  No, it's not 5.1 surround sound, but it works great!

  Pros: Very easy to connect, adds sound to all six speakers, adds great surround sound "effect". Eliminates "hum" from unconnected plugs!

  Cons: No cons; I did not expect it to turn stereo audio input into 5.1 surround sound.

  Summary: This adapter is great, for what it is designed. This adapter opens up the stereo audio signal from my daughter's TV and creates the output into the six channel Altec Lansing 5.1 computer speaker system I have connected to it. I now get audio from all six speakers, and the sub woofer sounds great. It allows use of these great speakers with a television set. The Band & Guitar Hero sound fantastic, as do movies on the TV set. It adds a dimension of sound well beyond simple external speakers.
  Previously, I had to connect the set using the headphone out jack, but that left unused plugs, that though covered, would still create the "hum". This connector is great for using compter 5.1 speakers with a television set. I'm so pleased that next I plan to upgrade the cable box to an HD version to enhance the signal for even more surround effect.
  Again, this connector cannot "create" true surround sound from a stereo audio signal, but it does a great job for what I needed it for!
