The good: Excellent Blu-ray image quality; rips CDs directly to built-in 250GB hard drive; Netflix, Vudu, YouTube, Pandora, and CinemaNow streaming; built-in Wi-Fi; plays music, videos, and pictures off a connected USB drive or via network.
The bad: Does not support 3D Blu-ray; no quick-start mode, which makes it feel slower compared with some other players; media interface is overdesigned; must change the output mode to 1080p.
The bottom line: The LG BD590 deftly handles Blu-ray playback, CD ripping, and streaming media services like Netflix from a single box, but you'll have to pay for that simplicity.

Update: What a POS!!! After the latest online update the unit would do a complete power cycle over and over again, rendering it useless. LG took it back and repaired the unit but obviously didn't test it before returning it to me. I just now hooked it back up and every thing I tried to do with it caused it to shut down. DVD, shut down, network, shut down, apps, shut down.

I will not recommend this unit to anyone. Buyer beware!!4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Nice Blue-ray Player but poor Hard Disk Implementation.
by DigitalFilmWorker on June 12, 2010
Pros: Excellent Blue-ray player and streaming quality. Nice line up of Internet based media options (Vudu and NetFlix). Decent remote control. The wireless radio works well.
Cons: No way to play a movie purchased from Vudu and then downloaded to the hard drive directly from the player. Poor upscaling quality of regular DVD's.
Summary: The Good: Excellent BD picture and sound quality. The wireless networking works well and the rich network media offerings put this unit over the top when compared to other BD ...
Summary: The Good: Excellent BD picture and sound quality. The wireless networking works well and the rich network media offerings put this unit over the top when compared to other BD Players that do not offer services like Vudu. The wireless networking features were easy to setup and worked as advertised. Streaming 1080p is possible with this unit if you have adequate Internet bandwidth. The remote is useful and even provides buttons that can be programmed to operate other devices in your Home Theatre setup.
The Bad: The Hard Disk implementation is a disappointment and IMHO seriously limits the potential of this unit. I understand that consumers will use the HD functions of this unit for different reasons so my review focuses on my intended usage and subsequent testing so other users may find the HD functions perfectly acceptable.
I purchased Avatar from Vudu in 1080p (HDX) and downloaded it to my LG 590 hard drive. Once the download was complete I attempted to verify that the movie file was on the hard drive using the LG file browser and to my surprise the file did not show up in the file directory. At first I thought the download failed so I reconnected to Vudu and found that you have to play the movie from the Vudu. The quality was great with no streaming issues. As it turns out the file on the hard disk is hidden by design. The rub is that there is no way to play movies downloaded directly from the LG 590! If your internet connection is down you cannot play any of your downloaded movies. Say what?
I contacted LG support and was told that this was intentional by design. OK, I understand that there are copyright and piracy issues at play here but with a little thought and clever programming LG and Vudu could have figured out a way to empower folks who pay the entry price for this machine.
I did not try this test with NetFlix because they have no 1080p content available for download at this time so this may or may not be an issue with content purchased from NetFlix .
The ability to store photos on the hard disk is hampered by the poor Picture Viewer implementation. This may only be an issue with folks like me that have higher end Nikon or Cannon DSLR?s. The LG really has a problem with Color Space and size and I had to down sample and modify .jpeg files so that the 590 could display them correctly.
The Ugly: You cannot backup downloaded media content from your hard drive. If the hard disk goes belly up you are out of luck and the only option is to download/upload your content again. Once again, I understand the piracy issues involved but LG should develop and implement a backup function through the LG interface. I know of at least on competitor that markets a BD player with an internal hard drive and has a simple back up function so LG does not have any excuses for this omission in my book. This is yet another missing feature that precludes folks like me from investing in and building a 1080p media movie library.
Conclusion: A Good Blue-ray offering if you can live with the Bad and the Ugly. I communicated the issues I found to LG. Hopefully LG will provide a software update in the future. If you don?t need the advanced features you are going to love this unit.4 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Why no Amazon Video on Demand with LG's BD590?
by ggre on August 29, 2010
Pros: I like most of its features, especially access Netflix streaming video.
Cons: For some unknown reason (LG customer service won't say), the BD590 does not offer access to Amazon Video on Demand. This is a major drawback for a state-of-the-art Blu-ray player with networking!

Poor Quality

Summary: Maybe I just go a lemon. LG told me that I have to send it back to the factory in Alabama for repair. Mandatory labor charge of $69.00 upfront by money order only - no local repair. I purchased from Buy-Dig based on the recommendations from CNET. It worked fine for only 3 days. LG said they would send the shipping info and shipping tags to arrive in 1 or two business days. I waited a week and didn't receive anything. I called back and they said they will resend the shipping tags. Still waiting.

Impossible to use WiFi

Pros: Good quality image.
Cons: Impossible to set up the WiFi with home system. Will not see wireless network in any form. LG's help is useless.

Summary: Don't be fooled by the good ratings this unit gets from Consumer Reports and CNet: Unless you have some arcane knowledge of home networking or an unprotected network, don't bother with this player for its WIFi feature. Maybe it works while wired, but I can't do that in my place, so I definitely overpaid for what I got. It does produce a nice image, though.

This Bluray is an excellent choice. It works great!

Summary: I have owned this unit for about 6 months now. It was very easy to hook up, although some of the more advanced features such as media sharing took a little reading and trial and error to get it all working. The Blu-ray quality on my Panasonic HD 42" is excellent quality. To my surprize a couple extra apps were added during the firmware updates that come down. MLB and another music app have been added. The netflix access and playback is great. Even on wireless I get great quality streaming Video. Overall I would highly recommend this unit. I don't regret spending a little extra for it. I want to add that I called LG with some questions regarding the media sharing aspect of this unit. They were very willing to help me out and were very patient and professional. This alone is worth a little extra.

Best player i have ever owned!
by fomol_620 on September 3, 2010
Pros: Built in 250GB HDD so that you dont have to stream anything over the network any more. that is the main reason a HDD was put in the unit so you dont have to always hook up external HDD's or stream stuff. you just load it on the HDD and off you go!
Cons: No cons that i can think of. Maybe only that the menu is a bit on the slow side

Summary: Bottom line this unit is great! the NERO software that came with it is also awesome but unfortunately LG does not provide a Win 7 compatible version. Of course i dont blame LG because that is NERO's problem. i contacted LG to see if they had a Version of the Nero software that is compatible with Win 7, but they did not. which is fine i would not expect LG to support a product that is not theirs. If you go buy a car from a dealership and they throw in a free microwave and the microwave breaks, you would not contact the car dealership for support, DUH! you would contact the manufacturer of the microwave. why would LG provide support on a product that is not even theirs, that just doesn't make sense. so far LG has provided the best customer service i have ever experienced in my life. Seriously, just because of this awesome player and their amazing customer service i just donated $1,000 to LG. plus its not like i used Nero's software anyways. only a moron would use that software, especially when you can download free DLNA software off of the internet like TVersity!
after doing much research is see that LG has one of the industries highest rated customer service and it shows! i would assume that anyone out there that has issues with their customer service just plain doesnt know how customer service works1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Bad Customer Service
by jerryo43 on May 28, 2010
Pros: It would be a good machine if they supprted all the advertised features.
Cons: Netflix streaming does not work. Netflix and BG ping ponged me back and forth. Netflix claims it's a known bug that BG must work on. BG told me to take my machine of 3 hours to a repair shop. They ignore my emails.

I finally got a response to my email. It was a stock response which did not adress a single question I asked and in fact told me a fix to try in case the product was a TV. I called their customer service department for the 5th time today and they finally admitted it was a known bug.2 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.
