Magellan RoadMate 1700 price range: $18.17 - $295.64
- Reviewed by: Antuan Goodwin

The good: The Magellan RoadMate's OneTouch menu puts the most commonly accessed destinations and searches at your fingertips at all times. The smartly designed destination confirmation screen gives you a good deal of flexibility as to how they get where they're going. Its large 7-inch touch screen gives you more real estate for maps and menus.
The bad: In urban environments, the 1700 takes longer to establish satellite lock and can be inaccurate. Its 7-inch screen size may be too much for smaller dashboards and can make mounting it awkward. Its battery life is extremely short.
The bottom line: The Magellan RoadMate 1700 isn't a GPS device for everyone, but with its huge screen and road-trip-friendly features, we think truckers and RV drivers will love it.

Very Nice GPS!
by ThomasMatte on March 14, 2011

+ Display is so great
+ VERY easy installation and set-up
+ Intuitive interface

Summary: I purchased this mount at the same time as a Refurbished Magellan RoadMate 1700. I use the +/- system for ratings. This review includes the Extended Mount and the Roadmate 1700 GPS.
1. + Extended Mount is Very Sturdy, no need to use sticky disc, pad or standard mount included with RM 1700 kit on my dash, even though the dash is textured; the suction cup included with the extended mount is ROCK SOLID and attached itself to my dash like a it won't ever want to leave unless I lift the little lever. Having said that, I wouldn't leave any rubber mount exposed to sun for a long period of time, as it will likely lose suction or otherwise hurt the suction cup. I have a car cover on my vehicle in Southern Cal.
2. + Positioning the RoadMate 1700 below the front window with this mount is simple and effective. No road glare on screen, and the large display is not blocking your view out the window. In my case I have the mount attached to the dash top, but it hangs solidly down just above my radio in my Ford Fusion. No fuss, easy to reach and read.
3. + IGNORE!, repeat IGNORE! what you may have read or heard from customers or Magellan themselves about this GPS being best for a truck as it is SO LARGE. This thing works well in any size car as long as YOU HAVE THE EXTENDED MOUNT. But, If you are going to mount this in your window or dash; forget it, just too much blind space if your driving a car.
4. + 40somethings or older like myself can easily read the display without reading glasses. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS download the .pdf from Magellan, it's much more detailed. If you don't you may get confused, or not even know about some of the features in the RoadMate 1700. I would have never figured out how to switch from 2D to 3D view if I hadn't read the .pdf. (touch anywhere on map, touch 3d button). The buttons to change 2D/3D are not visible unless you touch the map first, they reside and appear where the left bottom button is.
5. - It's BIG, if you want to use it in a car, the extended mount is a must.
6. - Battery lasts a max of 30 minutes. Not a problem if you use this in your car as its alway hooked up to aux power, you are required to charge it for 1 hour before first use. I did not wait 1 hour and it worked fine out of the box.
7. - My biggest complaint has nothing to do with the Mount or GPS, it has to do with the shipping. SLOW; 4 days past the estimated delivery date.
8. - No traffic radio update (who cares!), but I had to put a negative for those who do. This option on other GPS units is rarely used, mostly a annoyance filled with useless untimely info.
Conclusion:
The extended mount is a well built solid piece of engineering. No shake was noticed at all. It installs easily with little fuss.
The Magellan Roadmate 1700 GPS is awe inspiring. Finally a GPS unit the "rest" of us can see without reading glasses. Very easy to use, Very accurate, inexpensive for the size. I scoured the internet for comparable GPS this size, so far non I can find that compare for price.
There you go for Good(+) for Bad(-). Trust me the good far exceeds the bad in this case.

Great GPS, prefer over Garmins.
by iff2mastamatt on January 1, 2010
Pros: Less reprimanding when a wrong turn is made (instead of constant scolding "recalculating" voice notorious by Garmins), large, clear screen, great UI, fast recalculation speeds, no "upgrade" notifications, WAAS enables fast GPS lock on, simple to use.
Cons: Abysmal standalone battery life, warning screen on bootup is buggy, suggested illegal turns (take left when I had to exit right for a jughandle), no traffic updates, synthisized voice mumbles street names at a lower volume when giving directions.
Summary: I have owned many Garmins, and typically, I have bought the base model every year. However, I decided to try Magellan for something different, and I'm glad I made ...
Summary: I have owned many Garmins, and typically, I have bought the base model every year. However, I decided to try Magellan for something different, and I'm glad I made the purchase. The screen is enormous, and very easy to read while driving. Though it uses the same maps as Garmins do, the 1700 shows the exit signs when approaching an exit/merge while driving on the highway. I found this as a very useful feature that is more explicit to understand rather than the GPS simply suggesting "stay in left lane". The WAAS enables faster lock-on GPS signals, and the trip options make it easy to choose between fastest, shortest, less freeway, and most freeway. Though I rarely write product reviews on Cnet, this GPS deserves one in my opinion. There aren't many bell's & whistles on this GPS,so don't expect a music player, calculator, or slideshow photo viewer. It gives directions and it gives them well, and it's the best GPS I've ever owned. However, keep note that all electronics have their idiosyncrasies and this device had one as well. I did notice once it suggested that I make an illegal turn (left) on a 4 lane highway that had a jughandle on the right. If you use a little bit of common sense, you can take the jug handle and ultimately go left, but this only happened to me once and I don't feel that it is a deal breaker for anyone- assuming that it won't happen again. I just wanted to make everyone aware that this happened, whereas I never had this happen on any of my Garmins. Also, this is my first GPS with voice pronounced street names. Unfortunately, the GPS mutters the name of the street in a lower volume but briskly pronounced tone- unlike the "turn left" directions it gives. Though I'm used to GPS' that don't give the street name, I don't view it in a derogatory manner, but rather I feel that it's better than nothing. My pro's & cons, sum up the GPS itself in general, but note that i do not use the window mount. Some reviews have complained that it takes up too much window space, whereas I stow it on the console of my car. And by no means is this a GPS for large SUVs and RVs, I have a Honda Accord and I have no problems with its size. I wanted a portable GPS with a large screen size, and if battery life is not a matter, than this is the GPS for you.

Fits nicely in any car or SUV
by dcoolidge2 on December 21, 2009
Pros: Great Large screen. Not too large what-so-ever! Makes using a 4.3 inch screen a thing of the past. Don't listen to anyone stating that this unit is to large for car use! Fits nicely in my BMW and Lexus SUV. Volume is louder than past units.
Cons: My 3rd Megallan and the best yet.

Pros: Increase in volume about all i can say.
Cons: Product has worked fine for a few months now; It decided to die 300 miles into a crosscountry trip; last 2400 miles without its help;had to cancel a few side trips I had planned. Customer Service is a JOKE;let me explain below.

I asked. No comment was given ; asked to speak to a manager; she looked over the problem; Wow she found one; they were waiting on FEDEX to pick it up. Called the next day to check again , FEDEX hasnt picked it up yet; (FEDEX doesnt pick up shipments every day?) I was told by the same manager I talked to; the previous day that she would followup on the problem. I was told by this manager that her Supervisor would follow up with me within 24-48 hours; that was yesterday and now its Friday 15:30 est . I'm beginining to think about Garmin.

Excellent if you have the dash space.
by JonCordova on December 26, 2009
Pros: - Tremendous size
- Large touch buttons
- Super loud speaker
- Starts quickly; acquire signal qucikly
- displays more street names in-mapCons: - no extra features like hands-free, voice activation, or trip computer
- Flimsy mounting
- short battery life
- slight signal lag, may a common GPS problem

For the excellent price, the only question is where to mount it. Some cars have blank dash space, and in those cases, sticky mounting squares are ideal. But it's far too big for the windshield unless you've got a massive van.3 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

A Great GPS Unit that has a large screen & easy to use
by rbenoist on September 29, 2010
Pros: Easy to read and easy to use. Finds address quickly. Easy to program addresses. This unit works very well. I do a lot of windshield time in a 2007 Ford 500 and I love the larger screen.
Cons: It doesn't show you the speed limit of the road you are driving on. Some GPS units do this and that is handy. Other than that, there is nothing that I dislike about this unit.

Size is the only good thing.
by culturedfarmboy on June 27, 2012
Pros: Size, mount I found sturdy, when set to max volume its very clear.
Cons: Map accuracy is horrendous. There must be errors in their database for posted speedlimits resulting in forcing routes to stay on highways much longer. Updates are way behind. Battery life is way to short. Timers to autoshut off are too short too.

Summary: My house is in a subdivision that has been around for 6 years. All I get are long and lat co-ord when I tell it to remember my home address. My in-laws house shows up as an address inside an amusement park (cause it has village in the name - no its not a real village.
Do not buy this. Posting an ad to sell it on Kijiji now. Hopefully someone is a fanboy of Magellan and picks it up. -
OK but had better
by wrd58 on January 9, 2011
Pros: Big Screen
Cons: plastic mount is poor quality allowing the screen to shake a lot. No CD for map updates is a big problem. I'm on dish internet. 1.3 gig downloads are out of the question. Megellan offer no other option for map upgrades. I will not buy another.
Summary: Upgrade maps is huge problem unless you have a very fast internet connection. Even then there are complaints about Megellens slow server.

Big screen, good volume
by bplatt03443 on December 29, 2010
Pros: - screen size, easy to see details without my glasses
- touch screen buttons sized for big clumsy fingers, I dont have to constantly correct
- adjustable volume, easy to hear over road noice, childrenCons: Limited on extra features, would have liked bluetooth, and real time traffic.

Summary: I like the large easy to see screen and the good audio volume, as I am turning into a geezer , my eyes and ears aren't what they used to be. This unit is easy to use. I have a mounting kit from proclipsusa.com which is much better than the supplied mount. When mounted on the dask properly the large size is nt a problem, suction cup windshield mounting takes up a lot of realestate in a small vehicle.

Not what it is cracked up to be!
by rankoon on June 17, 2010
Pros: LARGE screen is nice and bright BUT,..
Cons: maps and directions only about 95% accurate, (turn left in the middle of a bridge?) Fragile construction, battery will not keep a charge, plugged in unit powers down when needed most. Tech support for Repair/return creates a vacuum.

Summary: I have used a Magellan Maestro 4700 for a long time an love it. I bought the Roadmate 1700 for the large screen and Interstate lane recommendations rather than update the Maestro programming. I had a battery problem with the Maesto immediately after purchase. Service was right on the ball and impressive. My new Roadmate 1700 (3 wks old) will not keep a charge on the battery, vocal directions do not always match the visual, (the unit "gets lost" frequently, even on older, main roads), but what is really disheartening is the lack of service. The Website tells you to call for Service, the telephone instructions send you to the website in a "catch-22" circle. 24/7 service by website is a joke. any service by phone is a joke. Why am I not laughing? I really, really hope the military is not using these things, else we may look up to see a UAV homed in on our home in a smart bomb run. But then why worry? It would turn left or do a U-turn when it needed to go straight.
