The good: The Yamaha RX-V473 has built-in networking functionality, including AirPlay and Internet radio. Its sound quality is solid with both music and movies, and it can be controlled with a smartphone app that's available for iOS and Android.
The bad: Nearly every competing receiver offers more HDMI inputs at this price level. The included remote is difficult to use, and the UI looks painfully dated.
The bottom line: The Yamaha RX-V473 is a serviceable 5.1 AV receiver, but given that it has only four HDMI inputs, competing models offer a better value.

Excellent Receiver!

Summary: I had an older Yamaha Receiver which this unit replaced. All I can say is wow - I did not know (unfortunately) what I was missing. If you have been on the fence to replace older analog equipment, I hope this helps you make the leap. Everything, and I mean everything, sounds better with this receiver. My surround system sounds like what I expected it to sound like but never quite experienced with the old setup. I am listening to music more with airplay and movies and TV really come alive and are immersive in sound.
Set up is somewhat complicated and took me a few hours to get it right. Here is what I learned setting it up. 1- you have to read the manual and you may have to read it more than once 2 - equipment does not necessarily talk well with each other - especially my media center PC. I turned off CEC control on my TV and that seemed to help (the TV and Receiver were duking it out so it seemed). 3 - The receiver likes newer HDMI cables. I had an older hdmi cable that did not work well (connected to that PC) but once I replaced it with Amazon basic cables (good value by the way), it did the trick. 3 - Watch the YPAO video. I looked at the settings that YPAO set up and they seemed "odd" but after I watched the YPAO video -( key learning - put the mic at ear level where you sit - I did this by placing the tripod on the sofa where I usually sit), the odd settings went away.
Airplay is great and Airplay is not limited to IOS products. It works well on both IOS and Android. Net radio works well too though bookmarking is a pain (Airplay, I have discovered, is much easier to use).
The Yamaha app makes it easier to control the receiver and makes up for the cruddy on screen display/remote.
In the grand scheme of things, this is something that you can keep for a long time.

Sound and features nice, HDMI configuration issues

Pros: Really nice sound, fairly straightforward configuration navigation, good network detection and connectivity, solid list of features for the price, pretty straightforward to use remote, solid construction

Summary: When run with a computer as AV source, severe limitations must be put on the TV screen geometry mode to get the computer desktop to be useable. At this late date in the development in all these devices, the receivers HDMI detection and configuration routine should be much more advanced. I used the receiver to replace an external HDMI switch box, but the switch box didn't have these problems and it's three years older than the receiver. Hopefully, Yamaha will fix the problem, it's not like computers with HDMI cards don't exist out there.
