The good: The Denon AVR-1912 is the most full-featured AV receiver we've seen at this price, with built-in AirPlay for Apple's iOS products and six HDMI inputs. Its networking features also include DLNA compatibility and several streaming media services, such as Rhapsody and Pandora. And its sound quality is just a little better than the competing Pioneer VSX-1021-K.
The bad: The GUI can look pretty bad if your HDTV has mediocre standard-definition processing. Denon also doesn't offer a Wi-Fi dongle, so you'll need to use a workaround if you don't have Ethernet in your living room. And we would have preferred one of those six HDMI ports to be on the front panel.
The bottom line: The Denon AVR-1912 gets our Editors' Choice Award in the midrange AV receiver category, with built-in AirPlay, outstanding sound quality, and six HDMI inputs.

Denon AVR-1912 is a stellar machine
by rdesalvo on May 26, 2011
Pros: This unit far surpasses the surround it replaced! The sound and video are breath taking! Set up was a breeze, especially the speaker set up and calibration.
Cons: Absolutely none.

Summary: Can't believe the review rates this over the Pioneer VSX-1021-K. They both deserve as high a recommendation for differing reasons. The lack of WiFi, even if it's a dongle, would alone prevent most from choosing this over the Pioneer model -- to many it'll seem odd a receiver currently being released without WiFi could garner an editors choice classification...
With that much space, it's a huge disappointment both receivers mentioned here don't ship standard with WiFi inside.1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great when working. HDMI died within 6 months

Summary: When I firs set up the receiver everything was great. It sounded good and looked good. After a few months I noticed that while watching TV the screen would go black for a second or two every so often. I called Yamaha and they told me that I needed an HMDI booster because I was using a 15 foot cable. I told them I paid over a hundred dollars for my cable and they insisted I needed a HDMI booster. I called the cable company and had new wires ran to my house and still had the same problem. Eventually the TV would not show a picture at all. I called customer service and they walked me through some steps and determined that my HDMI port was bad. I took the unit back to the store to be fixed under warranty and a month later the store informed me that they could not fix the unit and offered me an exchange. When I went back, they no longer had the same model.
So for performance and reliability it did not last; however the warranty did get me my money back and I was able to upgrade to the next model AVR=1913. I have yet to unpack the new unit and I am thinking about exchanging it for a Yamaha.
I was very disappointed that I spent over five hundred dollars and it did not even last six months. -
Excellent receiver
by GAJ2 on January 31, 2012
Pros: Works as advertised, relatively easy to setup.
This $500 unit replaced my NAD T770 that I paid $1,700 for 10 or so years ago.
I was not expecting the sound to be better than the NAD but indeed it is.Cons: The manual is a bit obtuse.
Summary: The last Dennon receiver I bought 15 years ago is still going strong.
I expect this one to last just as long.Summary: The last Dennon receiver I bought 15 years ago is still going strong.

Great hardware, poor software.. Shame!
by vj_pavan on December 12, 2011
Pros: Great AVR (hardware)
Sound quality is excellent
Internet Radio works flawlesslyCons: Airplay drops out n also stops working completely
Remote App for iPad not available
Remote App for iPhone works only on Day 1, Crashes after
Zone 2 cant play digital sources independent of Zone 1Summary: Great hardware, software needs a lot of work.
If you take it thinking you will control the AVR flawlessly in either zones, this is NOT the right choice.
Wonder how ...Summary: Great hardware, software needs a lot of work.
Airplay is working flawlessly now with a Wireless N. router... Remote App is still out of order.! Hope Denon corrects it soon!
If you take it thinking you will control the AVR flawlessly in either zones, this is NOT the right choice.
Wonder how it won the CNET AVR of the Year, especially considering Cnet emphasised so much on Airplay and the Remote App.

Great AV Receiver: Love the features and sound quality
by sbconsulting09 on September 5, 2011

Automated speaker set up
V.Aux input on front is handy
USB port for iPod on front is very nice

Summary: This was a replacement for a much older (pre HDMI) Denon receiver. I had Monster cables strung all over the place behind my entertainment center with the previous unit. Now I have 1 HDMI cable from each device (Satellite box, Blue Ray and HD players) and one HDMI cable to my TV. Much cleaner configuration.
The automated speaker set up/balancing went very smoothly and I like the results. It took about 15 minutes to go through all the steps, so it wasn't that bad.
Although it was a bit confusing at first I was able to set up my Logitech universal remote to manage everything. I can now (with the press of a single button) select Blue Ray player, the (obsolete) HD player, my SAT box, or the Nintendo WII and all the setting are automatically switched. Very handy for my wife who gets frustrated with trying to manually configure things.
The only thing I couldn't figure out was how to use the RCA plugs on the back. I initially tried to connect the WII through one of those inputs but could not figure out how to have the system recognize them. So, I gave up and just connected it through the front, which works fine but is not as elegant or convenient. I unplug them when not in use just so they are not visible in front.
All in all I like the look and the operation of the unit. I had my previous Denon for 13 years, so I'm hoping this will have a similar life span. -
Great sound and media player ability
by maskinmoller on August 30, 2011
Pros: Sound - both music and movie
DLNA and Airplay
Play FLAC
Internet radio, tons of stations
Lots of connectionsCons: No support for Apple Lossless or high quality AAC

Summary: Don't understand posts regarding its poor mucis sound quality! I use it for stereo in a 2.1 setup. Used to have a Denon PMA 1500 amp, which is regarded high midrange and the 1912 actually gives me a better listening experience when fed with high quality digital input from my NAS server. Surely it hasn't got quite the same power as the PMA 1500, but enough for my setup. But it gives terrific clarity, probably due to the internal D/A converter instead of my "old" analog CD/AMP system.
Personally the lack of Wifi isn't an issue for me, as I find Wifi to restricted for my use when streaming HD movies anyway, but can I understand, if others find it a minus.
Also, as mentioned I really would like Apple Lossless support as I need both FLAC and Apple Lossless (or AAC) versions of the same CD if I wan't to be able to play it on both my iPhone and the Denon 1912.
This isn't a showstopper though and all in all I find it fantastic value for money and a very good all-round media receiver AND an excellent stereo AMP - specialty used in "direct" mode with all video components put to sleep to reduce noise. -
Soo many great features at a decent price
by jmmk on August 18, 2011
Pros: Great networking features & ability, great iPod integration, 2nd zone ability. Been looking for geer to access/play media on desktop in another room - AVR-1912 does the job best.
Cons: No wifi,(installed WD Powerline network device-problem solved) poor video upscaling, problems getting unit's remote to control other equipment.
Summary: Would highly recommend - most features at this price

Great Movie sound, horrible music quality!

Pros: GREAT sound on movie, perfect!
Cons: If you like listening to music, 1912 is NOT recommended. Very horrible on music quality. Subwoofer is very low.

Summary: I tried the audyssey many times and the bass/sub sound is very bad, don't know why. All the speaker setup combinations I tried but still the music and subwoofer quality is so bad. The editor who reviewed it focused on Apple Airplay. I hope they also comment on music quality. Again, movie sound is great. My 6 yrs old Sony is better overall. I still own the 1912 but most likely return it before first month ends. Perhaps try STRDH820.
