Garmin Nuvi 205W price range: $129.99 - $219.99

The good: The Garmin Nuvi 205W features a large touch screen and an easy to understand interface. Start-up, destination entry, and trip routing/rerouting times are slightly faster than the competition. "Where am I?" feature is very useful for emergencies.
The bad: The Nuvi 205W's feature set is rather limited. Mounting cradle is bulkier than competing models and not very portable.
The bottom line: As entry-level GPS navigators go, the Garmin Nuvi 205W is still one of the best choices available for users who want speedy performance without breaking the bank.
When most people think GPS device, the first name that pops into mind is Garmin Nuvi. Garmin's Nuvi 200 line of navigators was an excellent blend of ease of use and value. The new Nuvi 2x5 line of GPS navigation devices seeks to build on that reputation with a few new features, while still keeping the price relatively low. The Garmin Nuvi 205W is one of two entry-level models in the 2x5 line, and features only the most basic navigation features.
The standout feature in this new model is a new "Where am I?" option that can come in handy during an emergency; but mostly the 205W represents a significant performance boost over the older Nuvis. Buyers who like what they see in the Nuvi 205W can choose to step down to the 205, which features a smaller screen, to save a few bucks, or up to the 255W, which adds text-to-speech to the feature set.
Design
The Nuvi 205W's chassis will be immediately familiar to anyone who has ever used a Garmin PND. The GPS measures 4.8 inches by 2.9 inches by 0.8 inch and features a color touch screen that takes up almost the entirety of the front panel. The screen measures 4.3 inches diagonally and displays full-color imagery at a WQVGA resolution of 480x272 pixels.
Along the top edge of the device is the power/lock slider. Pushing this slider toward the power icon powers the device on or off. Moving the slider toward the lock icon will lock the touch screen. The left edge of the unit houses an SD card slot, while the back panel is home to the speaker and Mini-USB charging/connecting port.
The unit ships with a 12-volt power cable, a suction cup windshield mount and cradle, an adhesive disk for dashboard mounting, and a quick start manual. The cradle features a good amount of articulation from its ball jointed neck and better adhesion than the TomTom EasyPort mount. However, the Garmin's mount is much bulkier than the TomTom's, and less portable.
After powering on the Garmin, the user is taken first to the Nuvi's main menu screen. Two large options are displayed for "Where to?" and "View map." Along the bottom edge are smaller icons for volume, tools, and--if a destination has been chosen--stop or detour route.
Choosing "Where to?" takes users to the destination entry screen where they are given the choice between entering an address, searching points of entry, browsing stored favorites, etc.
The Nuvi's interface is a bit more primary than the competition from TomTom, but at the same time, is slightly easier to navigate and understand.
Features
The Nuvi 205W and its smaller sibling, the 205, are Garmin's entry-level models in the Nuvi 2x5 line, and predictably the units are not feature-packed powerhouses. However, the Nuvi 205W has a few tricks.
The device comes preloaded with City Navigator NT map data for the contiguous U.S., Canada, or one European region, depending on where the unit was purchased. (Our tester was loaded with maps for the lower 48 states, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico.) For major roads and highways, the Garmin displays a speed limit icon as a warning for drivers approaching or exceeding the limit.
"Where Am I?" is a feature tucked in the Tools menu that displays your current GPS coordinates/elevation, the nearest address, and the nearest intersection, all of which can come in handy when relaying your location to emergency services or roadside assistance. The feature also provides quick links to the closest hospitals, and police and gas stations.
The unit comes preloaded with seven vehicle icons, with dozens more available for download on Garmin's Web site.
While the 205W doesn't support traffic updates out of the box, it can be upgraded to support lifetime FM traffic updates or subscription-based enhanced MSN direct service with add-on antennas and/or cradles.
In addition to navigation-based features, the Nuvi 205W also features a picture viewer (which displays photos stored on the internal memory or an inserted SD card), a world clock, a calculator, and a unit converter.
Performance
Cold boot time for the Nuvi 205W was noticeably faster than the Nuvi 200 that it replaces, with a much faster satellite-lock time, which means less waiting between flipping the power switch and hitting the road.
Powered up and locked on, we searched for a few well-known points of interest. Nearby POIs are loaded quickly. The Nuvi doesn't support any sort of predictive text entry or autocomplete, but inputting a POI name or address is painless thanks to the Nuvi's responsive onscreen keyboard and fast search. The screen seems to buffer inputs, so you can quickly type a name without waiting for the Nuvi to register your inputs.
Our destination chosen, we hit the road and found the Garmin's routing of our test trips to be quick and, in most cases, identical to those chosen by the TomTom XL 340. Because the Garmin doesn't have to process IQ Routes or MapShare data, routing on the move and rerouting after missing turns is noticeably faster on the Nuvi 205W. (On the other hand, the Garmin doesn't benefit from learning better routes or free map micro-updates.)
In sum
Most users in the market for the Garmin Nuvi 205W should probably cross-shop the TomTom XL 340, which stacks up almost feature-for-feature with the Garmin. The TomTom unit's IQ Routes and MapShare features potentially give it a slight edge over the Garmin in the long run. However, the Garmin is a much faster, simpler, and easier-to-use device right out of the box, making it a better choice for nontechnophiles.
We gave the Nuvi 205W high design marks for its intuitive interface and big, bright screen. Its feature set is limited, but adequate for an entry-level device, resulting in an OK feature score. Finally, the Garmin's speedy booting, routing, and data entry earned it a good performance score.

Sharp looking, feature rich, basic GPS for the masses
by kevinpmil on February 17, 2009
Pros: Pleasing menus, easy to use, good support from manufacturer, well made windshield mount, standard usb cable is all you need to connect to a computer
Cons: Small inaccuracies noticed with maps, sometimes odd route selections, not as many advanced functions as tom tom.
Summary: I don't understand why everyone is so worried about "text to speech" on the devices. It always sounds odd. If you can't under stand "Turn Left" with the ...
Summary: I don't understand why everyone is so worried about "text to speech" on the devices. It always sounds odd. If you can't under stand "Turn Left" with the street clearly displayed at the top of the GPS, then you probably shouldn't be the one driving.
This device is very slick and feels like a much more expensive GPS. I've done side by side comparisons with a slightly more expensive Tom Tom, and this does all the same functions just as good, but looks better doing it. The tom tom's display seems more clunky and utilitarian, whereas this seems much more refined and clean.
As a basic GPS and travel partner, this works great. I love being able to find a Thai restaurant close to my location and it gives the phone # so I can call in my order before I arrive.
Garmin supports their product very good with firmware and software updates on a regular basis to improve features and functions.
They also have 60 days of free map updates after purchase in the event they release any new updates.
I received my GPS on Christmas and just got my MAP update in February. They also off some fun extras for customizing you GPS. (Free voices and free vehicle avatars)
If you are looking for a great inexpensive basic GPS, buy this one.8 out of 8 users found this user opinion helpful.

Poor Battery Life and Overall Performance
by markh5150 on May 15, 2009
Pros: Easily understandable voice directions; will identify the street, not just when to turn.
Cons: Very poor battery life; will not charge adequately in vehicle. Directions not always up to date.

Summary: FYI, I bought a Garmin Nuvi 250W about 6 mos. ago; this is my second Garmin. I have been quite disappointed with it - for one, the car charger will not charge this unit sufficiently to keep it going while it's turned on, while traveling. Remarkable, I know, for a car GPS, but, according to the Garmin rep. that I complained to over the phone, that's how the unit works (or doesn't work). Why would you buy a GPS that will only get you half way to your destination on an 8 hour trip? I wouldn't buy it again. As if that weren't enough, the maps also weren't as accurate, for some reason, as the older model that I had, which I never updated, and it will occasionally not be able to find a location that the older unit would, or, as it happens, will tell me I have reached my destination, when I'm a .5 mile or more away from it. My next GPS will not be a Garmin.

205w great entry level but we're going to upgrade
by joltedcalif on May 1, 2009

Summary: We are going to upgrade to probably a 265W because it sometimes announces the turn too soon and there is another street before the correct one and we turn on the wrong street. Of course, we could look at the screen and see the street name, but that isn't the best thing to do in heavy traffic! We also want to have the feature of REAL TIME TRAFFIC which the 265W has free for lifetime. We're not sure if the bluetooth feature is worth it or not. There are so many models of Garmins to chose from it is really confusing---and so many features. The PROS of this 205w is the larger screen is easy to see and its nice to see the little car moving along. The voice is clear. It is easy to program and seems to sense what street name we are typing in quickly. The CONS we already listed. We are going to keep the 205W for at home use and the 265W will be used to travelling/business. Garmin has good tech support via email but their phone support is poor since always a long wait time.

This is most likely the best gps system on the market.
Pros: This gps (mine) does everything. It is not a mp3. I do not need that It does not cost $300.00 or more and you don"t need that. Mine has voice directions , long story short it works like a charm at the best price. The screen is bright and cleer
Cons: The screen could be a bit bigger, but no big deal; that being said; it fits the case I have for it just fine.
Summary: This gps system price for price and turn for turn is the best.

Easy The Eyes, Better On The Ears
by albee61 on November 9, 2008
Pros: Very easy to set up. A gift from wife, she was able to set it up in 20 minutes, while we were driving to Chevy Chase, MD from NYC. Richly colored screen with excellent clarity, even better on the ears thru a superior digital voice replication
Cons: An annoyingly sounding beep when interfacing with the touch screen
Summary: If you can get this model for under $200, then the basic features and mistake-proof functionality makes this model a bargain. My first driving experience had me listening to the ...

Small and sleek but not a great GPS
by Carbfree on July 20, 2009
Pros: Very sweet looking GPS, small, light, easy to carry (even in a pocket), nice loud speaker, bright screen and automatically sense the light to adjust its brightness. Loved the windshield attachment.
Cons: Slow, poor design of maps and annoying as heck.

Summary: When starting you have to press "agree" in order to make it work. Every time! Colors of road are so similar to the route color that it got confusing. Hard to tell when to get off an exit. Gave us the wrong route many times. The road on the map was tiny while the car (representing you) was huge, You couldn't tell if you were on a 1 lane road or 5. All road sizes seemed exactly the same. Slow to refresh so it seems more like stills than an animated route. Sometimes it took 5 minutes to acquire the sats, even on a cloudless sunny day. Speaker, while loud, was slightly distorted. Power cord was in an annoying location, making it hang right over your steering column. The way the maps are drawn you couldn't tell if the exit was coming up, or a mile away. At one point I located where I was at the time and set it as a "Favorite" (so I could find my way back later). Later on when I tried to navigate back, it put the location I had saved in another state! I knew something was wrong when it told me it would take me 2 hours to arrive. I wanted to find Union Station in D.C. and it seemed impossible. Never asked me what state I wanted so, unless I knew the street name and address, I could just forget it. I had just gotten it and was using it with a friend (who was driving) and he was so annoyed, he kept asking me, "Why did you get this?" By the time the trip was over, I asked the same question.

This GPS hangs with the more expensive one's out there.
by louiex5 on May 28, 2009
Pros: I like that the product is user friendly. Takes you directly to where you would liike to go with ease. Easy to see and read with no confussion. I love the wide 4:3 screen. Good job Garmin.
Cons: I feel that ifor the price, it should also tell you the name of the road. Come on, really. Is that really a feature that you would charge a $100 dollars more for. My other con is, you have to go to menu in order to see the time.
Summary: I still like the product even though there are certain features that should be on there, but what the price is pending on where you go to purchase the item, ...

GREAT GPS!!!
by I Scott on December 3, 2008
Pros: Display big and bright. Accuracy is outstanding. Quite a few features for $150.00.
Cons: I can't think of any.

Summary: Got this at Office Depot for $150.00. Came with windshield mount and I bought a friction beanbag mount for it. Went on an unplanned trip to Moline/Rock Island/Davenport IA area...never been there before and it would have been a NIGHTMARE without this Garmin. It never missed a beat directing me to wherever I needed to go. Only one time was it "inaccurate" about a pizza place, but it put me within site of it. Got me to Walmart to hop by using the "points of interests" feature. The "Where Am I" feature that directs you to hospitals, gas stations, ect. is great. Get one and get peace of mind for road travel
