The good: Excellent Blu-ray image quality; Netflix, Vudu, YouTube, and Pandora media streaming, plus the expandable Samsung Apps platform; DLNA-compliant.
The bad: Sluggish operational speed; no built-in Wi-Fi; compatible Wi-Fi dongle is too expensive; last year's Samsung Blu-ray players had questionable reliability.
The bottom line: The BD-C5500's expandable Samsung Apps platform and DLNA compatibility make it stand out from other entry-level players, although it's one of the slower players we've tested.

If you buy from Samsung, you will regret it

Pros: You get about 60 days of good play before the unit starts having problems

Summary: You will notice that all the great user reviews for Samsung products are from those who just received the unit and are writing them after one weekend of viewing. You will rarely see a good review from someone who has owned the unit for an appreciable amount of time. That's because Samsung units are notorious of working great out of the box, but start having problems within a few months. I had a problem with my unit that required me to send it in for repair. With a 1 year warranty, I had nothing to worry about right? errrr, WRONG! Though it has a one year warranty, after 90 days from purchase you are required to pay labor services. Mine cost nearly half the cost of the unit brand new! So though mine was still under "warranty", I still had to pay 3 figures to get it fixed. On top of that, they sent back not in its original box with the original Styrofoam inserts. Instead it was sent in some old VCR, that's right I said VCR, box with foam inserts that didn't fit the blueray player. So not only did I lose the original box and fittings (which I like to keep because I move often and it helps in resale value), but they sent it back in a box in which it was allowed to rattle around in. Totally unprofessional.
Bottom Line, I will never buy anything from these hacks again!4 out of 6 users found this user opinion helpful.

Good machine for the price, esp. if you shop smart.
by durandal on March 24, 2010
Pros: Good image quality, good upconversion of DVD content, NetFlix support, WiFi-Ready (though I never plan to use it), slim form-factor.
Cons: Limited cross-control of non-Samsung television with the included remote, no on-board BD-Live storage, no built-in WiFi

Summary: For a sub $200 Blu-Ray player, it has quite nice styling and isn't intimidating for people to operate if they are not technically inclined. Loading times for Blu-Ray discs is a little slow for my tastes, but it's not excessive considering I've owned and experienced MUCH slower units. When connected via HDMI, the picture is very nice (I can't comment on the quality from the other ports, I did not try them). I also cannot comment on the Vudu service, or any other applications - as I didn't purchase the unit to use them - and haven't.

"Slow" does not begin . . . and then there's "Never"

Summary: I can't believe this is on the Cnet list of best players - mine malfunctions all the time. Samsung says to reset the player if there are problems, warning that you will lose all user defined settings. I think that makes it about the same as getting a new player, which I plan to do. Why invest more time on top of everything I've already done which has made no difference. The player often freezes completely, many times at the "FBI Warning", but when it is working it is so slow that you're never sure whether it will run or not. Unbelievably, it never remembers or holds the last place you were on the disc - it always starts over at the beginning so you get to go through all the warnings, credits, menu, etc. every time you turn it on. I'm very sorry I bought this on the Cnet recommendation - it is just junk. My very old Oppo has none of these problems when using the same discs.

It's okay.
by kuro on June 20, 2010
Pros: Good replacement for my old dvd player
Bluray performance is good
Remote works with my Samsung tv
Netflix streaming
Stream avchd videos taken with HD cameras, photos tooCons: Internet apps needs work
Input method is painful, text9 method like old cellphones
Samsung PC software needs work
No music during photo playback
Netflix sign in every time
Region free hack code doesn't workSummary: This is my first bluray player so I can't compare to other players but it seems okay.
The player uses old cellphone text9 method...bad motorola razor flashbacks anyone? ...Summary: This is my first bluray player so I can't compare to other players but it seems okay.
The player uses old cellphone text9 method...bad motorola razor flashbacks anyone? Hit number 1 once for letter a, hit twice for b, hit three times for c; number 2 for letter d, e, f, etc. This is a real pain when trying to use the search function in Youtube or Netflix.
You have to download the pc sharing software onto your pc so you can stream photos and videos to the player. The install is easy but to setup the share files takes a really long time (like hours for about 50gb of date.) I had a problem when I added more photos and videos to the pc. I could not get it to recognize the new files. The pc would go offline. I had to reinstall the software and reset everything again. Frustrating when the family was waiting to see the new videos we took yesterday.
Netflix streaming is good but everytime I start the app, it tells me a special code that I need to stand up, go to my computer, log in and enter this code so my player will stream. A little irritating. I wish it would just remember the code and log me in automatically. You have to create your playlist on your computer, cannot do it directly on screen with this player.
Photo streaming is nice but no background music or option to add any from your music collection.
The thing I liked most is being able to stream raw mts high definition avchd files taken with my HD camera (Sony hx5v.) No editing or converting necessary on the pc/mac. Just copy the video files to the pc and share that folder using the samsung software, search using the player and boom, beautiful 1080 hd videos on my big tv!
I ran a cat6 cable from my router, under my crawlspace, then up behind my entertainment center. My friend installed a wifi access point. Another friend moved the router to his entertainment center and installed a wifi card on his pc. Choose a method that works for you.
For those who watch foreign films, I found a region-free hack code on the internet but could NOT get it to work on the new firmware.
Bottom line: I bought my player on sale from a warehouse store $140. This player isn't the best nor the worst. i like it because it streams my HD movies. I would just choose a networked player brand that's the same as your tv so the remote works seemlessly.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great player no major issues.
by derek_wildstar on June 12, 2010
Pros: Easy setup with great features. The design is super slick with the touch sensitive buttons. great quality and fast load screens.
Cons: Must be connected to the internet to function properly. Front buttons maybe too sensitive. Limited apps.

Summary: My first impression out of the box was, wow this is tiny. I connected it to my main home theater system and was watching Alice in Wonderland in 10 minutes. I tried updating the firmware with a thumbdrive without success. A few days after getting this player I got it connected to my LAN and that?s when this player came to life. It updated automatically (after we watched Zombieland). It automatically saw my network storage device and plays all my music, movies and pictures. Pictures are a little slow but i have a lot of pictures so what do you expect. I connected with Netflix and watch Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, the quality was great and it only rebuffered once about 3/4 of the way thru the movie. The sound is great and I have to turn my receiver down every time i turn this on. Hopefully soon they will be adding some more apps like Opera and facebook. This is a great player that I would recommend to anyone. Anyone who says you have to be a techy to use this doesn't know how to read or is so technically inept that they probably have a hard time using a cell phone. So ok don't buy this player for grandma.

Outstanding. Love the slick design, and size.
by YankeeGreat on March 9, 2011
Pros: tons of other apps, that ARENT (Blockbuster) offered on any other device. Use of USB input and will network with my windows media player, Youtube, amazing. got rid of HBO,$ 6 less a month. and for 3 more a month u can have blockbustr and netflix!
Cons: Very light, hard to keep in place.

Absolute piece of junk. Do not buy. Bad Factory Run?
by mrjumbomortgage on January 21, 2011
Pros: Apps work fairly well. Has to get a connection and download all of them when you connect it. Not installed in the storage out of the factory. Watched Netflix fine. UI Menu system and speed between sections of the OS need major work. Faster processor?
Cons: I'm very tech savvy. Upgraded to latest 1020.1 after an elaborate on/off, wait 5 sec unplug, restart dance that then allowed for it to upgrade. It won't play any discs at ALL. Unreal. No DVD/Blurays of any kind. Piece of junk. Returning to Costco.
Summary: Piece of junk. They must have had a very bad run of these. If you visit other forums many people are having very weird software and drive problems. Worst consumer ...

It shows Blu-ray disks fine, but others things aren't
by Doctor Who on January 16, 2011
Pros: I like the display of Blu-ray movies. The addtional functions are nice, when they work.
Cons: Recently, when trying to watch what Samsung calls InternetTV, it starts a download and install of something. I don't know what, but it takes WAY TOO LONG TO DO! Also, sometimes if you pause a movie (DVD or Blu-ray), it doesn't resume.
Summary: I've never own a Blu-ray player before, but I have to say that I am disappointed in this unit. The tendency to not resume a movie (DVD or Blu-ray) ...
Summary: I've never own a Blu-ray player before, but I have to say that I am disappointed in this unit. The tendency to not resume a movie (DVD or Blu-ray) if you've had it paused for a while, makes me wonder what's wrong with it. Also, every time I try to run any of the InternetTV functions (like watching Netflix or anything else like that), it starts a very lengthy download and installation process, which never seems to end. I no longer bother to watch anything Internet related on this, but instead use my Roku, which gives me reliable service. Bottom line, I don't recommend you get this, if you want to watch anything via the Web. It's fine, if you want to just use it as a DVD/Blu-ray player, so long as you don't pause whatever you're watching for very long.
As time goes by, I am less pleased with this Blu-ray player.

Good Blu Ray, no Hulu Plus
by Rheebus on January 15, 2011
Pros: So far the Blue Ray portion of this product is working well. The load time is pretty quick compared to my parents' Blu Ray. Netflix and Pandora functionality are great!
Cons: No Hulu Plus app...yet. Froze while playing DVD.
Summary: Not sure what the hold up on the Hulu plus app is here. Samsung has an app, its just not available for this player (yet, hopefully). This is doubly frustrating ...
Summary: Not sure what the hold up on the Hulu plus app is here. Samsung has an app, its just not available for this player (yet, hopefully). This is doubly frustrating because the Hulu plus app is advertised on the banner adds for apps that scroll past when using the app finder program on the player. Lastly, the player froze while playing the Neo/Morpheus fight scene in the original Matrix DVD. I hope this isn't a consistent problem, but I won't be using the player to play DVDs much, so even if it is, it won't affect me.

Good Blu-Ray player/streamer
by zapatasghost on January 8, 2011
Pros: Excellent Bluray performance - albeit slow loading at times. Great picture and sound. Streaming capabilities are Ok. Netflix works and the new version of the app is much improved - although no 5.1 sound via stream. Easy-to-use no-nonsense remote.
Cons: Streaming features such as the Youtube app sucks (very limited search function etc.). No Dolby surround for Netflix streaming. Touch-sensative controls on the face of the player are a bit too sensitive. Regular DVD's sometimes do not load correctly.
Summary: Over-all good player for the money. Doesn't seem to be worth the hassle if you don't have a wired connection (which I do) for streaming. DVD's sometimes ...
Summary: Over-all good player for the money. Doesn't seem to be worth the hassle if you don't have a wired connection (which I do) for streaming. DVD's sometimes don't load correctly where you get stuck either on a blank screen or on the ratings screen requiring either shutting down the power or reloading the disk.
Now that I've owned this player for some months now - I now realize that although the BluRay picture is good - it is terrible at reading or starting up regular (non-Blu-ray) DVD's - which is the vast majority of use for this player for me. I don't see an improvement in the picture over my old regular DVD player for non-Bluray DVD's on this player. Getting a regular DVD to read correctly almost always requires a frustrating series of ejecting and closing to allow the player to reread the DVD. It does not have the feature that reads where you left off. Although the Netflix "app" was much improved some months ago (it initially was terrible) - loading a streamed Netflix movie is excruciatingly slow even though it's connected via ethernet. I actually initially thought that the long wait for streaming movies to load was normal until I saw an AppleTV almost instantly load a Netflix movie over a wireless network! Overall, this player has put a sour taste in my mouth for Samsung products.
Updated on Jul 28, 2011
Updated on Jul 28, 2011Oh yeah! When you stream Netflix you get no sound - requiring you to exit the Netflix app completely to access the audio settings then the long wait - again - to reload the Netflix movie.
If I could I would give maybe 2 stars versus my initial 4 stars. The player was inexpensive - but not free!!! I still expect more.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
