While CNET did not review the Sony BDP-BX1, we did review the nearly identical Sony BDP-S350. The only significant differences between the two models are that the BDP-BX1 includes a 1.5-meter HDMI cable and its remote is backlit. Otherwise, the two models are functionality identical.

Superb blu-ray player.
by briloop on August 23, 2009
Pros: Very responsive. Intuitive. You don't have to point the remote directly at the set. Very good picture.
Cons: It doesn't stream Netflix.

Summary: I originally bought a BDP-BX1 at Sam's and loved it, but returned it because it didn't stream Netflix. I bought a Samsung BD-P1590 that streamed Netflix. I had to return it because it developed an unfixable software glitch. I bought the Sony BDP-BX2 at Sam's. I'm glad I did. The movie selection and quality thru Netflix streaming is limited. You don't really need it if you already have Netflix thru the mail. The Sony is superior to the Samsung in responsiveness, use of the remote, and stability of the operating system.

Excellent 1st time Blu-ray player
by Sadius on April 5, 2009
Pros: Stylish looks and ease of use are in addition to excellent High Definition picture and surround sound production. Internet connection was rapid and easy.
Cons: Does not have all audio codecs but most modern receivers will deal with this issue transparently.
Summary: Very few products bring as much pleasure and ease of use as does this Sony Blu-ray player. Only a multiplayer disk would be better then this little jewel.

Great First Blu-Ray Player
by greendh on January 2, 2009
Pros: Easy to set up, update, and play movies.
Standard DVD up-convert looks great, blu-ray looks even better.
Some have complained about the small USB port on the back. I have plugged the two thumb drives I have into the port with no troubles at all.Cons: None so far, and I'm pretty critical of the things I buy.
Summary: $239 at Costco is a decent price, it will only go lower from here but I didn't want to wait.
You really can't go wrong.Summary: $239 at Costco is a decent price, it will only go lower from here but I didn't want to wait.

Great value for a first Blu-ray player
by msecour on December 28, 2008
Pros: Easy set-up, HDMI cable included. Beautiful playback of Blu-ray movies. Excellent upconversion of most DVDs.
Cons: Trouble getting correct picture ration on some older widescreen DVDs not enhanced for 16:9.

Summary: This is the warehouse club version of the Sony BD-350. I first played Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (Blu-ray) and the picture is stunning. I then played an old Clint Eastwood movie "Eiger Sanction" which had some troublesome moire effects in one complex desert scene when played back on my Panasonic DVD player/DVD recorder. The Sony Blu-ray player eliminated nearly all of this troublesome effect. I was impressed. I have found that on some older DVDs that are widescreen but not enhanced for 16:9 that I could fill the screen properly without some distortion of the picture. This is not a major issue for me since I still have the Pansonic DVD player connected and can use it as well. I bought this for 189.00 from Costco and I think it is a tremendous value. If it is important to you to have one player that will play all of your DVDs, you may need to shop further.

A Sony BDP-350 with HDMI cable included.
by wdlee123 on December 27, 2008
Pros: Best value in a Tier-1 Blu-ray player.
Cons: Lack of audiophile formats such as SACD.

Summary: There is "no added value" to purchasing a Blu-Ray player for more than this unit providing - video is your focus and you own an HDMI ready TV. The Sony BDP-BX1 has most of the features people require and includes the HDMI cable which most retailers omit (up to a $50 value). Thru HDMI cable connection this unit has no real limitation. BD Live can be added thru plug in flash drive at rear of unit although BD Live is not a long term technology. We purchased Sony BX-1 at Costco as a Christmas gift to go with our Sony KDL-52W4100. It doesn't get much better than this short of the super high-end! We have seen both (sound by singer nyc). Be careful to not the the Emperors clothing analogy bite you! Good luck and happy viewing.

View feature provides "picture-in-picture" capability with select Bluray Disc titles - useful for viewing director or actor commentary while the movie plays. DVD Upscaling via HDMI gets the most out of your existing DVD collection by upscaling standard definition video to near HD quality. Precision Cinema HD upscale uses high bandwidth digital-to-analog conversion and processing to detect image changes at the pixel level, rather than at the level of whole scan lines. Additionally, separate algorithms are used to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are free from motion artifacts. Support for the international xvYCC color standard produces images with 1.8x the color space of the traditional RGB color standard, resulting in images with more natural and vivid color reproduction.
