The good: The Zvox Z-Base 420 costs significantly less than competing pedestal sound bars. Its sound is rich and powerful for the price, and a huge step up from the built-in speakers on a TV. The Dialogue Emphasis mode is a great option for boosting speech over background noise. There's also a built-in front-panel display, cleverly hidden behind the speaker grilles, which many competitors lack.
The bad: The cabinet of the Z-Base 420 can sometimes vibrate enough to make certain TVs buzz. And at higher volumes, it occasionally distorts. The included remote also has a cheap feel and mediocre button layout.
The bottom line: The Zvox Z-Base 420 offers an uncluttered look and solid sound at a budget price, but its quirks might give some buyers pause.

Summary: I am thoroughly enjoying the ZVOX 420. I heard about ZVOX while doing a google search for a competitor to compare with the Bose Solo. I had purchased a Bose Solo and did not like the sound. So while I was still in the Bose trial period, I ordered the ZBASE 420 to test them side by side. There is no comparison between the two. The clarity of the ZVOX 420 is significantly superior to the Bose. The BOSE Solo dialog is muddy and there are no tonal controls or enhancement options. I am using the ZVOX 420 without the dialog emphasis turned on and it is still extremely clear. The overall sonic quality for both movies and music is far superior to the Bose Solo. I have a full surround system built into my room and it sounds great But I find myself totally content to watch movies or listen to music with the ZVOX 420 due to the richness of the sound. Very satisfied with my purchase.
Pros: Zvox uses a wooden cabinet not plastic. Value Priced. Zvox technical and marketing pedigree is famous for good sound. Best single cabinet solution that is great for HD movies and watching concerts or Palladia. Set up was a breeze.
Pros: Great sound. Fantastic bass. Solid construction. I have a 46" LCd, so I have no vibration issues that were described in the editor review. Easy to synch with your cable remote. Discreet display which pleases my wife.
Cons: No dolby decoder, so i needed to plug in RCA from TV. Still sound great, much better than my last system which cost twice the price
Description:The Z-Base 420 is only 27.6" wide by 14.5" deep by 3.5" high. Everything is inside this compact cabinet – speakers, amplifier, virtual surround circuitry and powered subwoofer.
