The good: Easy to install and easy on the eyes, the Nest Learning Thermostat learns your heating and cooling preferences over time, so you don't have to program it. Wi-Fi networking and tasteful apps let you control and monitor your Nest from afar. Saves money ... eventually.
The bad: At $250, the Nest is so very expensive, and large homes may need more than one.
The bottom line: The second generation of the energy-saving Nest Learning Thermostat puts this device even further ahead of the (nearly nonexistent) competition.

Sadly, I am in love with my thermostat.
by GuMeng on April 5, 2012
Pros: So easy to install and use. Gorgeous interface. I often stop to look at it just because it is there. Its like art on my wall. And it does a smashing job at heating and cooling. Oh, and yes, I have seen a savings in my energy bill already.
Cons: Price. I needed two for my house, so that's a whopping $500. If you can afford it, it is great. But it is a lot of money.

Summary: If you can afford it or you can look at the long term savings, then get it. It is sadly one of my most favorite gadgets in a gadget filled house. The iPhone/iPad App works great, too. The most fun you will ever have with a thermostat. If that doesn't sell you on it, well, yeah...

Great Gadget
by cspike2 on April 5, 2012
Pros: It looks great, has an intuitive interface, it's simple to set up and use, and WIFI built in means you can control it from the a computer or your smart phone.
Cons: Pricey, but it seemed comparable when I priced other thermostats with WIFI capability.

Summary: I saw the NEST thermostat mentioned on CNET last year and checked into it. They were sold out so I entered my email to be notified when they were available again. I got a notice that they were available and decided to take the plunge. The ability to control the temperature from our smart phones was one of the big selling points for me. You can be heading home, check and adjust the temperature in preparation for your arrival. The learning function is nice when you are on a regular schedule, but it still tries to learn even when you aren't. It is expensive, but when you check the price of other WIFI compatible thermostats, it's about right. And it can be modified, just like a smart phone, so new functionality and enhancements can be added in the future.

Pros: Superb design, self-learning, intuitive settings, easy operation, full remote control.
Cons: Kit should include anchors for dry-wall installation.

High End, High Quality thermostat!
by cawgijoe1 on April 19, 2012

Cons: Price. I debated the cost, but am happy that I bought it.

Summary: Much higher quality product than any of the other thermostats I've seen at Home Depot, Lowes, etc. Comes well packaged with easy to understand instructions. Very easy to install and set up. The Nest replaced a nice Honeywell 8500 touchscreen thermostat that I had for years. I set the Nest up with my current schedule but did leave learning on. So far it's working as advertised. My thermostat is located in an upstairs hallway so I disabled the Auto Away feature as we spend alot of time in the family room and kitchen area. If you are anywhere near Nest in your home, the Auto Away feature looks like it would work well. I'm hoping that Nest comes out with separate remote sensors that can be placed in areas that are frequented and will communicate with the thermostat so that I can use this feature in the future. This is a reallty cool device. Will it save me money? Maybe. I already used the capabilities of my last thermostat to it's fullest, so maybe not. But thats ok, I'm a gadget freak and this thing is way cool. My two concerns: WiFi can be hit or miss, that's why I have most of my devices hard wired to the router in my house. hard wiring is more robust. There are times it may go out, but the thermostat will keep working based on your programmed schedule till you connect back up. The other concern that several have mentioned here is charging the battery. My understanding is that the battery is charged when the system runs. If it's idle for a long time and needs to get juice, it will cycle your system to draw power. Some systems are sensitive and this may be a problem. If you have this issue, there are a couple of ways around this...you can remove the thermostat and charge it using the USB connector on the back. Not the most convenient, but an option. The other is to use a C wire if you have one, or if not, you may have a spare in the bundle in the wall that can be hooked up to the furnace and the Nest. If none are available, adding a C wire can be done, but could be a real pain for DIY. You may have to pay an HVAC technician for this. So far, enjoying the nest!

A well thought-out, designed thermostat
by ahypnoz1 on April 14, 2012
Pros: The Nest Wifi access service is Free!
Cons: Nest does not work with the more advanced air conditioners, Specifically, The two stage air conditioners that can switch from a 3 ton to 5 ton based on demand.
Nest does work for the two stage heating furnacesSummary: Nest did to thermostats what the iPhone did to smart phone market. Advance the whole technology 3-4 generations past anything else that is out there.
Free Wifi access, unlike other ...Summary: Nest did to thermostats what the iPhone did to smart phone market. Advance the whole technology 3-4 generations past anything else that is out there.
Free Wifi access, unlike other Wifi home gadgets that make you buy a subscription service, like the Link
$8.99 Monthly Subscription for Schlage LiNK locks. The Wifi access is free for the life of the product. Or the Craftsman Assure link that charges $20 a year. These old school companies do not get it, when you buy a device like the Nest, the Wifi service should be free.
For older people the Nest is very easy to read the large back lit numbers that turn on automatically with the proximity sensor as you approach the thermostat. The Nest then turns the back lit light automatically off when you walk away. If you go on vacation, It will detect if you are not around and automatically go into energy saving vacation mode all by itself.
I use my iPhone as an alarm clock so it is right by my bed at night. Every once in a while I will wake up in the middle of the night, either being too hot or cold. It is so marvelous that I can change the thermostat from my iphone so that I can go back to sleep. Zzzzzzzzz2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I've been happy with my Nest so far. The learning apabilities and remote programming are invaluable. The auto-away feature is great too. This thing works and looks excellent. They have updated it since I got it with new features and that is something I can't get with my old thermostat. I work every other Wednesday so a 2 week schudule option would be very helpful to me. I use the iPhone app all the time. It is nice to turn up the heat a few minutes before I head home from work. The time to temp just tells you how long it will take to heat up or cool down to the desired temp. I thought that information would be used to get to a certain temp by a pregrammed time. For example if I wanted the temp up when I get home from work at 8, it would start heating up at 7:30 or something to make it closer to the target when I arrive.

Best purchase I've made for my house in years
by daraldf on April 11, 2012
Pros: It was relatively easy to install. It's very easy to use. I can make settings changes from my iPhone. The most important thing is that it does save me money. I'm excited with the last update that could save me up to 30% on my cooling costs.
Cons: None really. It took a while to connect to my wireless router but once it did, everything went smoothly.
Summary: Like my pro's comments stated, I really like the Nest. It is learning our household routine and the light / motion sensor activates auto-away to save me money. I was ...
Summary: Like my pro's comments stated, I really like the Nest. It is learning our household routine and the light / motion sensor activates auto-away to save me money. I was on my way home from vacation last month and about 30 minutes from home I checked my Nest on my iPhone and realized that the house was hot because it was unseasonably warm and the A/C was off. I turned on the A/C from the phone and our house was comfortable when we arrived. They just updated the Nest last week with a new range setting to keep your house temp within a defined temperature range which is nice. I'm looking more forward to see how much my Nest saves me on my summer cooling bill. It's been so unseasonably warm here in Ky this winter that it's been hard to determine how much the Nest has saved.

This is one great product!
by Wombat-STL on April 6, 2012
Pros: What is interesting about this product is that it's early in its life cycle. This means is that because of its ability to be updated via a wireless network as it sits on your wall, this product will become more feature rich as it matures.
Cons: Yes, it isn't cheap but early adopters of technology normally bear the costs of new products.

Summary: While I have had intelligent thermostats before, this is the first one that really plays to the ease of installation and programming of a common person. Obviously you need to understand some technology concepts and will need to have Internet service and a wireless access point in your home. That in itself will take this product out of consideration to some individuals. In my case the energy savings will not be as great since I was one who fully used the setback features that were in my old thermostat. What I find though is that the the functionality is so much easier and faster to use. Combine that with a thermostat that can auto detect when you aren't in your home and make adjustments in the thermostat to save energy, and the ability to use an app on your Apple or Android phones or tablets makes this a winner in my circle.

Great PRoduct
by Zito17 on April 5, 2012
Pros: looks great, super easy to install, access from phone, ipad or computer is fantastic
Cons: Not really anything. would be nice if it was cheaper but I do think its worth the price. Any more expensive and I likely would not have gotten it. Sticks out from the wall a little more than I would like but still looks way better than old thermo.
Summary: this thing is great. Gets lots of compliments whenever anyone comes over to the house. I would definitely buy again
