Magellan RoadMate 1470 price range: $139.99 - $229.93

The good: The Magellan RoadMate's OneTouch menu puts the most commonly accessed destinations and searches at a user's fingertips at all times. The smartly designed destination confirmation screen gives users a good deal of flexibility as to how they get where they're going. Large 4.7-inch touch screen gives users more real estate for maps and menus.
The bad: Poorly designed cradle interferes with power cable when mounting. The onscreen keyboard cannot be changed from its alphabetical layout to a more familiar QWERTY layout.
The bottom line: The Magellan RoadMate matches the competition's performance and ease of use, while providing a larger screen at a lower price.

Excellent maps, OK preformance
by 17zeng_michael on December 2, 2010
Pros: Maps include all 50 states including parts of Canada and Mexico, Puerto Rico; Performance is OK, can be better, often does what you want; OneTouch(TM) menu
Cons: Takes a long time to acquire signal when on the move, faster acquisition when at a stop; Sometimes reboots randomly to "boost preformance"; temporarily freezes when calculating a route
Summary: The GPS is affordable, and can help you get out of hunching over maps in no time. It is great but when I use it for long trips, and I ...
Summary: The GPS is affordable, and can help you get out of hunching over maps in no time. It is great but when I use it for long trips, and I take it with me on an airplane, I have to set the GPS position for faster acquisition of signal. It has a nice OneTouch menu. You can set the OneTouch to get to somewhere in "one touch." The only thing I get frustrated about is when I am truly lost, I need to wait several minutes for it to pickup some satellite reception. That sucks. Sometimes it reboots randomly while your on a trip or not and takes about 3 minutes to fully save all of your data and reboot completely. Great device. It is the average GPS a average person needs. Whom I recommend it to the people who only use their cars to get to work, and vacation with them. And many americans are like that.

Worthless as a routing device
by capnjim1 on October 9, 2010
Pros: Nice large display, like the voice prompts.
Cons: Incapable of logical routing. Consistently loses signal when within 5 miles of destination. Selection of fastest or shortest route has no effect on weird routing displayed. Does not update route from current location.
Summary: Unit has failed to provide proper routing on all trips since new on long or short routes. Will not recalculate route from present position. Constantly asks for U turns to ...
Summary: Unit has failed to provide proper routing on all trips since new on long or short routes. Will not recalculate route from present position. Constantly asks for U turns to take you back to it's original incorrect routing even if in the opposite direction. Loses signal often. This is not a device to use to direct you to a location if you aren't already familiar with the correct route. My previous GPS was a Garmin unit that performed flawlessly for 10+ years. Bought this unit for the larger display & has been a disappointment since new. Switches day/night display at odd times. Will not display in 3D mode. My first & last Magellan product.

No easy updates for my "new" two-year-old unit.
by YABBA DABBA DEAUX on September 18, 2010
Pros: It got me to destinations several times. Sometimes via debatable routes.
Cons: It sent me far south to go north. It turned on the bright daytime display at 5 am (dark). Tech wanted me to jump through multiple hoops to fix what should have been there in the first place.
Summary: Updates are not updates. All I got were prompts to buy updates. It sent me far out of the way, at 4am when going to a strange airport. All the "...
Summary: Updates are not updates. All I got were prompts to buy updates. It sent me far out of the way, at 4am when going to a strange airport. All the "help" I was told to do from tech support were steps my Garmin does all by itself. It flashed onto the daytime display in the middle of the night.

A GPS is no good without current software
by Brammy63 on May 16, 2010
Pros: Screen size, nightfall auto-adjust, new and improved cradle to power supply
Cons: Map software on brand new unit is well over a year old.

Summary: This would be a 5 star unit. The problems addressed in the original review by CNet seem to have been addressed, however without current mapping, this unit is a HUGE FAIL!. According to their site, the last map was Spring 09, according to my use of the GPS, it was a lot longer ago then that as far as mapping software is concerned. Out of the box, all the extra perks of this thing are outdated, even the AAA feature that tells you about events in the surrounding area is over a year old. Driving around town, roads that are at minimum three years old either don't appear or are not routed properly for the fastest route to destination. For example; on a trip yesterday the turn that I should have taken was shown on the map. However the unit kept telling me to make a U-Turn 1.5 miles further up the road. When mapping a quick trip to Wal-Mart, within ten feet of the entrance, the unit never gave the 'You have arrived message' As a matter of fact it looked as if I had fallen off the face of the earth according to the screen. I think this will be a return as I need to go places where I don't already know the location of the destination, the idea of both myself anf the GPS being lost due to out of date software is ridiculous.
I did forget to add that there is currently no new mapping software available. The latest update took fine but what is a GPS without maps? A pretty toy!

They must have fixed the complaints from the review
by jobycom on December 21, 2009
Pros: Large QWERTY keyboard, some control over map display, lots of POIs including vegetarian restaurant searches, easy to use and to see. They fixed keyboard and power cable/mount issue.
Cons: Slow to calculate long trip routes, odd routing choices especially when a route is altered, won't show ETA and trip distance at the same time.
Summary: Good unit. Lots of options in routing and POIs. Good for long trips but a little slow calculating the trips. One flaw of this and most GPSs I've used ...
Summary: Good unit. Lots of options in routing and POIs. Good for long trips but a little slow calculating the trips. One flaw of this and most GPSs I've used is the insane way in which they route. For instance, from Austin to Biloxi gives me only three choices--the same route is used for "Fastest" and "Shortest." It doesn't take into account that this route has several small towns with 30 mph speed limits whereas a couple of other routes have faster highway speeds. When I try to force it to learn these routes by excluding part of the highway it routes me down, it takes a strange convoluted route rather than the obvious. Similarly, the "Less Freeway" option routes me halfway to Dallas rather than the obvious state highways just north of Houston and Baton Rouge. If there were an easier way to force it to take certain highways, it would be more useful.
Some good news--the keyboard has a QWERTY option, and the power cable does not interfere with the mount. It looks like they changed the mount from the video so there is no interference now, at least on the unit I just bought.
Good unit. Lots of features for the price range, and so far I've had none of the problems listed in the first couple of reviews. -
Love it more every time I use it
by patdice on July 28, 2009
Pros: Tells you when to turn next as soon as you make a turn and rings a bell to tell you are there, the large screen, AAA features, announces street names.
Cons: it's not a Con, but funny, that it pronounced a street name differently.
Summary: I am so happy with the Magellan GPS system. I was worried about picking the right brand. Buy it!
