The Maestro 5310's roomy 5-inch screen makes for much easier viewing.
(Credit: Amazon)Shopping for a GPS? You can get one with a 3.5-inch screen for as little as $50, a 4.3-inch screen for under $100, or a 5-inch screen for--well, these models are relatively rare, so prices start at around $300 and rise sharply from there.
Not today. TigerDirect has a refurbished Magellan Maestro 5310 5-inch GPS for $129.99 shipped.
What's the big deal about a 5-inch display? That seemingly small amount of extra screen estate makes maps easier to view and onscreen menus easier to operate. Consequently, I'd say it's a safer GPS than one with a 3.5-inch screen.
The Maestro offers everything else you'd want in a GPS, too, including text-to-speech (i.e. it pronounces street names), 6 million points of interest, a windshield mount, and optional real-time traffic.
Even if you don't spring for a traffic subscription (which costs $60 annually after a free three-month trial), you can use the Maestro's SmartDetour feature to plot a route around suddenly slow or stopped traffic.
You don't get a lot of fancy frills like Bluetooth or a media player, but I consider that stuff fairly superfluous anyway. The big screen is the big attraction here, and the traffic option is icing on the cake.
CNET hasn't reviewed the 5310, but the handful of user reviews over at Amazon are overwhelmingly positive.
Because this is a refurb, the warranty expires after 90 days. As always, I think that's a potential positive: whatever problem might have existed has already been corrected.
In any case, this deal has been running all weekend, so there's a chance it'll be ending soon. If you're in the market for a nav system and you'd budgeted $100 or so anyway, I'd definitely consider paying a little extra for this big, beautiful screen.

excellent gps beautiful sceen
by cessna182flyer on October 22, 2008
Pros: The detail on the 5" screen is terrific, my wife has a garmin which just not as good as this. The update av. at Magellan free is a must have. Easy to use and for the money I paid 350 at best buy last week.
Cons: My only beef is I wish the brightness control for the screen. I wish it was not 2 menus down cause you really need to dim the display more that the automatic function does at night.
Summary: My wife has a garmin 260w and using this is 100% more fun. We went on vacation and we both wanted to bring my gps not hers

Ok but dumbed down a little too much.
by ldt49 on October 8, 2008
Pros: Easy to operate, screen is large enough to read comfortably, driving directions are accurate, and screen is bright.
Cons: A bit heavy, not compatible with MAC, so unable to update future updates through my iMAC, battery life not as long as advertised. Lane change directions good verbally but not always shown on screen accurately.

The 5" size makes for easier viewing.
by herbstroc_1 on May 14, 2009
Pros: The size of the unit makes it easier view. You can select the area you are located that allows only the towns and streets in your area. The unit will give you tne name of the streeet where you are about to turn.
Cons: The screen pastel colors of yellow roads and green terrain are not conducive for a colorblind person. The routing optimization takes 12 minutes to optimize a route for 20 addresses

Summary: The is a nice unit. It iw easy ti view due to its size. It give you the name of the stree where you will be turning. You can set the unit to the are you are located which gives you local towns and street. I have a Roadmate 3000T which I purchsed due to the fact that this is the only unit I know of that I can put in 20 address in the Trip Plannerf and then have the unit optimioze my route. It takes the 3000T 1.5 seconds to route 20 addresses. It takes the 5310 12 (yes TWELVE) minutes to route or reroute. The screen color is also a problem for me. I am partially color blind and the preselected pastel colors of green for the ground and yellow for the road makes it difficult to view the screen wihile driving. The 3000T allows me a selectiion of color combinations that I am able to view. I can see the road and the ground. I do not have to strain my eyes do determine where the road is located. I almost had a couple of accidents trying to determine where the road is located and what street I am suppose to turn on. With the capabilities of the 3000T I can go into any town in the USA and make a route to do myy 20 plus inspections. I do not need to know the streets of the town. I purchsed a Roadmate 1412 to see if this unit was any faster at optimation and the speed of optimaztion was the same 12 minutes. When I enter 10 addresses it takes about 5 minutes to optimize. My 03000T only takes 3 seconds to route the 10 addresses.

DON'T TRUST MAGELLAN

Pros: Nothing at all

Summary: I purchased and have a Magellan 4250 which a few months back was top of the line (supposedly). The Magellan unit is best used as a paperweight. It has very skimpy and outdated POI's even with the latest map and firmware. Customer service for Magellan is non existent. The 4250 has taken me on more wild goose chases than I wish to recount. It is POOR QUALITY with litteraly no customer service or support. STAY AWAY FROM MAGELLAN!!
