A very basic Blu Ray player, the BD-C5500 with 3D
by Tacforce7 on November 28, 2010
Pros: Very low priced player and packed with features
Clear and crisp colors
Remote set up to work with Samsung TV (great if you're getting the packaged deal)
Full component width and a low profile
Very good user manual and Quick Setup guideCons: v e r y s l o w
Basic minimum connections
Horrible audio buffer problem
Four buttons on player itself: Play/Pause, Eject, Stop and Power (no fast forward or next)
Poor remote designSummary: If you're simply going to plug this into your TV with little concerns for anything else, it's fine. If you actually expect any performance out of this unit, ...
Summary: If you're simply going to plug this into your TV with little concerns for anything else, it's fine. If you actually expect any performance out of this unit, think again. Using the analog RGBs, composite video, stereo audio cables or the HDMI otuputs directly to your TV and it works as it should.
This player does support DTS and Dolby Digital Decoding up to 7.1 channels but that is where the problem starts. There is a buffer issue so if you are connecting this via HDMI or Optical out to a A/V receiver, there is a distict lag with the audio to video- think 70s Kung Fu movie. Shame on me for trying to listen to Blu-rays in surround sound. There is only left and right audio outputs on the back of the player so if you want 5.1 or 7.1 discrete outputs, you need to upgrade to a higher model.
The C5500/C5900 does support streaming audio and video such as Youtube, Pandora and NetFlix but but this unit does not come with a 1GB buffer that is nearly essential for these sort of applications. It cannot even handle the task of playing a disc internally so hooking it up to my unreliable but 10Mbps ISP's broadband connection was out of the question.
Any and all apps and/or discs (Blu, DVD, CDs, picture CDs, etc) take a while to load up once inserted and in certain instances, will not play burned DVDs. So if you're wish to watch your or a friend's vacation, baby or wedding videos, it's hit but mostly miss with this player. Well, that's one way to get out of watching them.
The big green "Menu" button in the middle of the remote is for the Player's menu NOT the disc menu and will stop the disc from playing without resuming the previous point. It will resume a movie that was stopped if the power was turned off but but if you are playing a DVD that is being upscaled, the picture is completely pixelated upon resumption but the audio remains clear. Nothing short of ejecting and restarting the movie will correct this. The same goes for the Tools, Info, Return and Exit buttons that flank the cursor/directional buttons. If you have big fingers, popcorn hands, clumsy, are in the dark or just grab the remote wrong, you risk interrupting the movie and having to restart it. This nearly always happens when going through the bonus features or using BD Live and the Blu Ray comes to a screeching need-to-start-from-the-beginning-so-watch-all-the-previews-again stop.
This is an out of the box, only hooked up to a TV, hit play and finish the movie sort of unit. If this is all you need, then this unit should serve you well. If you are trying to make the most of a Blu Ray disc, with all those bonus features that are included, listen to movies in surround or don't want any lag when utilizing the Samsung apps, then you need to look elswhere.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Sub-par BD Player
by 1080p54 on May 14, 2011
Pros: When it works, it results in errant dropped frames.
Cons: BDs don't boot correctly 30% of the time (black screen). Netflix fails to stream 50% of the time after selecting a movie (buffer stops at 80%). Constantly having to hard-reboot the BD5500C. Replaced twice. Avoid.

decent but requires additional proprietary equipment
by purplemartini on January 26, 2011
Pros: 3d
pretty good picture quality
works in conjunction with a Samsung TV (either remote will operate both devices)Cons: Although it boasts wi-fi, this player requires a wireless lan adapter to use the net applications which will run you another $70-$80.
Summary: unless you've already purchased a Samsung TV, do not intend to use the net applications wirelessly, or have some crazy affinity to Samsung, I would purchase a different brand ...
Summary: unless you've already purchased a Samsung TV, do not intend to use the net applications wirelessly, or have some crazy affinity to Samsung, I would purchase a different brand of Blu-Ray since this is the second Samsung model I have purchased and both have required a wireless lan adaptor for full functionality. While the performance is decent, I think you could get the same quality from other makers without having to pony up another $75 should be built in.
