Summary: This is a great boombox for tough environments. The sound is very good. The volume gets up there where you need it in a loud workshop or construction site. This is probably not the boombox for just casual use like the beach or your bedroom because of it's size. Although with that said, all of the buttons and the CD player are sealed against dust (sand) and it is water resistent (it can be sprayed/splashed with water) so it would be most excellent for the beach. If you have the room and desire to heft it around.

Summary: I bought this mainly for the audio line-in feature. I have 2-Zunes and there are only two Zune speaker cradles available. Both of them are very expensive ($200.00 & $500.00) and are for indoor use only. I would have rated this a 10 if it had USB charging capabilites. I needed something for indoors/oudoors and traveling. You can plug in any mini-stereo jack. This works with any MP-3 player, ipod, Zune, etc. The sound quality is excellent from the audio-in. I haven't tried the radio or CD player yet since I have 5,000+ songs on my Zune. This thing is big, tough, dust-proof, and waterproof. You can't drop it in a lake, but you don't have to worry about rain or hose spray. It also has a faily large storage compartment that can hold your AC adaptor, audio line, MP3 player, rubbers, etc. I would definitely check it out if you have a Zune. Available at Sears for $129.00 plus tax or Amazon $140.00. Now I can share my music anywhere without head-phones. My family loves it, my neighbors not so much.

Summary: I purchased this unit (after extensive research) for teaching dance classes because the sound quality was good and it was supposed to be "rugged" which I needed since I take it to various classes and have it in the back of my car. Within 3 months I was having problems with the CD player not always reading my burned CDs. I started jacking in with my IPOD which sounded OK, but sometimes during class it would suddenly switch from Aux (IPOD) over to CD. I went to start a class yesterday and it would not stay on. When I pushed the power button it would shut itself off within 2 seconds. So it appears to be dead after only 9 months.

Summary: The antennae broke because of a manufacturing defect. Sony would allow me to replace the antennae if I paid $ 28 plus shipping and handling. They would not send me the part they said was under warrantee unless I sent them the product at my cost and waited two weeks for repair. I spent over an hour on the phone and was transferred to five people to reach this conclusion. Ray C1FC said it was the best he could do

Fills a need in a mediocre way
by clanceylufkin on August 14, 2009
Pros: A decent sounding boombox with a cd player that isn't dead ugly
Does not go back to track one if you hit the stop button on the cd player
Big robust buttons and knobs-even your dog could figure out how to use it.
Good radio reception
Cons: As big as this thing is it should sound a bit better.
Transformer is inline on the electrical cord and not built in.
Because of the two mentioned cons this unit is not as portable as it should be.
Could be prettier

Summary: I recently had a two year old Panasonic boombox stop working on me and need to find a replacement. I wanted something portable (with a handle), with a cd player and radio and decent sound quality. It was also important to me that the unit didn't loose it's place when you hit the stop button on the cd player (it goes to the beginning of the track, not the beginning of the cd - not perfect but ok). Also I didn't want something that looked like it fell of an 80s vintage sci-fi spacecraft. Money was no object. Wow...was I surprised how difficult my criterion was!!
The Sony fit my needs but oddly just barely on all accounts. It wasn't butt ugly but it also won't win any design awards. It sounds pretty good but nothing to right home to mom about. It doesn't completely loose its place when you hit stop but it also doesn't start right where you left off. It's portable with a handle but it's just portable to the point that it's a little easier to haul around than a microwave oven.
If I was marking this on the curve then I'd have to give it 5 stars because there is nothing out there to compete with it.
If there were a lot of other options out there I'd have to give it 2.5. A perfectly mediocre score for a set of features that are all completely mediocre.
So I compromised.

Summary: I bought this second hand, but it was almost new. So far I've mostly used it for radio, both FM and AM. It gets much better reception than my bookshelf stereo in my fringe area. It does play my MP3 CD's just fine. It's very large, though, and doesn't fit on my table. But it seems very sturdy; I plan on using it a lot when I'm outside in the yard working soon. I hope it lasts, because so far I'm very satisfied.
