OK BD player. Do not buy if you want Netflix.
by digitalengineer on March 24, 2011
Pros: Looks good. BD performance comparable to other units in price range. Interface passable.
Cons: Unit does not perform the basic functions advertised. A Google search on 'sony blu ray netflix buffer problem' returns 466,000 hits, confirming that sony has design flaws with their Netflix interface that have been well- documented for a year. Replaceme

Summary: The Netflix logo is prominently displayed on the box along with claims that the unit streams video wirelessly with their optional USB adapter. Discussions and complaints returned by the Google search above indicate the unit cannot play Netflix content acceptably, even over premium Internet connections with wired Ethernet.
At times, large blocks of content play without interruption, but often a selection stops every 6-30 seconds and 'buffers' for up-to two minutes, making it unwatchable. There is no apparent pattern - some movies or episodes of a series play while others will not. Generally, problem selections become watchable on another day.
As a software/hardware engineer and technical consultant for over 20 years, I maintain a LAN of 10 computers (including a LAMP Web Server) and many peripherals in my home. No other device, wired or wireless, has connectivity or speed problems. No other streaming-capable device, including other BDs, exhibit this problem on a regular basis. Whenever the Ethernet-wired sony could not play a selection, a wireless notebook or another BD played the program uninterrupted. The problem is NOT Internet connection speed.
I own several other sony products and have never had a problem, probably because they are from the other end of the price spectrum. As a long-time customer I wanted to work with them to resolve this problem and contacted customer service. After 8 transfers and several hours of delays, two tier-3 sony support reps (Nick 0n 03/22/11, Mark on 03/23) admitted sony is aware of the problem and can't fix it when confronted with the information in this review. They offered 2 options: send the unit to Laredo TX for eventual replacement (at least 1-2 weeks and keep your packaging because they only send a shipping label) or get a refund from the merchant.
A second defective unit is hardly a solution, and while sony is jerking you around with expensive, useless 'solutions' (buy more bandwidth), your merchant's return period will expire if you follow their recommendations. They refuse a factory refund under any circumstances.
Knowingly making false claims about a product constitutes fraud. The attitude I was confronted with made me feel that sony is stonewalling and refusing to accept any responsibility until confronted with a class action, which traditionally costs less than a recall.
This little toy and my experience with the 'new' sony customer service have guaranteed that no sony product will be added to my entertainment centers in the future. If I cannot get a refund, this unit will go to recycling. Caveat emptor!2 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great Blu-Ray performance!
by chesskix on April 20, 2013
Pros: Blu-Ray and DVD upscale provides excellent picture and sound. Recently added Amazon Streaming runs very well without pausing.
Cons: Netflix pausing problems like everyone else ... works well at times ... other times forget it.
Summary: Good BDP and with Amazon streaming feature added it is a good value.

Bought it for Netflix and BD's, works fine.
by straybeat on September 15, 2011
Pros: Must have over 30 online video streams. Netflix is flawless. Upscales regular DVD's fairly well. You can see they are better than a regular DVD player. We chucked the DVD player. Frequent firmware upgrades, always adds something new.
Cons: Youtube navigation painful as stated. BDLive is still a worthless advertisement, nothing more.
Summary: A cheap versatile player with lots of featuers for the money.

We use Netflix through this player all the time. We have this player connected via ethernet to our router, and find the streaming to be seamless. We had trouble viewing one movie a month or so ago, but it turned out it was Netflix error. Their system detected the problem automatically and credited our account for $1 (:)). This player does all we ask. -
Bought it to watch Netflix and it failed miserably

Summary: Using this on a 9.5 MBPS cable internet connection wired directly to the router it was virtually impossible to watch Netflix. Dont care about Blu Ray disk performance,as I already have a non-streaming Sony Blu Ray player for that, works fine for that purpose. Just thought it would be nice to have a "combo" device.
While (attempting) to watch Netflix I experienced constant random pausing and buffering events. sometimes for minutes on end. My experience was exactly like the other reviewer's.
The same day I placed a Roku XD on a different TV two rooms away from router (wireless) and it performs flawlessly, so I know it isn't my network. FWIW Netflix also works great on my PC. The Sony went back today and another Roku ordered to take its place, -
Netflix does not work well with Bx-37
by randomly2009 on May 9, 2011
Pros: It works with Blueray, Pandora, Youtube.
Cons: It does not work with Netflix. It gives the error message like, "the service cannot be accessed at this time; reference code 300. " Sometimes, it gives error message like "the server cannot be contacted." I am sure it is not because of problems with the r
