The good: Excellent Blu-ray image quality; Netflix, Vudu, YouTube, and Pandora media streaming, plus the expandable Samsung Apps platform; DLNA-compliant.
The bad: Sluggish operational speed; no built-in Wi-Fi; compatible Wi-Fi dongle is too expensive; last year's Samsung Blu-ray players had questionable reliability.
The bottom line: The BD-C5500's expandable Samsung Apps platform and DLNA compatibility make it stand out from other entry-level players, although it's one of the slower players we've tested.

Good build quality, poor LAN connection
by tbarnes120 on December 12, 2011
Pros: Solid build
Great user interface
Great picture quality & controls
Competitive price pointCons: Very slow start-up for streaming video options. Mine would not stay connected with my LAN connection. It dropped from time to time requiring a reset. I returned it for another one but had the same problem. I finally bought a Panasonic. Stable now.

Summary: I enjoyed my Samsung player except for the slowness of connecting to streaming options and the inability to maintain a LAN connection. I have multiple LAN connections and all are stable except for the BD player. Now that I replaced the Samsung for a Panasonic the connection is stable and much quicker. Should have bought a Panasonic first.

Unreliable as a wireless Internet device.
by iamj2b on October 3, 2011
Pros: Cheap - good value as a Blue Ray Player (only)
Cons: The Wireless Adapter WILL fail in less than a year, and costs about $100.00.
Samsung refuses to stand behind this "add-on supply" even if it fails in a few months. NO replacement.

Wasted days of service calls [reboot, updated firmware, router settings] only to discover that the faulty part was the Samsung USB adapter (add-on antenna for wireless connection via USB). Customer complaint agent suggested a return to the purchase location for a possible repair...!
I finally gave up and switched to the wired connection (at more unexpected expense and wiring hassle through the house). Seems to work fine for now, However, the promise of a wireless connection was indeed short-lived. If that's what you want (e.g. a Netflix box) forget it ! -
A good value at a great price.

Pros: Great connection with wireless devices and the internet. The AllShare feature works well in my home theater. I can send pictures, video and music from my PC via my wireless network to my home theater system.
Cons: It only has a single disc capacity.
Summary: Excellent addition to a home theater system.

Useless Cheap Junk

Summary: Does not connect to wi-fi without a slow (5-10 mins.) and very aggravating process. Does not stay connected, frequent stalls and rebuffers and "retrieving" errors interrupting netflix stream. Warranty and streaming gave out about same time. Oldschool menu control like old cellphone keyboards, slow and cumbersome. Apps are dull and not much variety... they also dont work especially well.
Stay away from this machine. It looks cool but it is one headache after another. -

OK for DVDs... awful for blu-rays.
by rmbasura on April 4, 2011
Pros: netflix app is definitely a plus. but most other blu ray players have netflix now.

Summary: it was ok for playing dvds. I didn't have a lot of blu ray movies so I didn't get to test out the blu ray features... now that Redbox is beginning to rent out blu ray movies, I've started renting blu ray films. Guess what? this bd-c5500 can only play 1 out of 5 blu-ray movies rented from Redbox. I started calling Redbox about their defective blu ray disc and was told to try them on another player. To my surprise the Philips blu ray player played all movies without any problems. DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM! I bought it because I had a 52" Samsung LCD. It was a big mistake pruchasing this product.

Avoid this model-Multiple issues

Summary: I finally got frustrated enough with this unit tonight to call tech support again. They said the unit is now out of warranty by several days so I must pay $50 dollars for them to look at there defective unit. Friend has same unit with identical problems. My 8 year old $20 dvd player from walmart has never had any playback issues. Be warned unit is attractive and has some nice options but fails miserably at basic playback.

Great Blu Ray picture, not so great USB performance
by sekander2 on March 3, 2011
Pros: Great blu ray picture. USB port will play MP4 and MKV files. Easy set up. Remote is easy to use.
Cons: Standard DVDs don't look all that great. USB port can not play VOB files.

I bought this player for Blu Ray (which it does very well) and USB (which is quite another matter). I was impressed in the store that I could play MKV and MP4 files, but, when I got it home, I found out that it will not play VOB files!! What's up with that. That's an older format than the other two. Also, I'm not so sure I like the performance on MP4 files. I have the Popcorn Hour file player and it plays all files perfectly. The Samsung USB port is something of an afterthought. I guess they don't think its too important so they cut some corners here. Aspect ratio from the USB port is also a problem, at times. There are some AVI files that will not go to full screen no matter how many tweaks you try with the remote and menus. Quite disappointing considering that my 3 year old Samsung Home Theater DVD unit will take all AVI and VOB files to full screen without a problem. And, the HTIB unit does a better job with standard DVDs, as well. (Both are HDMI).
I was hoping to make this Samsung Blu Ray my all-in-one problem solver but I guess its not to be. I will use it only for Blu Ray. Still, at $150 here in Thailand, that's not too bad.
