While Onkyo has already announced its main budget receiver for the year--the TX-SR606, which we reviewed last week--today Onkyo announced two new midrange AV receivers, the TX-SR706 and TX-SR806, which both offer several HDMI inputs, video upconversion, and THX certification. These receivers are sure to appeal to audiophiles on a budget, so let's check out their key features:
The Onkyo TX-SR706
Key features of the Onkyo TX-SR706:
- 7.1 channels, 100 watts per channel
- 4 HDMI 1.3 inputs
- Onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio
- 1080p upconversion for analog signals, using Faroudja DCDi Cinema video processing
- XM- and Sirius-ready
- Powered second zone
- THX Loudness Plus
- Currently available with a list price of $900
The Onkyo TX-SR806
Key step-up features of the Onkyo TX-SR806:
- 7.1 channels, 130 watts per channel
- 5 HDMI 1.3 inputs
- Onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio
- 1080i video upconversion over component video outputs
- THX Ultra2Plus certification
- Available in August with a list price of $1,100
The features on these receivers are pretty straightforward, although the THX features are worth discussing. THX Loudness Plus is a type of sound processing designed to give soundtracks more impact at low volume levels. We haven't had a chance to listen to THX Loudness Plus on a receiver yet, but we're betting audiophiles will prefer clean, unprocessed sound, and leave Loudness Plus turned off. The TX-SR806 is also THX Ultra2 Plus certified, which means it meets certain technical standards set by THX. While the certification isn't meaningless, it doesn't necessarily mean a receiver is going to sound good, and there are plenty of receivers that lack THX certification and perform just as well. In other words, it's better to use your ears instead of relying on THX certifications.
We're particularly interested to get the TX-SR706 in for review, after we were significantly disappointed by the TX-SR606's video processing. While the list price for the TX-SR706 is $900--way out of the "budget" price range--it's already available online for $800, and over the past few years, Onkyo receivers tend to be available for well below their list price after a few months. However, even a considerably cheaper TX-SR706 will have to compete with Sony's STR-DG920, which has many of the same features and costs $600.

Good sound, lots of connectivity, but video problems.
by imperito on November 14, 2008
Pros: The sound is great, driving my Aperion speakers. The video conversion is convenient, I can put everything on HDMI. Configuration isn't too difficult, nice to see a menu on the TV.
Cons: When displaying 1080p video from my Xbox 360, I see blue dots on the screen during dark scenes, even with the HDMI mode set to "Through". I don't think it is doing real pass through of the video. Doesn't happen on a 720p signal.
Summary: I like the sound, and the connectivity. The video on 720p is fine.
But the problem with 1080p video is very distracting, the whole screen would sparkle with blue dots ...Summary: I like the sound, and the connectivity. The video on 720p is fine.
But the problem with 1080p video is very distracting, the whole screen would sparkle with blue dots during fade to black transitions. I had to switch to using 720p.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Lots of features, seems well built, sounds warm / clean
by mohanman on September 25, 2008
Pros: Great sounding, 5 hdmi input switching, excellent setup menu, comes with mic to calibrate your room, feels well built. Better than HK 354 which I am returning tommorow because of tons of bugs. In and out HDMi picture, horrible sound with appletv.
Cons: Gets very hot, had some hdmi issues with appletv, but using hdmi video and optical audio seemed to have corrected that issue.
Summary: This is my first onkyo receiver, and I am sold so far. I have only had it for two days, but the sound/video quality is amazing, and it feels ...
Summary: This is my first onkyo receiver, and I am sold so far. I have only had it for two days, but the sound/video quality is amazing, and it feels really well built. Onkyo also comes with a 2 year warranty.. I guess they know they're stuff is good.
Correction on HDMI and appletv, it depends on the quality of your hdmi cable. Got a brand new one (expensive one), and it works much, much better. Awesome receiver.

Good product--Zone 2 accepts Analog Only
by sfboricua60 on January 18, 2009
Pros: 4 HDMI input, easy to use back panel; multiple inputs, like RI, XM, Sirius.
Cons: In my prior receiver, I had patio speakers connected to the receiver with jumper cables to a volume control. Pass through was fine. This receiver will not pass a digital signal to Zone 2, only analog. A crazy and a limitation I did not anticipate.
Summary: The problem with Zone 2 is huge. I would not have purchased this unit had I known of this limitation. Other issues with Zone 2. You must turn off Bi-Amp ...
Summary: The problem with Zone 2 is huge. I would not have purchased this unit had I known of this limitation. Other issues with Zone 2. You must turn off Bi-Amp speaker functionality. If you're using all 7.1 speakers, use of Zone 2 disables Surround Back speakers will Zone 2 in use.
I've also noticed synching problems, but the 706 has a synching functionality that allows you to delay audio in milliseconds, which works.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

More than enough bang for the buck
by sadak27 on November 27, 2008
Pros: Very customizable with plenty of inputs. LOTS OF POWER.
Cons: A little bit of a learning curve.
Summary: My receiver is driving an Axiom 7.1 system, and I am in awe. Clean, powerful, enriching sound on every input.

The unit is large and heavy and requires some air space, so keep that in mind. I highly recommend this unit for anyone with esoteric taste and a blue collar budget.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Incredible sound; great upconversion
by Vladimore on March 8, 2009
Pros: Great connectivity and superb sound. Video upconversion works flawlessly; I have not experienced any of the problems mentioned in other reviews.
Cons: None; since I picked this up at the Circuit City liquidation, the price was right as well.
Summary: I am using a BenQ W5000 1080p projector with a Comcast HD DVR, PS3, XBox360, and Wii all connected to the SR806. I have a single HDMI cable going from ...
Summary: I am using a BenQ W5000 1080p projector with a Comcast HD DVR, PS3, XBox360, and Wii all connected to the SR806. I have a single HDMI cable going from the receiver to the BenQ projector. I am using a 120" screen created with a Screen Goo kit. I have not experienced any problems with the Wii upconverting and no blue dots with the PS3 when playing games or blu-ray movies. No problems with the XBox360 either. I am using Definitive Technology speakers set up for 7.1 and the sound is incredibly life-like.

Great receiver with some serious problems
by BTB1969 on November 1, 2009
Pros: I think I've fixed the blue snow problem - I can't fit the solution here, so stop by my review on Amazon ("The Monster that Ate Your Rackspace") and check the Comments section. This is an excellent product.
Cons: The blue snow was a major problem but worse was Onkyo's attitude. I was told to get the unit serviced at the local authorized service center. When I found nothing but furious complaints about the local place, they really didn't seem to care.
Summary: This is an excellent receiver. I don't care for the way Onkyo has handled this blue snow issue (or the screen blanking out when you raise/lower the volume), ...
Summary: This is an excellent receiver. I don't care for the way Onkyo has handled this blue snow issue (or the screen blanking out when you raise/lower the volume), but as long as you find workarounds and you know your local repair center is trustworthy, you will have an excellent piece of equipment.

Summary: I have nothing but great things to say about this receiver. I have no dots on the screen, etc. I know of no other receiver that gives you this much power and all of the features at this price. If you think this was hard to set up, you have never owned a Denon! This is an incredible value.

If it breaks you are out of luck
by biffjr on August 6, 2009
Pros: Sounds good when it works
Cons: I have waited for 2 months for the parts to come in so Jersey Jims could fix my receiver. They are telling me another 1-2 months. I have nothing against Jersey Jims they have been great Just DO NOT BUY Onkyo!
Summary: If you want to wait forever on repairs just get an Onkyo. Who knows maybe you will be lucky enough to never need a repair done. Roll the Dice, Baby!

If that weren't enough, onboard Faroudja DCDi Cinema scales all standard definition sources to 1080p for HDMI output, or to 1080i for component video output. Endowed with the amplification power and dependability expected from an Onkyo A/V receiver, the TX-SR806 stands out as a natural choice for high performance home theater.
