The good: Relatively inexpensive 7.1 AV receiver; three HDMI inputs; three component video inputs; automatic speaker calibration; Sirius-ready.
The bad: Subpar sound; no onscreen display; no onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.
The bottom line: Sony's STR-DH700 is an inexpensive 7.1 AV receiver, but its lackluster sound and dearth of features make it tough to recommend.

Summary: I don't what everyone is talking about... I love surround sound and and have been setting them up for years.. For the money this is a great box.. As long as you set up the distance, Large or Small speakers, how high you want each speaker.. everything comes out great.... and you don't need analog up conversion because the Pro Logic setting makes everything 7.1 setting anyway... The box sounds great in my home and I wow everyone... Now cracking, no clipping or nothing in the sound... take from me... any questions email me at ojbaybe@gmail.com
I meant to say no cracking or clipping at high volumes for me....

Summary: I bought this receiver for my home office. The office has a small Samsung TV, Verizon Set Top Box, JVC VCR/DVD, Sony CD-R, Sony USB Turntable, and Sony Bookshelf speakers. Setup was simple using included microphone. Obviously there wasn't much for it to detect since I only have a pair of speakers. I hooked up the STB to the Analog video connection and the DVD/VCR to one of the component video inputs. I then connected the monitor component video output to the TV. I was shocked to discover that there was no video up conversion (I know, I know, I should have read the CNET review first!). Fortunately for me, I connected the STB up to the VCR and used the component video output of the VCR to watch TV (the JVC I have is one of the few VCR/DVD combos that outputs all output thru its component video connections). I then connected the CD-R to the analog CD-R in/out connections. I connected the turntable to the TV input on the receiver since the receiver lacks a phono input (the turntable fortunately has a switch to turn phono equalization on or off). So, now on to video and audio quality. Video quality was adequate, although as stated, there is no up conversion as the video is merely a pass thru, even when using the HDMI out. The TV I?m using doesn?t have HDMI but just for the heck of it I temporarily connected a different TV with HDMI and I was surprised to realize that video is only pass thru for HDMI as well. As for the sound quality, the receiver did a decent job with CD and phono input even when pushed to high volume levels. But remember that my setup for this receiver is not for a home theater environment. Now, as for the remote, it is adequate but the buttons are small and the labels are confusing. So, to sum up, this receiver is barely adequate even for a small setup that I described ? I probably should have just bought the 2-channel DH100 and connected video directly to the TV. It may be OK for Sony TV owners with HDMI connected devices since it does have the Bravia sync feature (I use it on my bedroom system and it is very convenient). But I would definitely NOT recommend this receiver for my folks as a main or even secondary receiver.
