Garmin Nuvi 255W price range: $199.99
- Reviewed by: Antuan Goodwin
- Reviewed on: 07/20/2009
The good: The Garmin Nuvi 255W features a large touch screen and an easy-to-understand interface. Start-up, destination entry, and trip routing and rerouting times are slightly faster than the competition. "Where am I?" feature is very useful for emergencies. Text-to-speech reads street and points of interest names aloud.
The bad: The Nuvi 255W's feature set is rather limited. Mounting cradle is bulkier than competing models and not very portable.
The bottom line: As entry-level GPS navigators go, the Garmin Nuvi 255W is still one of the best choices available for anyone who wants speedy performance without breaking the bank.

by toriphile on June 29, 2010
Pros: ease of use
Cons: 1st unit wouldnt boot up after cpl days. the next 5 had text to speech problems & would freeze upon recalculation. these units were obtained from various best buys throughout the country. need my head examined for giving them this many chances.
Summary: i'm guessing garmin got bad chips from their supplier.

Simple, easy to use and accurate.
by Compfixer on May 10, 2010
Pros: Large screen, responsive touch screen keyboard, more than bright enough, traffic updates, intelligent routing and more.
Cons: I think the graphics could use a bit of an update.

Summary: Got this as a birthday gift and used it to get from Chicago to Columbus, Ohio. While it took me a different route than Google Maps wanted me to go, I ended up getting to my destination faster than when I used the Google Map to get to Chicago (even though I hit more traffic on the way to Columbus).
The interface was easy to use, it locked satellite quickly and I had no problems with it in the 5 hours it took to get from Chicago to Columbus. All in all, I feel that this is a great device.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

by CTroadrunner on April 22, 2009
Pros: It is accurate and simple to use. I just took it out of the box and used it - didn't even need to refer to the manual.
Cons: I can't think of one negative thing!

Serious problems with the Nuvi series
by petergnyc on July 25, 2009
Pros: It doesn't work! Garmin paid for the second return.
Cons: If your Nuvi crashes, as mine did, when performing a manufacturers required software update, you will not be able to reset the unit.

Summary: If your Nuvi crashes, as mine did, when performing a manufacturers required software update, you will not be able to reset the unit and have to send it back to Garmin for a repair. The repair takes 14 to 20 days, and Garmin does not pay for the return shipping. This has happened to me 2X.
Total out lay or the Nuvi 765 with accessories is close to $600
Customer service is very slow and hold times when calling are over 30 minutes.
Do not buy with out sellers extended warrantee.

Useless, because every 3-4 minutes it restarts.
by dennis444 on January 26, 2012
Pros: None since it doesn't work.
Cons: It restarts every 3-4 minutes and the only way to get back on track is to go to recent locations. Try doing that at 70 mph on a busy highway, and you don't know where you are.

After reading other reviews, I noted that many have downloaded updates and encountered the same problems later on. My review above may be premature. I downloaded the updates for this model and it seems to be working properly. Will update this review as appropriate.

Updated on Feb 2, 2012I stick with my original review. I updated the software and used it over two or three days. It continued to re-set itself every few minutes or even every few SECONDS. It is useless. -

It quit when the warranty ran out
by kentjt on August 21, 2011
Pros: It was easy to use while it lasted, but sure as another person wrote- after the first year, it just quit.
Cons: I had noticed that it sometimes looked for awhile for a satellite, and at times, it thought that I was still someplace else- like at home when I was close to work and vice versa.
Summary: If another unit lasted longer than a year, I would buy one of those- but I am very leery of getting another Garmin at this point, unless someone has a ...

Junk - Buyer Beware

Summary: After 1 year, when the warranty expired, my Garmin Nuvi 255W took longer and longer to acquire the satellites. It would try to acquire satellites for minutes on end, and finally, many times I has to turn off the power and restart in order to get the device to find the satellites (I live in Cleveland, so it's not like I was in the mifddle of no where). By the time it found the road I was on, it was too late to change routes to avoid traffic problems. I would not buy Garmin again. Cheap product. Waste of money.
