After 10+ years, this amp is still crushing it
by SmittyNice on December 5, 2011
Pros: Durability, stays cool, small in size makes it easy to mount just about anywhere.
Cons: Input screws wear down, signal sensing quit on me.
Very expensive product but can understand why.
side controls make adjustments a bit difficult. Adjustments are also tough to move.

Summary: I am 100% behind this amp and would spend the money to get the new model when it bites the dust. But I'm still waiting for that day to come. I drive 20k miles a year and have this amp on and up 99% of the time.
Couldn't have asked for more when I bought it and I didn't even know what I was getting myself into.
The 500/1 is an excellent addition to almost any system.
Pros: Reeks of quality with a lot of quality power, very cool running, flexible, lots of settings, and much more.
Cons: At a $599 msrp, it's very expensive for a 500 watt amp.

Summary: The JL Audio 500/1 is a very high quality class D monoblock subwoofer amplifier. Considering its roots, you should expect nothing less. JL Audio is a very well respected name in the car audio industry. Their award winning products are among the best available at any price. The manuals that ship with the amplifier are very informative and easy to understand. The sound enhancing features on this amp, from the gains to the parametric bass boost are nothing but top notch and won't leave even the pickiest tinkerers wanting. Of course, that's not to say their are not better options available, but those options are extremely scarce and even more, far more expensive. Simply put, the 500/1 is the cream of the crop. Any car audio enthusiast would be lucky to have one.
The character of the 500/1 is that of a gentle giant. It excels in the subtle nuances required by audiophiles, and when commanded to, it will peal your roof off. It can tickle your senses or beat you to death, your call.
The most defining single comment I can make about this amp is simply this, visceral. It is not for the faint of heart. If all you want is a little bump in your trunk, there are much cheaper options better suited for the more casual listener, this amp is for enthusiasts. But, if you want accurate, slamming bass at ear splitting volumes, this amp was made for you.
You must, however, be careful. This amp can be dangerous in a couple ways. One, it is very powerful. Generally speaking, the 500/1 tests out to over 600 continuous (RMS) watts. Being this powerful, you must pair it only with subwoofers capable of handling the power. For example, pairing this amp with a single 150 watt rated 12w1 is speaker suicide. Probably the best mate for this amp is a pair of 12w3v3's. Capable of a continuous abuse of 300 watts each, you are safe to abuse your hearing without blowing your speakers. And hearing, that would be the second thing to be careful with. Speakers and amplifiers of this power level can very easily produce sound pressures high enough to permanently damage your hearing.
The cost of this amp is somewhat of a sting. Any time you exceed $1 a watt, it's a pricey amp. Is it worth the money? Well, my cars are exclusively JL Slash Series amplified. Every amp in the series is well worth the entry price as they are all very, very good.
So split your piggy-bank and go JL, I promise you will not be disappointed.
Thee best amp for the money!

Summary: Quite possibly the best sub amp I have ever used. I have used many other brands installed by one of the best dealers in the S.F. Bay area (www.soundinnovations.com). All of which were very reputable brands (Rockford Fosgate, Phoenix Gold, Alpine etc.) and JL Audio is the better. I have a complete JL Audio system of amps, components and subwoofers. The best system i have ever owned and heard.
