- The JBL On Stage II's new wireless remote makes these attractive iPod speakers even easier to use, but we're still disappointed by its bulky AC adapter and its lightweight bass response.

Summary: i have the original version of thise device but will soon bye purchasing the new and improved. basically what you've read by the cnet folks says it all. to give it only a 7 out of 10 just because it has a bulky adapter and no battery option seems a bit harsh. the sound is realy great for a small area. i live in an apartment and it is perfect. if you want big sound, this is not the way to go, but if you want sound comparable to a compact stereo you will get it with this. it's also great for traveling. if you spend time in hotels, you can easily pack this and take it anywhere. i also love the design. it's so cute and takes up such a small amount of space. i bought the first version without a remote, so i will definitely be buying the new version just for the remote and i'll bring the old one into the office.
Updated
i have the earlier version of these speakers, but will be purchasing this one just for the remote. i don't listen to music totally blasting without headphones, so low to moderate volume levels sound great. because of the circular design, the sound really fills a room. although there are some people disappointed in the bass, it is amazing to me what good sound you get from such a small device. if you want something that will fill your whole house with sound this is not the way to go, but this is perfect for travel (yes, AC adapter is bulky but it's just an AC adapter and so it's small anyway), the office, the kitchen, a bedroom, or small apartment.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Amazing... but

Summary: I got these speakers for Christmas for my 5G iPod. The speakers are very good and the remote is convenient. Also, they're very portable, as long as you have a outlet around. That brings me to my cons. The adapter is quite big and heavyish. Also, the speakers begin to buzz and get a little static when playing at higher volume levels. Also, the volume levels make a big jump. That's what you get from having dedicated volume controls i guess. It's great for everyday listening, just don't expect to wake the neighbors.

Surprisingly Great Solid Sound

Summary: I received this speaker component as a gift. As I was setting it up for the first time my expectation on performance was really low. It felt solid, it is made by a company known for quality, but frankly, I come from a gerneration where size of audio equipment infers quality. And yes I know, this doesn't make sense when I remember that it's for my iPod which is small. Enough about perception and emotion. The fact is that this small unit is just super. It has adquate bass - (oh yeah, I'm from the generation where bass should be kept in check with other tuning characteristics and not vibrating to the point where you can no longer detect or hear the sound shifts and distinctions.) I use this in my kitchen, office and I plan on taking it with me when I travel because it's really small enough to pack. I list to a lot of podcasts. My biggest new problem is finding something to put it in before I pack it in my suitcase. If you are younger and insist on boom numbing bass that distorts the sound qualities of music then this unit is probably not for you. Then again, if you are into boom numbing bass, you're not probably listening to real music anyway, uh? I recommend this speaker very highly. (oh and also, it has some design give so you can leave your case on the iPod and still insert the iPod into the device - very cool)

Good, but if your looking for some power, not the way to go.

Summary: Okay, this is a great product for someone that likes things loud, with no bass. This little thing amazed me at first because it has great sound for how big it is, however I was looking for something much more, and the Logitech Z-5500's are in the mail right now.
It's very nifty, touch sensitive volume control, good remote (though my first one didn't work), I love how you can charge and update your ipod through the dock.
However, if you have a case on your iPod, you have to take it off to fit in this dock. Also, it doesn't fit Videos or Nanos too well.
If you can find these around for about 100 and your just looking to use them in a small room without being too demanding, then I'd grab this product. But if you're looking for a powerful system, look elsewhere.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: When i bought this, there was only 3 major ipod speakers out there, the $300 Bose, this one, and the $100 Ihome. I do not regret this decision, because this was, and still is a good set of speakers. If you have enough money to throw away a extra $150 for the extra bass boost of the $300 Bose, go right ahead, but for me i will stick with my JBL Onstage!

Great quality from a small device
by Hoiberg on January 8, 2007
Pros: This unit is perfect for my office, it allows me to charge my iPod at work after the Gym and small enough for the office. It also allows me to use it as speakers for my PC.
Cons: Round shape takes up space on desk, but it is not a deal breaker...
Summary: Well worth the money, I got mine onsale at Office Depot and was able to cash in on a $50.00 rebate, so this was WELL worth the $$. I would ...

A great system for the size, but not portable enough for my needs.
by d066father2k on October 4, 2006
Pros: Sounds great for its size. Sleek, compact design, 360 degrees of sound, remote was handy
Cons: Pricey, stationary, no control of sound quality (i.e. bass boost). Video iPod was not stable in the cradle, either.
Summary: Although pricey, this system is fairly decent, but I couldn't get past the portability issue. I'd suggest offering a system with a more rugged design and one that ...

Super Sound

Cons: No battery option (not that I would use it anyway)

The unit also works well as my "alarm clock" using the alarm feature on my Nano. I go to sleep (setting the sleep timer to 30 minutes) to one playlist, and then wake up via the alarm clock funtion to another selected playlist (all functions of the Nano).
The controls both on the face of the unit, and the remote control work well.
One "technical support hint": If you have problems getting your Nano to work with this unit (or any unit actually), read the manual for the Nano and "reset" your unit. It seems to work flawlessly after that.
Adapters come with the unit for various Ipods, but make sure your buying a the On Stage II unit (with remote) vs. the earlier Stage I unit with no remote (or apparently) the adapter you may need.
