Summary: What I wanted was a bargain priced HDMI AV receiver that had every feature in the world. Well, this is as close as I could get, and I'm very happy with this purchase.
If you are using all HDMI equipment like I am, setup will take you about 5 minutes.
Plug in the HDMI(s). plug one HDMI into your TV. Hook up your speakers. Turn on TV. Turn on receiver. Enjoy.
Great sound right out of the box! With a little tweaking it sounds awesome, especially for a $200 bedroom surround system. I have a more expensive setup in my living room and I gotta say this receiver sounds great in comparison.
For speakers I'm using some old (as in 15 years at least) Bose speakers, bookshelf size I guess. About 12" tall. The bigger speakers help with the bass and even with these old speakers it sounds like a movie theater in my room. I have a subwoofer hidden away too (you need a powered one) and wow!
My speakers are only rated at 50w so I haen't turned it up all the way, but this thing is loud enough to where I'm concerned my neighbor might hear it (house not apartment).
The only thing that is taking any time is figuring out which surround method to use, as there are a lot of presets to choose from. The menus are easy to get around once you figure out how they work. I actually like the lack of an on screen menu as I can adjust settings without obscuring the view. If the menu was more complex though an OSD would be better, but for the amount of available functions, I like it the way it is.
You can adjust treble and bass on the front speakers only, so there isn't much in the EQ department. I'm fine with that. You can adjust individual volumes though, and the speaker "size".
Some people are complaining that this system doesn't convert analog video to HDMI. you just won't get that at this price. And really, big deal? I have an analog signal hooked up and if I want to watch it, I simply change the input on my TV from HDMI to Video (as it's called on my set) and there's my picture. Really not that difficult. Or you can spend a few hundred more so you don't have to do that.
I am picky about my audio, though I'm not an audiophile. I am not new to surround systems, and this system sounds very good. Factor in the low price and it sounds incredible! You will not find anything better at this price.
