The good: The Yamaha RX-V671 has excellent sound quality and six HDMI inputs, including a handy front-panel input. It has a solid collection of built-in streaming-music apps including Pandora, Rhapsody, and Sirius XM. And while the user interface isn't great compared with other home theater components, it's one of the best available on AV receivers.
The bad: There's no built-in AirPlay support. Also, the similar Onkyo TX-NR609 costs about $100 less, although it doesn't sound quite as good. No Wi-Fi dongle is available, either, although there are plenty of solid workarounds.
The bottom line: The Yamaha RX-V671 sounds excellent and supports several high-quality streaming-music services, but it lacks built-in AirPlay support.

Best in it's class - Zero problems

Summary: Like other reviewers, I looked at similar Onkyo, Denon and other AVRs and the number of negative reviews of those products, along with the positive reviews of the Yamaha RX-V671 drove me to buy this one - and I'm sure glad I did. With the price occaisionally dipping below five hundred, I'd say it's a real bargain, price/performance wise.
You'll notice that with the competitors in this price range there are too many complaints about difficult setup, difficult configuration, software problems, need for constant updating, heating, etc. The RX-V671 has none of those issues. I haven't even bothered to update the firmware and the unit works great, right out of the box!
True, it doesnt support Airplay, as is, but CNET made too much of this missing feature - Apple users are not the majority, yet. Otherwise, it should have beat the Denon 1912 in their 2011 ratings, and CNET almost admits this.
Clearly, on-screen graphic menuing is the wave of the future and Yahama is the leader. Today's HT setup can be complex and tedious, dealing with all the different standards for audio and video and all the possible tweaks and configurations. Before the Yamaha, I was behind, technically, with an old pro-logic setup receiver and had to spend some time reading and getting up to date on all audio and video standards and features. Even if you are an expert, you still have to apply that knowledge to set up a new HT system and the Yamaha makes that part much easier.
The intiutive, on-screen menuing makes configuration and on-the-fly adjustments relatively quick and easy. There's always room for improvement in menuing and I can't say it's perfect, but it's far better than anything currently in this price category. One reviewer wished that adjustments per port and input/output sources were grouped together, adjustable all in one place. I agree, but I'm whining because it takes a bit more menu surfing than it should. Keep in mind, whatever configuration annoyance the RX-V671 has, the competition is far worse!
For those who don't want to slog through the manual, I suggest you locate the following buttons on the remote: Onscreen, Option and Display. These three will open the onscreen menus and displays for all the adjustments and configurations. The Info button will tell you the current configuration from the front panel if your TV isn't on.
That said, the YPAO does a great job of automatically setting up the speaker adjustments and you really don't have to do much configuring. Set your BD player to bitstream HDMI output and the Yamaha will adjust accordingly. Once you are settled watching video, you'll probably like to try repeat pressing these buttons: Movie, Music, Sur. Decode, Straight and Pure Direct to see what you like of the various sound settings. That's it!
I've had the unit about 10 weeks and and have explored over half the features and probably will stop there, that's all I need, and it's probably all most HT users will care about using.

The best in its class

Summary: This is one of the worst Cnet reviews I have ever read. They over emphasise the need for Air Play, mention Apple about 12 times and do not even mention the fact that you can download the Yamaha AV Control widget for Google Android. Compare this Amp with the likes of the Pioneer SC-LX83 which has like for like features compared with the RXV671 but at four times the price and is considered "High End" while the Yamaha is considered Mid-Range? Not to mention the competition products have an Atari 2600 style GUI. I really can't believe this reviewer, Apple, Apple, Apple. This is without a doubt one of the best value amps around. If you can get better features for the same money in another brand please post and let me know.

If you want a great AV receiver for $500 you can simply not go wrong.8 out of 8 users found this user opinion helpful.

buy the previous model,the RX-V667
by sofast1 on July 29, 2011
Pros: excellent sound,great GUI
Cons: no pre-outs,only 1 sub out, limits any improvement in sound. Without these, it's an AVR,can't be used as a pre/pro later.

Summary: Who cares about Airplay? I'd rather have an AVR that can function as a pre/pro, so I can expand the system without replacing the AVR. The 667 is better and costs $150 less now. Airplay??? pass, rather have the pre-outs and sub outs. Rather spend my money on amps and subs than Steve Jobs.
If you want a mid-priced AVR to build a nice home theater around this is it! However, like most AVRs in this range, the amps are rated with only TWO channels driven. Using this AVR(and most others) in 5.1 or 7.1 will deliver more like 50 watts per channel. This could limit your speaker selection, especially when you have upgrade fever. To move up to some serious speakers will require serious power, meaning adding external high current amps. When(or if) you're ready to go to the next level, you'll have to leave the RX-V671 behind. You'll have to replace it with a more expensive AVR(with pre-outs) or a Pre/Pro. On the other hand, the RX-V667 will take you to that level and beyond, and cost you $150 less! Why pay more for planned obsolescence?

Summary: This reviewer is has to be smoking something. I listened to this Yamaha and the denon side by side, in the same room with the same speakers and the Yammy blew the Denon away! Much more punch and greater detail than the Denon. Im not saying that the Denon was bad, but it was much more of a flat sound (yes, I made sure that the settings were the same on both, too) than the yamaha.
You can't go wrong with either, but the Yammy has better sound to me. And all this hype with the Apple Airplay garbage...is just that, garbage. Who needs that stuff anyway? If you want to listen to tunes on your iPad, iPod, iPid, iPud or whatever, put some earbuds in and listen to it that way. Good quality recievers deserve good quality music, so dont shove crappy 128kbs music into it!3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: What an amazing movie sound. I heard many other systems. nothing sounds like a Yamaha. But of course my JBL studio series speakers may have something to do with the comparison. However, awesome and noticeable differences compared to my last Yamaha with was already amazing. Yamaha may not have Airplay but who cares. More than half of the people I know said they never heard of it or wouldn't buy a 'receiver' based on that reason. I agree.

Summary: The quality of this receiver has been noted by c|net and most user reviews, so I won't reiterate. But there is a huge oversight which makes me wonder if these products are really tested as thoroughly as they should be. If you're going to rant about how the RX-V671 does not support Airplay, then you should at the very least take time to mention its close alternative. This receiver CAN play streamed music from your iPhone (and I would imagine any newer iOS or Android device) over your network (LAN). It won't stream any of your apps like Spotify or Pandora, but WILL flawlessly play all of the music stored on your device via the Yamaha A/V controller app. I use it everyday and it works the same as an iPod. If you want to see for yourself, just go download the app (If you don't own the receiver you can still enter a "demo mode" that allows you to explore these features). Once in the app you'll notice two musical notes with a wi-fi logo in the upper right corner next to the the word "Main". Tap the logo and it will take you into your iPhone or similar device. Hit the list button (five horizontal lines) in the upper right corner and it will allow you to select any music or playlist stored on your device. So in reality the only major app you may be forced to live without is Spotify (since the RX-V671 has Pandora built in).
One other nice feature that the Yamaha has is separate speaker terminal sets for the surround back and zone 2 speakers. This allows you to utilize a 7.1 surround system that drops to 5.1 when zone 2 is activated. Other receivers, like Denon, have only one set of selectable speaker terminals making you choose between having 7.1 or a second zone (unless you want to rewire every time you'd like to switch from one to the other).1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
