  Just received my Roadmate 2000 yesterday and I'm very impressed with it's many features.

  Summary: This is my first GPS and you get a lot of bang for the buck. I paid $350, which is $50 off of the MSRP of $400. The touch screen is easy to use, and intuitive. Good volume, bright picture and many features that, up to now, have cost much more. It even comes with a mounting bracket and 12 car charger/power supply. Apparently the hardware come out before the instructional software. There is a basic Quick Reference book that gets you started and a notice insert that says a detailed CD will be released soon. The 2000 is the base model and the first of three models to be released. It also has an SD slot for future updates. I used it extensively today and it worked flawlessly.

  Summary: I bought this for 2006 Thanks giving on 24th in costco. I immediately openened and installed in the parking lot itself (So easy and quick to install). It took me home from there.It surprised me showing a new route too. Its quck in recalculating the map. Good satellite pick up. Know what? I am not using the supplied mounts. I put it on the dashboard right above the steering wheel. It just hides the RPM meter. But why would u need RPM in normal circumstances! Later I atteched the machine to the glass with reclosable sticker (the ones used to fasten shoes and cloths). Perfect fitting!
  One thing I might say here. It sounds a bell so accurately when a turn comes. So you wont miss a turn. Anyway u are at the freedom to purposefully miss turns! Night view too is excellent! Mail me to go4nat@gmail.com if u want to know more.

  The whole point of a GPS navigation is you must be care-free while driving. It is like some person sitting with map next to you and giving directions. Suppose he says "Take right turn on 4th st". What will you do? He is shifting some of his responsibility to you. You must look for which is 4th street.
  If it is dark and you dont have a street sign, you may again ask him if the next street is 4th street.
  
  But this GPS system shows your path on the 3D map in pink color and it gives the following alerts:
  
  Display
  
  1.Direction of next turn (left symbol or right symbol or freeway merge/exit symbol)
  2.Remaining distance to next turn from where you are
  3.Name of the current St. and name of the street which you need to proceed with
  
  Voice
  
  1."(Left/Right/Free way exit/ Free way entrance) in x mile(s)"
  2. "Proceed to take (Left/Right/Free way exit/ Free way entrance)" when u approach the turn/exit
  3. "Take (Left/Right/Free way exit/ Free way entrance) [and followed by a keep to the (right/left)]" when you are in 0.1 mile
  4. A bell sound as you reached the turn
  
  Do u still need the street name to be spelled?

  Great product for this price. nothing fancy. just basic GPA

  Summary: I got this as a black friday deal. If you just need a basic GPS without all those fancy functions as MP3, image viewer, etc, this is exactly what you should buy. It pick up signal, route and re-route very quickly. Compared to other product in the same price range (Garmin c330), it is pretty slim and portable.
  
  I've heard people talking about two cons before I bought it. #1, after a while, you have to reset the unit. It uses windows CE. once you turn off the power, it actually turns into sleep mode instead of really shutting down. If you treat a PC this way, probably you will have to re-boot the PC every several days as well. #2, sometimes, it could ask you to turn right, then make a U-turn instead of asking you to turn left at the first place. It happens to me only when I am off the main road, eg, in the parking lot of a shopping mall. So, both cons are minor issue at least for me.
  
  I use it to nevigate in mid-size city area. and it is very accurate so far. I like it

  Summary: I got mine yesterday 08/24/2007. I updated it online before i used it. Its a nice unit for the money very user freindly! The maps are so so! I dont live in a big city and some of the streets around my area where either not on the map or showed the street not comming threw just ending. Which those street have been completed 2 years ago!!! I am still deciding weather to keep it or take it back. In a urban city i guess it would work very well. But in a rural area with new subdivisions and new streets its not good! Also the points of interest. Some of the resturants that where built over a year ago for example Arby's in Nixa, Mo where not even on the POI. Like i said in a rural area its SO SO! I am if'y about it. I hope i helped someone.

  Summary: To start off with I am very familiar with GPS technology. Previously I was using a Dell Axim loaded up with Routis 2004 and Mapopolis connected to a Bluetooth GPS. That solution was stolen out of my car so it was time for a new GPS.
  This time around I just wanted a basic GPS with a decent POI database preferably based on Navteq maps.
  For those people that complain about missing addresses or nonexistent streets blame Navquest or Telenav. Only blame the Device if the manufacturer never releases map updates.
  
  After one day of use I already ran into problems.
  First the Pros: Decent windshield mount, robust design (can take a fall), easy to figure out, voice quality, GPS acquisition is pretty fast.
  
  Now the Complaints:
  Only 1.3 million POI's compared to 6 million among the competitors. Route choice seemed odd it repeatedly tried to make me take a u-turn to head back through city streets instead going to the close by Toll Highway ( I realize you can select more or less highways I choose fastest route)Once I got on the highway it kept telling me to get off the road to once again travel through city streets.
  With in 15 minutes of its first use it crashed on me luckily it rebooted and asked to continue on the route but that is not a good omen to begin with.
  Maps are uninspired and I am not a fan of the layout (personal preference).
  
  I have decided to return this after a day of use and go with the Garmin Nuvi 350 (Different price range but I am getting it for the same price as the roadmate)

  Summary: After owning two hand held Garmin GPS units that I was very happy with, I decided to buy a GPS unit for my car. And, like an idiot, I bought the Magellan Road Mate 2000 because it was on sale. Big mistake. This piece of trash has been nothing but trouble since the day I bought it. It is constantly rebooting itself. It is easily confused and will insist that you ?make a legal U turn" for no reason at all. Even on my way home and only blocks from my house, this damn thing will tell me to make a U turn. The last straw came yesterday when this hunk of junk would not pick up so much as one satellite. After less than a year, this piece of crap appears to have died. So, I just ordered a new Garmin unit via Amazon.
  
  Lesson learned ? Magellan is garbage.

  Decent, but not very logical

  Summary: I think this GPS is "OK" and I've used several. It?s certainly not great. I've used it in several areas on the east coast including the Jersey Turnpike/95 down to Washington DC. I've also used it on I-80 through Jersey and PA as well as 81, 83 and 15 in PA through MD.
  
  This unit does not recalculate well and has a hard time choosing the most logical route. For example, coming south through jersey the GPS would insist I get off on two-lane highways even when I clearly had the "shortest time" option selected. (getting off of 287 south onto 206 to merge with 95 for those of you who are interested). Also, coming north into jersey it insisted I stay on 95 and not take the turnpike (before they merge). The turnpike is a much more direct route. After I passed the 95/turnpike split, the recalculation would insist that I get off on two-lane highways and start traveling back west to get back onto 95 instead of just heading north to the merge point! After you pass the first option, it will route you to the second, and the third, until your original destination is almost completely obscured by the 20 different options it wants to give you to get back to the original highway which isn't even as direct as the one you're already on!
  
  I just don't see how getting off on side roads with stoplights and traffic falls under "shortest time" by any stretch of the imagination. Excluding streets is a pain and the GPS won't necessarily choose a more logical route based on your exclusions.
  
  This unit will not interface with XP or vista. I have both and neither can set up drivers for the unit. Neither drivers nor the user's manual are included with the unit. You can get the manual on the site. There are no drivers to be had, however, so the USB cable they provide with the unit is useless (in my experience, perhaps others have had success). I emailed the customer service people last week (because the customer service line is only open from 8-5 M-F which is terribly inconvenient). I've gotten no response. Google seems to show that this problem is experienced by many users.
  
  Magellan has a patch for their O/S and map logic, but I can't comment on it because I cannot get it on my GPS.

  Less Expensive Easy to Use Good Service

  Summary: I've used my Magellan Roadmate on a family vacation. It could not locate a majority the places we visited. These were places that have been around for some time. Even when I typed in the exact address of the hotel we were staying at it could not locate it. The unit would not even acknowlegde my home address. There is currently no possibility of updating any maps. So I'm stuck with it because I received it as a gift and do not have a receipt.
