The good: Norton AntiVirus 2007 is faster and lighter on system resources than previous versions; includes firewall-like protection, top-notch antispyware protection, and enterprise-level antirootkit technology.
The bad: Norton AntiVirus 2007 lacks antiphishing protection; although better than last year's, its performance results this year were mixed; the technical support documentation could be more thorough.
The bottom line: By rewriting much of the code, Symantec made Norton AntiVirus 2007 faster and lighter than its 2006 version, but a few glitches here and there keep us from granting it our Editors' Choice award.

Why Didn't Symantec Tell Me This Before I Bought It?
by dont39350 on September 19, 2006

Summary: For years I have been running Norton Antivirus, ZoneAlarm Pro, and Spy Sweeper with no problems. Each year when my Norton subscription comes up for renewal I upgrade to the most recent product instead of renewing my subscription. This year after buying the upgrade to Norton Antivirus 2007 the download went smoothly, but when I tried to install the upgrade the Norton install wizard tells me that Norton Antivirus 2007 is incompatible with ZoneAlarm Pro and Spy Sweeper and those programs will have to be uninstalled. There's no way in he** that I am giving up ZoneAlarm Pro and Spy Sweeper, so the Norton Antivirus 2007 upgrade would not install. If I did go ahead and uninstall ZoneAlarm Pro, that would leave me with no firewall (other than an impotent Windows firewall). Then I would have no choice but to buy a good firewall product that was compatible with Norton Antivirus 2007 such as...hmmm...Norton Firewall, right? Why didn't Norton reveal up front before my purchase that Norton Antivirus 2007 is not compatible with ZoneAlarm Pro or Spy Sweeper? This product is crap.

Consumer Fraud

Summary: Surely Norton knew that many of its customers would be using Spy Sweeper and Zone Alarm Pro when they bought Antivirus 2007 (otherwise we would have bought their full package, Internet Security, wouldn't we?). Nonethelss it hid the fact that it's new version of the same program that worked last with SS and ZA, didn't work with them anymore. Only after you forked over your dollars do you find that out. In any other business this is considered fraud. No reason not to consider it that here.

INCOMPATIBLE, STAY AWAY

Summary: Ridiculous. This product won't work with zone alarm and spy sweeper. While installing it, it had the nerve to ask me to uninstall those programs, which are the best firewall and best anti-spyware (in my opinion). Thus, to use Norton, you have to buy and install subpar firewall and spyware protection (Guess from whom?? From norton, of course). Incompatible? Guess what? I dump you Norton! Only pro: money back if not satisfied - I used it immediately after given the incompatibility message.

Don't purchase unless you're ready to spend hours in the installation process

Summary: I haven't had as much trouble with loading software since Windows 3.1. Using an older SONY VAIO running Windows XP Pro, my subscription to Norton AV 2003 expired. When renewing, I was offered an upgrade to Norton AV 2007 for the same amount as I would have paid for re-upping AV 2003. So, I sprang for it. Bad choice. Five hours later, exhausted and sweating bullets, having re-downloaded AV 2007 five times, attempted installation seven times (all of of which failed), attempted to uninstall more times than I was happy with, resorting to Symantec's AutoFix (which bellied up half way through - four different times!), I managed to limp back to AV 2003 which I had to install in Safe Mode with the mess I'd made of the operating system files. I'm now backing up the vital files I need with full intention of cleaning off the hard drive and starting over - the need for which I attribute to my misguided thinking that upgrading to AV 2007 would be a good thing. All said and done - beware Norton Antivirus 2007. Think I'll check out Kaspersky 6.

This product is useless!
by vash68 on December 24, 2006
Pros: Slows down your PC so you can play very old games easily
Cons: Misses viruses and spyware
Summary: I purchased my Dell laptop with Norton 2005 preinstalled, which seemed to be working OK against viruses, but had these problems: 1.slow performance and huge memory footprint
2.annoing ...Summary: I purchased my Dell laptop with Norton 2005 preinstalled, which seemed to be working OK against viruses, but had these problems: 1.slow performance and huge memory footprint
2.annoing firewall issue with VPN - I had to disable FW while using VPN - Symantec cust service was not helpfull with FW config.
3. very annoing Outlook email filter - it would place important emails from my usual clients into Junk folder regardless of rules . Fix - disabled filter.
So in Sept 2006 I decided to upgrade/update to 2007 version expecting some discount. Called customer service in India - what a bunch of ignorant folks - they couldnt explain the difference between update and upgrade, compatibility issues - what is compatibility?? And no discount.. So I ended up doing my research and finally getting 2007 upgrade. Upon installation it told me that
1) I have to remove PCTools Spyware Doctor because Norton is not compatible with it!
2) No email filter
3) UI is worse and the programm is even slower and takes more RAM.
On a positive note: you can istall it on 3(?) PCs, which is what I have at home and I was able to configure FW to work with my VPN.
2 days later I catch some 1.5 year old trojan
which causes IE to open constantly - Norton reports nothing. I call Symantec - they want to charge me $60 for removal of that trojan - and what is it that their software suppose to do?? Wasted 2 hours on the phone with india - no help there..
Disabled Norton and ran PCTools and it cleaned my PC. Enabled Norton. About 1 week later got more spyware. This time Norton recognised spyware (1 year old trojan), but was unable to remove it! Had to use PCTools again and it worked.
Later my friend's company's network (very large, carrying a LOT of peoples personal data) was compromised and exploited to the ridiculos levels - all PCs and servers were running Norton 2007 Corporate edition. Kaspersky came to resque there. Sounds like a law suit to me.
This was the last drop and I decided to get my money back - you have 60days for that.
Summary: I had been using Norton/Symantec products since 1992 in a professional env. They used to be good. But apparently Symantec went the way of outsourcing which boosted corporate profits and lowered product and customer service quality to junk level. I am not going to spend anymore of my hard earned american dollars on this third world product.5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: While it is one of the best anti-virus packages in my opinion, I have to say no more to Symantec. Doesn't work with Zone Alarm and everytime in the past 2-3 years I have had a problem with their software the only answer I could get from their 'tech support', when they could speak english, was uninstall and reinstall. What used to be a trusted, reliable, and stable piece of computer software has become nothing but a pain to maintain.

This product is actually a WORM itself -- UNBELIEVABLE!!
by HeatherCon on June 6, 2007
Pros: According to CNET reviewers, somehow it is actually providing effective anti-virus protection...
Cons: SO badly programmed that it actually becomes a debilitating worm itself! Customer Service is pure HE*% and the Cost is rather high for what you get

Summary: This product is SO badly programmed -- the SYMCLOGS folder (automatically loaded at the top C-drive level) actually becomes a worm, loading 1,000 files each day you have your computer on. I discovered this myself - after dozens of hours of fruitless emails and on-line conversations with Symantec's utterly useless Customer "Service" personnel. The Symclogs folder had grown to 1/3 of my hard disc and I couldn't understand why my capacity was being eaten up day-by-day. There was no end in sight, when finally I noticed during a defrag that this Symclog folder had -- no kidding -- 100,000 files in it and over 50,000 fragments! When I went into the folder and deleted everything it would let me (everything that wasn't active at the time), I gained 30% of hard drive capacity and got my processing speed back. Now I must daily perform this tedious task -- open the folder and delete each file it will let me. And it's still depositing around 1,000 files per day! This product has pushed me to change from PCs to Apple -- which I never thought I would do. But, I see no reason to go through this for the rest of my life...

I will never buy another Norton product after purchasing 2007 anti-virus!
by mikcin on January 5, 2007

Cons: After taking many days and ours to install, uninstall, etc. , incompatible with most everything on my computer.

Summary: Today I have received word that my computer is TRASH because of Norton's 2007 update. After taking almost 2 months to get it installed and uninstalled and removed and reinstalled, by numerous techs and numerous phone calls. It was like watching a dear friend's life ebbing away. Each day it did less and less. Now it stopped and won't even open Windows XP. Spending numerous hours on the phone, spent with techs who had to repeat what they said 3 times so that I could understand them. I cannot believe a company would produce a program that is suppose to help everyone and because it is not properly written and has glitches can mess up someone's computer who has important files and pictures saved. Sure I had backed up but not everything. Never will another Norton product be purchased my me or my family and I'll spread the word.

I got a "Configuration incomplete" message following installation.
20 hours of support later... and 20 hours of reinstalls, regedits, script reinstall, etc. same message...
Norton had NO CLUE what to do...
Chatted with about 10 different tech support people and got only one that seemed competent and that spoke english. Norton should rewrite this software and move the english support center to an english speaking country...3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.
