The good: Easy to install and easy on the eyes, the Nest Learning Thermostat learns your heating and cooling preferences over time, so you don't have to program it. Wi-Fi networking and tasteful apps let you control and monitor your Nest from afar. Saves money ... eventually.
The bad: At $250, the Nest is so very expensive, and large homes may need more than one.
The bottom line: The second generation of the energy-saving Nest Learning Thermostat puts this device even further ahead of the (nearly nonexistent) competition.

Perfect for Handicapped and All!

The first is my mother. Our thermostat access was limited to downstairs before the Nest and my mother is handicapped. Now with the help from Nest, my mother is able to change the temperature inside our home from her Iphone or Ipad. An added bonus, now I can too!
With the most recent Update Nest 2.0, my mother, father and I are able to see our habits and change according to the leaf informing us if we're saving energy. I haven't been able to determine if it's help us, but this wasn't he main reason we've purchased Nest.
I highly recommend this product to anyone! The only drawback, it's $250 before taxes. My family split the price up 3 ways, which helped greatly, I would recommend doing this if you're able, and willing to.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Cool (NPI) home gadget
by euspos on April 9, 2012
Pros: Simplicity. reporting capability and remote access.
Can turn down heat when not at home.
Coming FW updates?Cons: Will it really save any money?

For the rest of us. most homes heated with natural gas does heat up so quickly once the furnace is on.
We keep our house at 60F when we are not home, 56 when sleeping night, and have a (timed) thermostat turn up the heat for about 45 min in the morning, and at 6 PM. If we need heat other times during the day, we likely walk by the thermostat 100 times and it can be easily overridden (it does fall back automatically to its pre-programmed stage at next scheduled temp change).
If wanting to truly save energy/money (gas heated house), there is only one way; reduce the time the furnace is running.
Therefore, NEST is not saving me any money as it has increased the number of hours that our furnace runs, but YMMV.
(that can of course be achieved by a number of means, better insulation, capturing of all the waste heat from light bulbs, computers, cooking, etc).2 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: If you can get pass the price, I would recommend this product and say 'go for it'. My biggest concerns were installation and temp accuracy. I watched a youtube install video that walked me right through it. Took no more than 15-20 mins. WiFi configuration was too easy, created my account w/Nest online and I was done (just like that). Regarding accuracy,...I placed my disconnected (but still powered) t'stat adjacent to the Nest, and they both consistently read the same temperature each time. I was sure to test several times during the morning, day, evening, and nights. As someone else mentioned, it will take some time (minimal 1 year IMO) to establish historical data of value.
NOTE: I have a Netgear N150 router, and my Nest tends to disconnect periodically (while the device's battery recharges). Its not enough (in my mind) to be 'disruptive', but just know that it does happen. It usually reconnects seconds, if not, minutes within me opening the iOS app and I can live with that. Overall, a THOUSAND times better than what you're used to with your standard thermostat! -
Major technical flaw had to return unit. Power share!
by KFenton72 on July 11, 2012
Pros: Looks, WiFi, Apps, Reporting
Cons: Uses power from thermostat wires to recharge battery - could not start outside unit. This caused a capacitor to go out and $200 AC repair. The inside unit would cycle on and off then Nest would enter "Delay" mode. RETURNED

Summary: Because the Nest uses a rechargeable battery it will draw power from the low voltage thermostat wires. This causes problems when needing to kick start a relay on the outside unit. My outside unit would not start until the Nest was fully charged. This process would repeat every time I touched/used/read data on the Nest because once again the battery recharge would draw too much power from the thermostat wires.

Great device missing one key capability.
by lma67 on April 16, 2012
Pros: Ease of use, elegant design, wi-fi connected, remote adjustment, more.
Cons: It's already wi-fi connected & knows where I am via my smartphone. If only it could automatically fire up the heat/AC whenever it sensed I was on my way home so the A/C sould be set at 85F whilst away, and yet it would be down to 70F when I got home
Summary: Right now I need to log on with my phone and tell it to turn on the A/C in the above scenario every day - a nuisance I'm ...
Summary: Right now I need to log on with my phone and tell it to turn on the A/C in the above scenario every day - a nuisance I'm likely to forget much of the time. And I don't return home the same time every day (as other programmable thermostats assume). If they fix this (or add this feature, looked at another way), I'm ready to buy.

Great Eye Candy, buyer beware of this early techology.
by rodneygt3 on April 16, 2012
Pros: Very cool concept and easy to use interface. Great idea that you can control your temp via your Iphone or the internet.
Cons: Well, I am ususally an early adopter of technology and this seems like the early stages. I already installed 3 nest devices and all of them had issues. The main issue in my house was with the nest battery losing power.
Summary: If the nest does not receive at least 3.7 volts it disconnects from the internet and will eventually die. They don't tell you in the advertising you may ...
Summary: If the nest does not receive at least 3.7 volts it disconnects from the internet and will eventually die. They don't tell you in the advertising you may need an additional common wire because the nest needs to draw power from the wires which your existing wires don't have enough power. The 4 wires on the left side of the base (R,G,Y, W) might not be enough to power the unit.
The nest is also sensitive on how the wires are seated. I had the 4 wires connected and the nest actually shows a diagram of the connection, but it was not working properly. The unit was cooling instead of heading. I took the wires out again and repeated the setup process and it was finally working.
The nest folks are very knowledgable about the product and are very helpful with troubleshooting, but that was not enough for me to want to keep the device after 3 installations. The temp needs to work 100% of the time unless power is out. Many individuals will not be confortable working with electrical wires. Nest will say things like touch the Red wire (RH) to the (W1 or Y) wire to get heat. Basically this will manually turn on the heat.
My recommendation is to wait 6 months to a year to the product matures. I will be putting back my good programmable temp control.1 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Buyer Beware! Nice concept that doesn't work.
by bmalloy68 on December 15, 2012
Pros: remote access for those that travel a lot
nice reporting tool for energy use
easy to install
nice looking deviceCons: after 2 days battery low
after 2 more days battery low
after another day...shocking BATTERY LOW!!!!!
support happily says system is compatible without mention of potential battery issue which is CRITICAL!

Summary: Extra features - which is the wifi and the reason to buy this device SIMPLY DO NOT WORK WITH A 4 WIRE SYSTEM and you MUST HAVE A C WIRE. But they won't tell you that until AFTER you buy it of course which disgusts me to no end. When you KNOW the device can have a problem you don't state it is fully compatible when obviously that is simply not the case.
I had high hopes for this product but after having spent this kind of money and having the issue of having to take it off the wall every 2 days I will never waste my time or money with this.
Returning it I am so disgusted at this point. I travel a lot so am away often and this is worthless to me since the battery won't last more than two days.
I will go buy the Honeywell for half the price that I know will work fine and I won't have to take it off the wall every 2 days to manually charge the damn thing.
Pretty much purchased a $250 standard wall thermostat. Lucky me. to say I feel ripped off is an understatement at this point.0 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Not Ready for Primetime.
by stoppoliticalcalls on June 29, 2012
Pros: Beautiful design.
Cons: This is a beta product. Pure and simple. The system could not work well with my Apple Wi-Fi router. As a result the system lost power and I had to recharge it by connecting it to my computer.
Bottom line. This is not ready.Summary: If you value your marriage you will not trust your AC to a beta product. I really really wanted this to work.

I desperately wanted to love Nest, the "learning" thermostat, that has been receiving a great deal of positive tech press. I really really did.
I loved it. The look of it.
There it is. Beautiful, isn't it?
Looks can deceive.
But, I should have listened to my Wife. Honey, you were right. As you often are. I'm sorry. There, I said it.
But, I admit it. I'm a sucker for new technology and shiny new toys. Yeah, My family had a Mac in 1984 at my insistence.
So after reading about the Nest for the past few months I decided to buy one on Amazon.com and then get it installed by a professional AC guy.
My Wife warned me. Installing a new thermostat in Washington, DC in the summer when it is 100 plus degrees out may not be a good idea. What if it breaks down?
It did.
She was right. Honey, you were right.
BUYING TECHNOLOGY SHOULD NOT IMPACT YOUR MARRIAGE
Buy a TV and it doesn't work. So what. You buy another one. No harm, no foul.
Buy a thermostat in 100 degree weather and it doesn't work, you have a possible divorce on your hands.
WHAT HAPPENED
I'll not bore you with the details other than:
Three days ago I had my Nest professionally installed by a very nice man from Air Treatment Company of Vienna, VA.
Today I turned on my Laptop Nest.com account to find a massive question mark ? where I usually see the temperature.
I called tech support and this is what they told me (see below)
TECH SUPPORT
First, let me say that tech support was very nice, very professional, but really not very helpful.
WHAT THEY SAID
You may have an issue with your Apple Wi-Fi router. As a result you'll need to reconfigure your router to specific settings.
Please call Apple support to do that.
(DID I FORGET TO TELL YOU THAT THE TOP DESIGNERS AND ENGINEERS ARE EX APPLE EMPLOYEES. THEY HELPED WITH THE IPAD, ETC..)
Ok. Let me say that again.
The company founded by Apple employees told me to, "Please call Apple support."
THE COMPANY FOUNDED BY APPLE EMPLOYEES CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO MAKE THEIR PRODUCT WORK WITH APPLE WI-FI ROUTERS.
Seriously.
Really.
OMG.
LESSONS LEARNED:
Thermostats should not be impulse purchases. When they break down, a lot more than not being able to watch the latest "Mad Men" is at stake here.
Shiny new objects are fun, just not when they heat and cool your home. Screw up with that and you are toast.
Listen to your Wife. Really. That is just good advice for pretty much everything in life. Bonus there.
Don't buy beta products when your life depends on them working.
Again, a beta website for social networking or even a phone is OK. You can iterate and fix bugs. When you have a product that can determine if you can live or die (heat and AC are pretty critical to life) don't buy a beta product. Don't do it.
SO, WHAT DID I END UP DOING:
After disconnecting the Nest from the wall and charging it (it had lost power) I decided to return it and go back to the safe and tried and true Honeywell Thermostat that simply worked.
We will see. I've called my service guy to come and re-install my "old" thermostat and I've printed out my Amazon.com return labels.
I've asked Nest to re-imburse me for the install charges and the re-install charges.
So far, I've not received word that they will do that. I'll let you know.
UPDATE 6.29 11 AM ET
I've returned the Nest to Amazon.com via UPS.
I've had the Nest uninstalled by my local AC guy who is awesome!
I'm on hold with Nest support figuring out my request to be reimbursed for install costs ($240)
UPDATE at 12:50 PM ET
I've talked to the head supervisor of Customer Service and because I did not purchase the install via Nest, they are refusing to refund the costs of the install and the uninstall. Even though I got the name of the install company (Air Treatment Company in Vienna, VA - awesome fyi) via the Nest website and they are a certified installer.
I asked to speak to someone else at the company.
UPDATE at 1:15 PM ET
Nest did the right thing. Finally, I got a call from the head of Customer Service Operations himself and he apologized and agreed to refund to me the cost of both the install and the uninstall fees ($240 total).
