The good: The Sony NV-U83T boasts a spacious 4.8-inch touch screen, and you can perform certain operations with the swipe of your finger. The in-car GPS also has text-to-speech functionality, integrated Bluetooth, and 3D views for complicated intersections.
The bad: Satellite acquisition time is erratic and route calculations weren't the most efficient. Planning a trip on the NV-U83T isn't as streamlined as other GPS devices we've tested.
The bottom line: The Sony NV-U83T is a seemingly attractive in-car GPS with a large display and useful navigation features, but it shows its ugly side with poor directions and subpar performance.
Great Value GPS, Large Display, touchscreen & bluetooth

Pros: Large 4.3 inch display, which is easy to see. Flexible "wall walker" mount which sticks well even on textured surfaces. Split Screen for street/map view for complex turn lanes. Purchased this from Sony Outlet Store as factory refurbished for $104!!
Cons: Navigation choices sometimes doesn't always make sense, but still does get you to your location accurately. Prompts for turns are not as early as I think they should be but still OK.

Summary: I have a pocket PC with Co-Pilot Live which has more features, but my total investment (pocket PC, Co-Pilot Live software, and GPS sleeve) was much more than the $104 I paid for the refurbished NV-U83T, which I really think is a good unit for the money and with the system and map upgrades, it navigates fast and adjusts to detours quickly. Map tracks are nice to remember your route choices for the next trip. Bluetooth feature is nice for handsfree cell phone use and flexible mounting is great. Traffic updates are free for 90 days, but I don't think I will subscribe to the ongoing service and don't feel I am loosing anything on that anyway.
Dark horse but a winner

Pros: Compared to the TOM TOM GO 720 .... Sony held its own... the split screen highlight of route direction was the big difference which I liked alot! The screen size and resolution and brightness are awesome!
Cons: sometimes confused when diverting form suggested route... not bad though...
Summary: The split display... clear voice direction ...screen size and shapeness made this a clear choice in this price bracket..... w/ v3.02 software...I look forward to more software changes... ...

The Sony download site was fairly easy to use as well....only plus is a great screen... awful route planning... awful route updating... on my last trip it gave me a short cut that added 500 miles to the over all route... NO LONG or LAT search... try a garmin or a tom tom...

Summary: Hey Everybody,
I bought the Sony U83T and have run it through its paces in my Chevy Uplander for the last two weeks. Previous to this model, I had and returned the Tom Tom 330S, Garmin 260W and Navigon 2120 max. I am please to say this is my fourth and final unit. The U83T already had the 3.00 firmware update installed right outta the box.
First thing to notice is the ultra bright 4.8" screen with anti-glare and anti-fingerprint coatings that actually work. Even when the sun is low and shining directly on the screen all mapping features are still clearly visible. Touch response is quick and speed is quite adequate compared with other units.
The route planning module is the best i've seen. Very precise and accurate and easy to program any route you want and then be able to save that route for later recall. All route calculations take less than 60 seconds. Voice prompts are clear but could be a touch louder as the speaker overloads at max volume. The surface mount is phenomenal. First mount I could stick on the dash without worry of it coming loose. The U83T easily snaps into place and easily detaches so you never have to leave it in plain sight when you leave the vehicle. Battery consumption is pretty high with a screen this large. The lithium ion battery lasts nearly 2.5 hours with a 3 hour chargeup time when connected to usb. Text is big and clear and logical placed on the screen. Connection to satellite takes 1 to 2 mins which is slightly longer than some other units I've tested. The only unit I've tried that could even touch the Sony was the Navigon. The Navigon had dead-on accuracy and a long battery life but the text was too small to see at any distance. The Garmin kept saying "saint" instead of "street" which at first I ignored then it started to get on my nerves. Finally the Tom Tom never got a fair chance because the bleeping suction cup would'nt stick to anything at all and seemd a bit toylike.
Now that Sony has finally fixed the software flaw with version 3.00 the U83T is the hands down winner!

Summary: Shame on Sony
I bought the Sony NVU83T GPS because of the larger 4.8" display and as a loyal Sony customer, because of my past experiences and love of other Sony products, but this GPS does not live up to the Sony name.
This the worst GPS I tried so far.
The battery life is very short and no AC adapter is included.
Menu arrangements are not intuitive.
I could have toast and coffee in the time it took to acquire satellite signal and another coffee before it found address. (a little exaggeration but you get the point)
Maps details limited and very basic.
Database of POI and route calculations are poor and in my area the map often showed just street lines without names. It also had me going the wrong way on one way streets and if I missed a turn it would take way too long to update. If I took a different route than the navigation system was suggesting it never bothered to update that route.I have previously owned Garmin and Megellan GPS's and they had no problem with listing street names or avoiding one way streets and had a very good listing of local POI so it's not that the info is not out there it's that Sony was not able to find it.
Voice on this unit did not work even after contacting Sony and downloading the files they suggested.
At that point I did not wish to receive a new unit and have since returned and replaced it with a Garmin nuvi760. Gota love a Garmin!
Just because it is a Sony doesn't mean it's the best.
(w V 3.0 firmare)its very nice GPS with large screen.

The slowness may be remedied with firmware version 3
by zakatacus on August 29, 2008
Pros: bright color display, large dimensions, easy disconnect from the cradle, split screen turn-by-turn and highway directions, turn by street name & relative affordable price
Cons: I wonder if the experts demo'd this unit with either the version 1 or version 2 firmware. I am using version 2 and it's not terrible, but, I have ordered version 3 firmware to see if there's a noticeable difference
Summary: I'm holding on to the unit until I get a chance to install the firmware 3 before I make a final judgement. I would like to know anyone's ...

Summary: I had this unit for 2 weeks. The test said it didn't let you put in part of a name and it would guess the rest of the information. It does now. I wanted something that would be adaptable to my motorcycle. I used it in my car while I was looking for a suitable Ram mount but I decided to go to a C550 Garmin. It has a good mount for the bike. Now that I have the Garmin (50.00 cheaper at Costco.com) I see the things I miss. The wide screen, Qwerty keyboard, Great user interface. I think I am going back to my local Costco store and buying another Sony. It has all of the features and is only $250.00.
Wow Like this!

Pros: Love the large display, awesome cradle, cool intersection split screen
Cons: I haven't really found anything wrong with mine. Did notice that it takes a bit of time to calculate a route and the GPS finding takes a bit of time, but so did my Navigon 7100
Summary: I like a lot about this machine. I had the Navigon 7100 for about 8 months before Costco saw my face with a return. So far, the 83T hasn't ...
