Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT Reviewed on October 20, 2004 Check prices
Product overview
Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT
  • CNET Editor rating:
    0.0 stars
      Overall score: 0.0 (0.0 stars)
  • Average user rating: 4.0 stars out of 27 reviews

The Bottom Line: We've given plenty of coverage to the priciest, highest-end 3D graphics cards, but what about 3D for the rest of us? Nvidia's new midrange GeForce 6600 GT card delivers respectable game performance for roughly $200--significantly less than the $400 and $500 6800-series cards. Read review

Specs: NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT, 2048 x 1536, 128 MB (max), 128 MB, PCI Express x16, PC, GDDR3 SDRAM 256-bit

ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
  • CNET Editor rating:
    3.5 stars Very good
      Overall score: 7.0 (3.5 stars)
  • Average user rating: 2.0 stars out of 4 reviews

The Bottom Line: If you're looking to build a home theater PC, we recommend ATI's Radeon HD 2600 XT as the midrange card to use, thanks to its nearly perfect HD video image and its no-fuss installation. But for 3D gaming, you'd be much better off looking for a good deal on a faster, older graphics card. Read review

ATI Radeon X1900 XTX (512MB)
  • CNET Editor rating:
    3.5 stars Very good
      Overall score: 7.0 (3.5 stars)
  • Average user rating: 4.0 stars out of 8 reviews

The Bottom Line: If you're looking for a single high-end 3D card, the Radeon X1900 XTX shows a lot of promise. If you have dreams of upgrading to a dual-card configuration, stay far, far away. Read review

ATI Radeon X1950 XTX (512MB) Reviewed on August 23, 2006 Check prices
Product overview
ATI Radeon X1950 XTX (512MB)
  • CNET Editor rating:
    3.5 stars Very good
      Overall score: 7.7 (3.5 stars)
  • Average user rating: 2.5 stars out of 2 reviews

The Bottom Line: ATI's Radeon X1950 XTX is the fastest single-chip 3D card that you can buy. Unfortunately, with Windows Vista and its accompanying gaming technology, it's going to become obsolete in just five months. ATI adjusted the price of the Radeon X1950 XTX accordingly, but at $450, it's still not an insignificant purchase. We recommend it only if money is no object. Read review

Product overview
PNY Verto GeForce 7900 GS
  • CNET Editor rating:
    3.5 stars Very good
      Overall score: 7.3 (3.5 stars)
  • Average user rating: 3.0 stars out of 5 reviews

The Bottom Line: Featuring Nvidia's latest midrange GPU, the $200 PNY Verto GeForce 7900 GS offers a strong bang for the buck compared to its ATI rival. We recommend it if you are looking to play 3D games on an LCD monitor, aren't too concerned about sky-high frame rates, and won't be bothered if a next-gen replacement emerges in the coming months. Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 X2 (PCI-e 2.0, 2GB, GDDR3) Reviewed on February 6, 2009 Check prices

Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 X2 (PCI-e 2.0, 2GB, GDDR3)
  • CNET Editor rating:
    Editors' choice 4.0 stars Excellent
      Overall score: 8.0 (4.0 stars)
  • Average user rating: 1.5 stars out of 3 reviews

The Bottom Line: Even if it's a relative power hog, the Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 X2 brings so much speed and utility to the table it's hard for us to recommend another midrange 3D card. Only the particularly power conscious or those who play games with known multichip scaling issues should look elsewhere. Read review

Product overview
eVGA e-GeForce 9800GTX+ Superclocked graphics card - GF 9800 GTX+ - 512 MB

The Bottom Line: EVGA's GeForce GTX 9800+ Superclocked edition has basically the same price-performance benefit as its Radeon HD 4850-based graphics card competition. With identical bang-for-the-buck, you'll like this card if you demand power efficiency, but you should turn to ATI's card if your PC has limited upgrade room. Read review
