The good: Excellent Blu-ray image quality; Netflix, Vudu, YouTube, and Pandora media streaming, plus the expandable Samsung Apps platform; DLNA-compliant.
The bad: Sluggish operational speed; no built-in Wi-Fi; compatible Wi-Fi dongle is too expensive; last year's Samsung Blu-ray players had questionable reliability.
The bottom line: The BD-C5500's expandable Samsung Apps platform and DLNA compatibility make it stand out from other entry-level players, although it's one of the slower players we've tested.

Great simple B-Ray with streaming Netflix for $110
by eteune on January 3, 2011
Pros: Beautiful Blu Ray playback on my HD TV, great streaming netflix quality all for a very low price, no complaints
Cons: It's not a computer, so Netflix interface is not a computer interface of course! Duh! why would you complain about that?

Summary: If you want HD movies on your HDTV via blu ray discs or Netflix, I see no reason why to pay more, this one does it all for just over 100 dollars. I have it connected to my home network via ethernet cable. It will allow you to stream media from other drives, but have not set that up yet. Kids love all the disney movies and tons of old classics, I love all the thousands of other titles available. All the Netflix movies look outstanding via this Blu Ray player on my 47 inch HDTV in 1080p. I have read all the negative reviews and 90% are just silly and made by whiners who are cheap but expect to get high end functionality for nothing.

very happy
by richardar6 on December 30, 2010
Pros: Image quality was great/ streaming vudu awesome/ netflix was pretty good/ I set up everything and haven't even looked at the directions yet. The first thing it did when i turned it on was update itself- no problem
Cons: a tad bit sluggish loading, but coming from an older model that was painfully slow, it seems quick to me.
Summary: while some reviewers may have had problems, i haven't. It was easy to set up, provides great image quality (the most important thing to me on an HDTV), and ...

Slow response but works well
by speightg on November 28, 2010
Pros: The reviews I read made me worry, but I have all Samsung components so I added this unit. The video/audio match the PS3 it replaced. No problems with my hardwired network. Streams Netflix better than the PS3. Found my media server with no effort.
Cons: Still trying to discover what video formats it supports. Some of the listed file types don't work. It is very sluggish when changing applications. The anynet+ feature provides a very limited set of commands.

Summary: It was a very inexpensive Blue Ray player that has a nice selection of internet features for the price. The unit is sluggish to respond to commands, but it does do what it is advertised. The quality of the video has been excellent without any of the problems others describe online. Would like the anynet+ to pass a few more commands from the television to the player, but maybe in future versions. It is a attractive price for performance device

Plays blu-rays beautifully like a blu-ray player should
by rurallaw on June 17, 2010
Pros: Plays blu-ray beautifully, DLNA support (needs work); Streaming content
Cons: DLNA for wireless is different that from USB; Samsung Media Share software very limited option settings

Summary: It's a budget blu-ray, but plays blu-rays very well. Wireless dongle is expensive, but there are some much cheaper alternatives out there. (I already had a compatible USB N dongle that I bought for about $10. Just got lucky it had the same chip set.)
My only complaint is DLNA support varies based on input method. Media accessed via UBS has by far the most supported formats. Wireless streaming seems to be very, very picky on what it will accept. I've not transfered a lot of file types to DVD and tried, but I did notice that some files that worked when connected via USB drive would not play from a burned DVD. This could be a big hassle if you already have your media encoded.
Audio seems to be limited to stereo currently for streaming.
Samsung's PC software for streaming is very, very basic and not well documented.
I currently use Tversity for streaming but only after I manually added a profile for Samsung that I found on Tversity's fourms. Works much better, but not perfect.
Samsung has been doing firmware upgraded on a regular bases and fix some areas but may breaks something else (Audio in ac3 or aac).
I do love the Netflix, Vudo apps. Watching instantly is great.
Botton-line, its a great blu-ray player at a budget price with some very nice features (Netflix, Vude, Blockbuster, etc) with a few features that are still maturing. Ask yourself, what do you want your blu-ray player to do and how much are you willing to pay for each feature. This player meets my needs at a price I feel is very good. I believe it will be a better value as the other features improve.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Good image quality. Bad software. Slow to load.
by pixseal on March 17, 2010
Pros: It's a Blu-ray player and it can stream NetFlix movies over the internet.
Cons: You cannot control the aspect ratio of DVDs.
Changing anything in the settings menu requires that you leave whatever you're watching and start over when you're done with settings.Summary: I took it back for a refund. I'm still looking for a Blu-ray player.

Stupid purchase!
by jotranto on May 24, 2010
Pros: Relatively inexpensive, sleek design.
Cons: Setup almost impossible. This player is not as "Wireless LAN ready" as the packaging would lead you to believe. Model purchased at an American warehouse retailer has factory defaults with menus in Japanese characters.
Summary: Setup was a little quirky, and required an updated firmware -- the BluRay DVD player refused to play a BluRay DVD without it. Big minus.
To connect to Wireless LAN, ...Summary: Setup was a little quirky, and required an updated firmware -- the BluRay DVD player refused to play a BluRay DVD without it. Big minus.
To connect to Wireless LAN, you must purchase (separately) the Samsung wireless adapter. No other wireless LAN adapter will work. The Samsung adapter lists for $99.99, but is available for about $56 if you shop around. So add that cost if you expect wireless Internet access. Second big negative.
So I needed to update the firmware without a direct Internet connection -- this required a sneakernet solution.
Unfortunately, attempts to update the firmware via a USB stick proved futile, despite following Samsung's detailed instructions. Ended up burning the update to a CD, and installing the update by loading the CD into the player's tray.
We did get the player to work, and it does a fine job of playing Blu-Ray DVDs now. It only took about 2 hours to get it running, and a few trips to Samsung's web site.1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great entry level bluray player.....
by brianfergus on May 7, 2010
Pros: Quick loading for bluray discs.
Fast loading for moview files from my PC (i.e. 700mb divx file loads in seconds)
Easy setup for networking features.
Networking functionality (wired only) for audio, video, and pictures is very intuitive.Cons: None that I can tell yet.
A little slow to flip between pictures as they are viewing from my networked PC (but possibly due to file size or format, not sure yet), but only a minor hickup.Summary: I had been waiting for Samsung to work out some of the bugs from their first series of networkable bluray players, and after a year of waiting I am quite ...
Summary: I had been waiting for Samsung to work out some of the bugs from their first series of networkable bluray players, and after a year of waiting I am quite happy with this model. I can network from my Windows XP desktop in my basement with NO problems. I prefer wired over wireless, so I cannot comment on the performance of the latter - but I assume it will work fine, and any limitatinos would be more at the mercy of your home wireless hardware, and not of the bluray player. It was a VERY easy setup to get this going. Just shared out the folders I wanted, followed the software instructions (which were quite basic, even for novice users), and after it processed all my files (took all night to go through my 1TB hard dirve), I was ready to go.
I'm quite happy with it, and would reccommend it to ANY one looking for a networkable bluray player for all their home entertainment needs.1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great little player
by Whiterabbit1969 on June 17, 2012
Pros: Good pictures , sturdy remote, wireless connection via USB dongle or wired. Would recommend
Cons: None that I can think of
Summary: First time I got this connected, I was amazed how small it was compared to my Panasonic DVD player, connections are typical hdmi, audio left and right .
Since iam connected ...Summary: First time I got this connected, I was amazed how small it was compared to my Panasonic DVD player, connections are typical hdmi, audio left and right .
Since iam connected with hdmi to my Samsung 50 inch plasma using anynet which allows me to use either tv remote or bluray remote .
In the settings I changed some of the settings to my personnel settings and put in avatar and sat back to watch, pictures was vivid and crisp and I didn't see any edge bleeding or any juddering.
I stream from my iPad pictures and laptop with ease plus you can also connect a USB device to it and watch movies or music, plus you can down load Samsung apps as well as others for which country you are in, for example in uk Bbc iplayer is one that I use.
In all this is a good bluray player and had had no problems since I bought this in 2011 and since every thing is Samsung (tv bluray and soundbar with built in DVD player ) I like the idea that any of the these remotes works with all and no looking for different remotes.

WORST blu-ray player I've ever owned.
by tnjman on April 29, 2012
Pros: Not many. Plays blu-rays well; upconverts SD DVDs to pretty much HD quality. Low cost - bought on sale for less than $150. Out-of-the-box not bad.
Cons: Hangs on Internet TV app FOREVER, will NOT ever finish loading. Hangs on VUDU app; never finishes loading. This is after I updated to the latest firmware. Prior to firmware upgrade, it worked okay, but also updated my NetGear wireless WNCE2001 f/w.
