For the money not bad, I like the 4250 better
by fishermen088 on August 11, 2009
Pros: It has a nice large screen, very easy to read street names.
Lifetime traffic subscription is free, the routing is fast and accurate.
I love the way it makes a bell sound just before you make your turn.Cons: Takes a little too long to acquire a signal, you can not simulate any routes, it will not accept all cell phones, at least not my Motorola v3 which is one of the biggest seller on the market. If you ask it where you are it will not tell you.
Summary: I have both the 4250 and the 4700, but I get more bang for my buck from the 4250.
Plus I Never have to take my eyes off the road ...Summary: I have both the 4250 and the 4700, but I get more bang for my buck from the 4250.
Plus I Never have to take my eyes off the road when using the speech recognition software on the 4250, the 4700 I have to touch the speech icon first, which make you take your eyes off the road.4 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Excellent For The Money BUT...
by IFLYMAUI on August 10, 2009
Pros: Cost. Screen Size. AAA Tour Book. Bell chime confirmation. Double warranty if you are a AAA member.
Cons: Speaker quality is ultra sub-par making Bluetooth connections difficult.

Summary: Here's what I did: I bought a Garm 140T and a Magellan 4700. Both have many similar features including screen size. Yet they are far apart in their cost factor.
We took both units for a 50 miles drive. Both made mistakes and yet both did the job. Close enough.
The graphics on the Magellan were better. Garmin was acceptable.
Forget the voice reg. feature on Megallan. Road noise prevails and it never understood one of our commands (yet in fairness, it does take time for the unit to learn your voice).
Garmin used a excellent piano gloss black casing. Magellan used a cheaper painted silver casing on one side that will scratch and chip.
Garmin's USB connection was on the back. Magellan did a much better job by placing the USB port on the bottom. Much better.
At $249 as of Aug 09, it's a great price for a vey good (not excellent) GPS unit.
The Magellan is limited to North America driving whereas the Garmin can be made global.
The Magellan in my opinion was still the better unit! Good choice.
Opening both boxes, Magellan included a nice protective case and a color instruction brochure. Garmin included no case and just a small B/W manual.
I fully charged both units. Charged, I started the process of pairing them to my phone and to my home address. Both were equal in Bluetooth ease but the Magellan quickly figured out where I was and the Garmin took several minutes.
Magellan failed miserabally when we placed and tested cell phone calls to it. The speaker quality placed aft of the unit was small, tin-like and rattled the calls sound quality.
We took both out on a sunny ay and placed both in the dash where bright sun was evident. The Garmin's screen uses large ICONS so if you are older or have eyesight issues, the Garmin prevailed in ease of viewing. Excellent.
The Garmin was harsh on voice commands. Magellan was far more precise in speech quality and a bit slower in presentation was was a good thing allowing us to fully get the directions.3 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Could be better.. But Pretty good
by jzip on January 9, 2010
Pros: BIG clear screen, crisp voice, accurate directions and stylish.
Cons: The only bad thing I have noticed is it doesn't hear voice commands well, and I should be able to say more commands .
Summary: Overall it is an excellent gps that does everything i need . Lots of features, but some of them do not work very well. I do like it a lot tho! ...

Great GPS for the Money. Some Minor Issues
by joeone1 on December 29, 2009
Pros: Reboots occassionally
Bluetooth, cell phone quality poor
Voice commands poor
Power cord in dumb locationCons: Large 4.7" screen size
Better screen resolution than competitors
Better software than competitors
Look ahead exit & turn feature
Selectable turn sounds. The bell sound is really helpfull
Finds your location easier than competitorsSummary: Overall very good GPS. I have a Garmin 765T in my truck and now the 4700 in my wifes car. We rent a lot of cars over the year and ...
Summary: Overall very good GPS. I have a Garmin 765T in my truck and now the 4700 in my wifes car. We rent a lot of cars over the year and request the Never Lost GPS in the rental cars. So we have gotten to like the Magellan model better then the Garmin. Both are great GPS, but I have to say I now like the Magellan better than my Garmin. I told my wife I would trade her and she said no way. She really likes the bell sound Magellan uses just before a turn.

Excellent GPS just a few short strokes from being great
by steinstu213 on December 15, 2009
Pros: Large display, logical trip calculations, very loud speaker, I love the bell at turns, turns list, lane assist, bluetooth, free AAA, large POI database, quick touch menu and a very nice touch sensitive screen.
Cons: Not able to see road speed, direction or times at the same time. Highway speed limits not shown. A bit washed out display in strong sunlight. No A/C charger included.
Summary: You must update to firmware version 2.06 before doing anything else. Todays GPS systems have many bells and whistles and the 4700 is no exception. It is just a ...
Summary: You must update to firmware version 2.06 before doing anything else. Todays GPS systems have many bells and whistles and the 4700 is no exception. It is just a few steps away from being the best on the market. The purpose of using a GPS is to get from point A to point B. The 4700 excels at this. It chooses logical routes and gives you options as to the shortest distance, fastest speed, etc. The Garmin is great but lacks the turn list. The Tomtom is loaded with features but chooses crazy routes at times. You will be a happy camper choosing the Magellan 4700.

One of the better Magellan's
by moe3754 on July 10, 2009
Pros: Large clear screen, works well in direct sunlight, voice commands works very well.
Cons: None so far

Summary: After suffering through a Garmin Nuvi 785t and a tomtom 740 live I decided to give Magellan a try since I heard that they were purchased by MiTec international, they own Mio GPS's and others I believe. So I drove 50 miles to a Best Buy that had them in stock and purchased one for $299.99 and since I have AAA I received a second year of warranty from AAA for free.
Since I have only had it for less than 24 hours I cannot give a real good review but from what I have seen so far it has the 785t and the 740 live beat hand's down. The voice recognition on the 4700 is by far superior to the 740 live, I do not have to repeat myself five times and still not get the GPS to understand. The screen on the 4700 is great in direct sunlight where as the 740 and the 785 both wash out in sunlight.
The maps on the 4700 are spot on and have many new streets that neither of the other two had and as for navagation the reroute redraw is much faster than the other two.I really think that the 740 live could not find it's way out of a cardboard box!!!!
Both the Garmin and the tomtom had so many bugs it was not worth keeping either of them, this 4700 how ever seems to work quite well and with Magellan now being owned by a new company I hope that all of the customer service problem's are now a thing of the past also.
All in all I think that this is a keeper for me at least.2 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

It is an excellent unit.
by jayzpat on February 4, 2010
Pros: Lane-assist feature works pretty good. As most ppl, I like the bell sound that indicates turn. AAA tour guide is quite handy. I purchased from Amazon for $139. Lots of POIs. I was able to find most of the places which usually and occasionally visit.
Cons: Bluetooth connection.
Speakers and mic are not that great. You cant use this device to make phone calls when the unit it attached to the windshield.Summary: I took 4700 and Garmin 285wt on a test ride. Both were quite similar as both uses NavTech maps. Garmin looked better in a nice glossy case. One obvious thing ...
Summary: I took 4700 and Garmin 285wt on a test ride. Both were quite similar as both uses NavTech maps. Garmin looked better in a nice glossy case. One obvious thing I think Magellan is missing is a power indicator light. You can't really tell if the unit is plugged in properly. Other thing is, it doesn't have any "sleep" mode which is quite useful sometimes. I loved the bell sound indicating when to turn. I also loved the lane-assist feature. Magellan was very quick is receiving the satellite signal even when powering on the first time. It was quite impressive. It hardly takes couple of seconds to acquite the signals even from cold start. The only disappointment is the speaker and mic to make phone calls.
I was easily able to pair my phone ( HTC Tilt 8900) the first time. But after I disconnect the bluetooth and turned it on again, it took a while to connect it, only after turning the bluetooth connection off and on again. When in range it should automatically pair with my phone once it is paired.
Overall a very good unit and worth the price.1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Lots of Features but GUTLESS where it counts CANADA EH?
by edawg2000 on July 9, 2010
Pros: Large 4.7? screen
Auto-completion when entering addresses
Padded skin to protect while not in use included
OneTouch shortcut buttons very useful
Side of the Road announcing for your destination a plusCons: I had a list of approx 18 items that were very substandard and gltchy with this model but 250 characters doesn't even come close to how many CONS I found with this unit after using it for 6 months
Summary: Most reviews of this model are from people that have just taken it from the box and driven 50 miles with it or have it it less than a day. ...
Summary: Most reviews of this model are from people that have just taken it from the box and driven 50 miles with it or have it it less than a day. Reviews that shouldn't even be allowed to appear here. I have owned this terrible mess for 6 months and regret giving up my TomTom ONE everyday. Maybe our Yankee friends have better luck but in Canada no GO. I returned this unit thinking it was just a bad GPS - replacement unit was the same. Loaded with little annoyances and some not so little glitches
CONS: (Just a few)
- Estimation of arrival time is grossly inaccurate on most trips, not properly correcting until you are only minutes away (NUMBER ONE HUGE ANNOYANCE)
- Extremely slow to react to touch button input by user (NUMBER TWO HUGE ANNOYANCE)
- No ability to make user corrections as with TomTom devices, a major feature brain fart
- Bluetooth calls not clear at times and call is slow to complete at times often leaving the other person saying hello a few times while you have yet to even hear them pickup on the other end.
- Sends you indirect routes often when you know there is a faster way. Manually choosing your ?own? route often sees the device deducting time and mileage from the trip, something it should be figuring out FOR YOU.
- Some roads simply do not appear on the GSP, even though they have been in existence for many years
- No FM Transmitter / MP3 Playback as with it?s smaller model 4300 cousin
- ?Side of the road? (?destination on the left in 100 metres?) announcement for your destination sometimes incorrect
- 3D Building feature still has yet to function in Canada.
- MAP costs a rip off as with most GPS units
Went back to my British beauty "Jane" in the TOMTOM Go 730 yesterday and it was $140 off for a low price of just $139 CAD$ + taxes at FutureShop, hoping it fares better than this Magellan piece of junk (My wife's Magellan 4300 is just as bad. -
Good usability
by sfensler on June 19, 2010
Pros: Good visual display
Good warning before the turn
Maps the best way
On map POI's are cool
Phone connects but no address book. LG Cu405Cons: Using the latest update (2.20) and the JUNE 2010 MAP: a test on sortest an fastest on a known 20 mile route produces values that should be the opposite. Thus the 3 out of 5 starts
Summary: Since this is my first GPS I have no others to compare it to. I chose it on the basis of comparisons of other brands and other Magellan models. Not ...
Summary: Since this is my first GPS I have no others to compare it to. I chose it on the basis of comparisons of other brands and other Magellan models. Not all the features lived up to the advertisements.
Menus take a lot of practice to use!!!!
I wonder if voice commands have to learn the users voice to work well. Voice worked some in the house but very poorly in the car. At the current level of computer voice systems I expected better and more options such as voice commands with the phone.
The biggest disapointment is that although you can get map updates there are no additional maps other than the US, Can and Mex. Looking at one of the internal tables there is an option for other regions.
Speaking of the internal tables, the is an empty setting for MP3 and Pictures, THEY WOULD BE NICE!! -
works ok but map up dates are 2 years old
by tltampa22 on June 3, 2010
Pros: out dateded mapes makes this a very bad GPS
Cons: what good is a GPS if the places you try & go are not listed or the gps can not find them.
I called Magellan & the told me the last up date was in 2008.Summary: Trying to talk to the company at Magellan is just as bad as the maps. They have no idea about new maps or up grades.
