The good: The Sony BDP-S590 has built-in Wi-Fi, 3D compatibility, and an ample suite of streaming-media services, including Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant, Pandora, and Vudu. It's also the sleekest Blu-ray player I've seen this year, with a well-designed remote that includes a dedicated Netflix button. The BDP-S590 is also one of the better players for playing back digital media files like MKV, DivX, and Xvid.
The bad: Sony's user interface isn't as intuitive as those from some competitors, especially the interfaces for Amazon Instant and Hulu Plus. It's also relatively slow at loading discs, taking almost twice as long as some competitors.
The bottom line: The Sony BDP-S590 is a great-looking Blu-ray player with built-in Wi-Fi, 3D compatibility, and tons of streaming-media apps, but it's slow to load discs and has some user interface quirks.

Great All Around Player!

Pros: Great picture and sound quality, excellent streaming,
Works very fast when skipping chapters or loading a scene from menu,

Summary: First step for any modern electronic device, update your firmware. My initial update took over 5 minutes. I also recommend registering at internet.sony.tv as in the past some Sony products won't connect to certain services until you do. I connected to AmazonVideo on Demand and Netflix, BEFORE I registered it, so they may have responded to complaints and dropped the requirement, but incase there is a service that require it get it out of the way, it only takes a minute if you have a Sony account already
Netflix app(they upgraded! Sony fans rejoice!):
One glaring fault with (past/pre-2012?) Sony visual products is their Netflix app, as for years Sony decided to have a proprietary interface, and if you have researched it, a LOT of people had Netflix streaming issues. I guess Sony finally took note, as the new interface is like a across between the Wii interface and the Panasonic interface, as in it looks like you avgerage Netflix app now. I watched the Norwegian film TrollHunters, and it took about 15-20 seconds to load the movie, 10 seconds for the Netflix stream to stabilize to the bandwidth( this is mostly on Netflix's end I believe), with the unit 10 feet from my router. For the entire movie, it never reloaded or refreshed, or froze, and was in 1080 with 5.1 sound. I also paused the movie and rewound several times with no reload or delay. Truly the smoothest Netflix experience I have had yet on any of my devices. If your getting the S590 I assume this will be important to you. And yes, it has a dedicated Netflix button, and the app loads faster than my Wii or Panasonic Blu Ray players, and my Sony TV's, so I assume they have "fixed" it, but I haven't done a lot of viewing yet.
Blu Ray performance:
Another reviewer said it won't play Disney movies, but I didn't have a problem, more later. First I put in the Star Trek (2009) Blu Ray, which has great visual beginning. I didn't have any performance issues that I could tell, and the menus are VERY fast and responsive, almost to a fault as there was a bit of shutter on the pop up menu, but unless you watch the movie with the pop up constantly going up and down I don't see this as a big issue. It was roughly 30 seconds from hitting the eject button to close the tray to the Paramount intro screen going, not bad.
I then tried a 3D Disney Blu Ray (Tangeled, a true Disney made film), as one reviewer had said Disney BR does not work. Seeing as how this player is VERY new( a few weeks to a month on market), My guess is there was a firmware issue, disc issue, or user issue. That said, Tangeled played flawlessly in 3D as I skipped around chapters trying to cause an issue, but it all worked great.
Also, this player, in my opinion, works very fast when skipping chapters or loading a scene from menu, where some playera seem to pause or lag. It was also quick to fast foward and "rewind", with little to no pause when hitting the button. A noticeable leap over my 2011 model panasonic bdt-220.
Network set-up:
As usual for modern Sony products, if you have a WPS router, took roughly 2 minutes, from the time I started the set up on the TV, walked to my router in the next room and hit the WPS button, and then walked backed to tell the TV to begin connecting.
The Media Remote app for Android worked very well, but you must first go to the settings menu on the TV and scroll down to the Media remote section, and "register"(aka activate, a button push) the feature(an unnecessary step IMO but I guess they are worried about people with an unprotected router have their TV taken over by pranksters?).
Now some people are complaining about build quality. It's true it doesn't feel as sturdy at the Panasonic Players I bought last year, but is by no means flimsy. Unless you are planning on dropping it regularly, or letting your dog chew on it, I don't see a problem with this. It does look nice, with a brushed metal "look" on the case.
A with seemlingly EVERY Blu Ray player, it does not come with an HDMI(which baffles me, it isnt expensive to make a high quality HDMI cable, don't get fooled by the HDMI cable prices).
*Note, I suggest you have to compare prices before you're will buy this blu-ray player at: **************.info/Sony-BDP-S590

Huge Amount of Apps! Excellent BD Player!
by pug319 on May 2, 2012
Pros: GUI is easy to navigate, Netflix runs perfectly, Zillions of Apps, Nice, solid unit.
Cons: A little slower than the Panny BDT 220. I returned the 220 for this.
Summary: The load times are maybe only 20-30 seconds longer than the Panasonic BDT220. I've had both. I was having issues with Netflix Audio lag on the 220 and I ...

Great player
by Joel_Cairo on April 27, 2012
Pros: Nice design. Greeat app selection, good Wifi connection, 3d demo channel and access to Sony Movies and Music unlimited.

Summary: Above reviewer is full of it. Player runs Netflix just fine for me. Player is set up in my bedroom with an Apple TV and Roku and I am getting a stronger Wifi connection with the Blu-ray player versus the other two devices. The last Samsung Blu-ray player I bought had limited file compatibility and no access to Movies unlimited (Sony exclusive) and the Wifi was spotty at best. Plus Sony's player has a demo channel for 3D content. I am also in the middle of a service nightmare with Samsung on a 32 inch my mother bought form them with the capcitor issue. Avoid Samsung like you would the plague.

Not a Techie Blu Ray Player
by Sree9383 on December 22, 2012
Pros: Sleek and Simple
Cons: Lacks quite a bit of technical features such as auto-suggest on youtube videos, slow in loading discs, slow in playing netflix movies, not easy to connect to youtube accounts.
Summary: Overall I am disappointed with this product, I am not sure why this is getting thumbs up from every site.

This machine is total junk! I would never recommend it!
by jpvkkv on July 19, 2012
Pros: Many cool applications if they worked.
Cons: Machine immediately converts itself from a Blueray player to a paper weight as it is worthless for online use when the machine decides it needs an update to the firmware. This generally takes 5-10 min and fails 98% of the time's attempted.
Summary: To add insult to injury tech support didn't even know they released an update, and kept refering me to a link to an older version of their firmware.

SONY is crap.
by JIMMYBfrom10aSEE on June 12, 2012
Pros: The SONY brand meant good quality at one time, but now, not so much.
Cons: Product did not work properly, has slow response, and eventually died completely with a rented DVD inside! SONY's service team was not too worried about it and was more concerned with selling me a refurbished unit.
Summary: DO NOT BUY SONY. Product stopped working properly, then stopped working completely. SONY told me to hire someone to get a DVD out that is locked in the device, then ...
Summary: DO NOT BUY SONY. Product stopped working properly, then stopped working completely. SONY told me to hire someone to get a DVD out that is locked in the device, then package it up send it to them with $131 and they will send me a refurbished device as a replacement. I said that I might buy 2 cheap players for that price at Wal-Mart. "Grace", with a thick foreign accent, who might have been "Peggy", told me that was my choice and ended the call. SONY just narrowed my search for all future tech products by removing themselves from contention.

Summary: The BDP line has long had problems with speed, both when the device is turning on and when it's loading a disc. Sony really needs to scrap the firmware for these things and completely start over. On the other hand, Sony is the king of planned obsolescence in their hardware, so by the time you can't wait any longer to get a better blu ray player, the BDP will break anyway so the decision to upgrade will be easy.

Look elsewhere for a connected BR player
by rock06r100 on April 26, 2012
Pros: Looks nice, decent price
Cons: Netflix stuttered from day 1, even though I eventually switched to a WIRED connection in frustration. We went back to the store, bought a Samsung, installed it in the exact same location, and *never* experienced another netflix problem (w/ WIFI now).
Summary: Buy SONY if you want your netflix movies routed through a server in China or Japan so that they stutter/stop/start 100 times every few minutes. Otherwise, stay away.
